Reduced footprint with increased productivity

  • August 16, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Windows Server 2016 Core, a streamlined variant of the Windows Server OS, offering several benefits compared to the GUI installation. A notable advantage is its reduced attack surface: by fewer components and services, it diminishes the potential entry points for cyber threats.
What do you dislike about the product?
No GUI: Windows Server Core lacks a graphical interface, complicating tasks for GUI-oriented admins.
Learning Curve: Requires command-line expertise, a challenge for novices.
Setup Complexity is another challenge.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This inherently enhances security, making it particularly valuable for internet-facing servers. Furthermore, the leaner design contributes to reduced maintenance demands. The need for updates and patches is minimized, simplifying the patching process and decreasing downtime.

Nano Server does not include a desktop UI

Nano Server does not include a desktop UI so you'll need to administer it remotely using PowerShell or WMI. See https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/run-windows-server-2016-on-amazon-ec2/

You need to be in the an instance of the same VPC to be able to do RDP. needless to say, you need to have the RDP-HTTP port active on both the nano instance and the instance you do administration through.
instances on your VPN that is connected to the VPC through peering wont work.

Unsable - no RDP

Same experience as other person. After instantiating, cannot connect with RDP. Not a Security Group or administrator password issue, as have checked both.

  • January 19, 2017

Tried multiple instances.
Passes 2/2 status checks.
Able to retrieve the Administrator password, but unable to connect using RDP.
Tried restarts.
Nothing works...
This instance isn't usable at all.
