Makes VPN and Network Management a Breeze

  • February 14, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The user-based permissions allow you to limit specific teams to specific network subnets. And split tunneling improves performance by routing only specific traffic through the VPN. This reduces your network throughput for the VPN server. The two factor authentication integration and the individual web portal simplifies user management by allowing easy access to configurations and credentials.
What do you dislike about the product?
The licensing costs can add up quickly for larger teams.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OpenVPN AS allows us to access our virtual private cloud in a more feature rich and robust way.

It is pricey. We pay abut 9 dollars a user and that's a little high.

easy to deploy and manage

  • February 13, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
one of the few good working MFA vpn on-premise solutions
What do you dislike about the product?
you cannot buy 3 or 7 licenses and need to go for 10 users bundle, which is discouraging small customers. if you have need for 5 it is extremely unfair to pay foor 10 just because there is n other way
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
VPN with MFA

Overall easy to setup and configure. Online documentation is easy to follow and helpful support!

  • February 13, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Support was quick and direct to the point to resolve issues. Documentation is detailed. Configuration is easy to maintain.
What do you dislike about the product?
Cannot really think of any, other than pricing was very competitive until 2024, when there was a drastic increase, thus forcing us to decrease our licences compared to what we used to have, and then incrementally increasing licenses to fill our max needs versus having extras always available.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easilly allowing users to remote into the corporate network to access items not available otherwise.

OpenVPN does the job

  • February 13, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Simplicity, stability, and ease of implementation have been big for us.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is a low-feature VPN. There is not a lot of the bells and whistles you see with other enterprise VPNs
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OpenVPN is providing a low-management IT VPN solution for us on top of our standard user VPN.

Remote connectivity solution with client familiarity and OS integration for winter road access

  • December 23, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case for OpenVPN is remote connectivity for clients in the mining exploration industry, specifically for winter road and ice road access.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of OpenVPN are its ease of use, client familiarity, end-user familiarity, operating system integration, and price points. The scalability is a bonus since it allows running on any hardware. It's part of our client stack for all of our clients' VPNs and is a de facto standard for an endpoint VPN solution.

What needs improvement?

OpenVPN could improve in centralized management and enhance the GUI configuration steps. Although it's straightforward, if I don't know what I am doing, ease of use and configuration might be challenging. I would rate ease of configuration around a five or six out of ten.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have had experience with OpenVPN for several years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of OpenVPN is very good. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate it an eight.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would give OpenVPN a six out of ten for scalability, as it's usually a single user or single device.

How are customer service and support?

I have not dealt with support or customer service, however, the documentation is good, and I would rate it a seven out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have not switched from another solution as OpenVPN is part of the default stack with most of our routers.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup for OpenVPN is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

It's a one-person job for implementation, and all of our technicians can deploy it.

What was our ROI?

There is not much to mention in terms of return on investment, other than providing standard VPN connectivity.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing is excellent as the pricing is free.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We are slowly replacing it with WireGuard solutions.

What other advice do I have?

OpenVPN could improve the GUI and configuration steps. Overall, it's a straightforward deployment, however, it would be challenging for someone without technical knowledge. I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Best solution for a Self hosted VPN

  • September 01, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Especially after COVID, the scenario of work from home , using OpenVPN is such a easy thing, no unnecessary complications , you can just implement it fast, and it also integrates with your exisitng infra.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing much , while my job mostly used command prompt and its always fast enough to configure and start working.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Job requires connecting to multiple teams , sometimes at different locations while tradition VPN solutions are there, we usually create own tunnels for different projects for which openvpn will be really useful.
