Microstrategy review
What do you like best about the product?
The drag and drop feature makes it very easy to customize reports. With a little bit of tweaking, you can filter attributes to make the data show what you need.
What do you dislike about the product?
The metadata layer can sometimes be sluggish.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Visualization with grid-based data allow both straight data and graphs-based learners understand the data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be sure that there is a strong knowledge behind the programming. Our current Admin has no access to the database from which all the data is pulled, nor does he understand the implications of data, or have any way to verify it. I did all the validation and continue to do so, and it is not an easy task, but if the admin had that knowledge he would be able to handle most questions.
It's been tough to implement (switching from SSAS) but is definitely feature rich.
What do you like best about the product?
Virtually every element is configurable. The SQL Engine is quite robust and efficient. The availability of a web API for total customization is invaluable.
What do you dislike about the product?
The endless configuration options are as much a detriment as a feature. There always seems to be some check-box that we forgot to check to get something as simple as sub-totaling to work correctly. Additionally, the support is abysmal and while there appears to be a vast community of users online everyone seems to be on older versions that are quite different than the current/latest version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were looking to add a platform for interactive dashboards and self service reporting. Still working on implementation so no benefits have been realized yet.
The PhotoShop of BI - customizable to a fault
What do you like best about the product?
Extremely customizable, so any problem your customers describe can be turned into a solution. There are a lot of built-in visualizations, and the plugin to ESRI and R-Server is fantastic.
What do you dislike about the product?
Extremely complicated to learn, and even harder to master the architecture. If you mistakenly architect the system incorrectly it can take forever to understand the problem and correct it. Additionally, there's no effective way of source controlling changest to the system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Giving our business analysts a drag-and-drop tool to analyze data as well as easily visualize in ways Excel can't.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
MicroStrategy is best implemented when you already have multiple employees with strong knowledge of the system, and access to consultants.
MicroStrategy is a scalable IT solution for centralized enterprise analytics
What do you like best about the product?
MSTR's underlying technology is best in class. The answer to "is [X] possible?" is always "yes". The dependency chain is unbreakable, which is really comforting from an architecture development standpoint. One of the pain points we had with Looker prior to switching to MSTR was that it didn't have a robust dependency chain (we did like using Git for version control though).
The SQL generation is also *very* readable, in contrast with many of MSTR's competitors.
The in-memory cubes are powerful - 2B row limit per CPU. We used these cubes to build some otherwise prohibitively large dynamic dashboards.

What do you dislike about the product?
UI, support, stability. Support is predicated on a vast knowledge of MSTR's intricacy's, including deep logging features which do not feel Cloud-worthy. Cloud is clearly a new philosophy for them. Professional services is hit or miss.
The "managed service" aspect of the Cloud product still relies on a deep understanding of the platform and its nuances and jargon.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Self-service access to complex data that would be otherwise inscrutable to business teams. We've found numerous asymmetrical opportunities to improve our business.
We've also productionized large chunks of our client-facing work - the dashboards help us find the fires and put them out, find the smoke where there might be more fires, and find the successes we might have otherwise missed.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
If starting from scratch, be sure to include nimble, scalable data sources such as Snowflake or BigQuery
Long Time MicroStrategy User
What do you like best about the product?
I like ease of use and ability for User Self Service
What do you dislike about the product?
Version 10 has been a nightmare. Started with Version 7.2.3 and this is the worst ever. Too many issues and does not deliver as promised.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Multiple reporting options. Ease of use for end user community
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is very easy for users to have self service capabilities. Customer service from support team has gone down over the years.
Correct but not intuitive
What do you like best about the product?
More or less the structure is easy and you dont need technical skills to make it work
What do you dislike about the product?
Documents. Dashboards and reports are really ok, but documents it is so unpractical and difficult to format
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
daily reporting
Good product
What do you like best about the product?
I am very impressed with the self service feature of MicroStrategy. In addition the ability to handle VLDB is unbeatable
What do you dislike about the product?
The GUI in Developer is not very user friendly. Apart from that MicroStrategy needs to improve the quality of the product. My team has logged atleast 5-10 issues every month on average.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are providing crucial predictive analytics using MicroStrategy in Insurance business. This has helped us keep a competitive edge in the market
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Must try especially with Large Databases, Self service and Visual Insight. Also support for D3 and Mobile
Pretty, but Frustrating at times
What do you like best about the product?
The dashboards and reports look great on both the web and mobile devices
What do you dislike about the product?
It's difficult to get technicial support for the Linux version of the MicroStrategy server. It seems that most customers use the Windows version, and I need to get escalated to second level support before I can get answers to our questions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This tool helps us to get updated dashboards and reports to our customers more quickly than in the past.
Great Product, Not as Nimble as Tableau
What do you like best about the product?
It is very east to setup / install. The mobile application is decent and works well on phones and tablets. The reports are very straight forward. Reports are very easily created, and Microstrategy is a powerful tool. From the security side, it is easy to setup as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
Migrations between Development and QA can be difficult. It can be hard to resolve conflicts between the environments. Administration can be simple but can also be difficult depending on the scale of the business. Performance can be an issue depending on the amount of data that is being produced in the report. Setting up the mobile server is straightforward, but maintaining it can be quite difficult when you have multiple web servers (making sure that changes are reflected on all servers).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dashboards is the best part of Microstrategy. The interactive component of Microstrategy makes it well worth it. As an administrator, enterprise manager was the most important thing for me. This is an area that Microstrategy does excel. The health check system that Microstrategy includes does need a lot of work.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take a look at Tableau as well. Compare both side by side.
