I think it is very good. The operating system is very stable. It is easy to use. And it's free.

Great AMI

As basic AMIs go - this one is quite good of course, and allowed our team to make terrific progress. The documentation is quite good as well.

Only one complaint - the AMI uses the 'root' account to attach the SSH public key when instance is launched. This is a security risk of course. Easy enough to fix, but for those not thinking about even basic security (you know who you are!) and there are plenty of those - this exposes their systems to undue risk.

I realize that there is no perfect solution to this issue, even if using a different account name, that account will have sudo access. At the very least, this vulnerability ought to be documented and users using this AMI should be encouraged to fix this.

I just need a GNU Linux Disto and CentOS 6.5 was very appropriate for my needs to support Java / Tomact application deployment.

The best choice for the latest Puppet

  • July 22, 2014

TL;DR: If you need the latest Puppet 3.x on your EC2, go with CentOS.

I tried very hard -- about two days of concentrated effort -- to get Puppet 3.6 to run on Amazon OS, which -- at the time of this writing -- only supports Puppet 2.7. I tried every recommendation I could find to make it work; whether forcing Ruby 1.8 onto the box, forcing Puppet 3.6 to use Ruby 1.8, and other flavors of this theme. In the end, it just wasn't possible for me to force Puppet 3.6 to run on Amazon OS.

In my web searching, I discovered that CentOS was available for EC2 instances and seemed to have good support for Puppet. Sure enough, it worked on the very first try!

Excellent - but where is an HVM version?

This fits perfectly with what I wanted in the past. However, now we're trying to use t2 instance types - which require HVM. Will you guys release HVM versions?

Thanks,

Great Distro

I am relying on this distro as a solid Glassfish bare metal foundation! The distro is rock solid and preconfigured with secure settings including network Iptables.

A must for Redhat Distro
