Best option for linux server
I always like to try different linux distributions but I end up choosing Ubuntu for two powerful reasons:
1. Updated and reliable software repository that makes easy to install almost anything
2. Serious and professional distribution over security fixes and distribution updates
Ubuntu server is ideal for instaling software controlled or configured via web interface as Wordpress, Prestashop, OpenERP - Odoo, etc without needing any desktop interface.

Need easy RDP access
It would be better to provide easy RDP access to the Ubuntu server for semi-technical users. Most application developers would prefer a UI to do coding and may not be comfortable while using Terminal for all their work. I understand its not very efficient use of the server. But for development purposes it is better to have a minimal UI that can be RDP'd.
