Admin UI design is quite dated - I've used it a few years ago and it looks almost as I remember it.

It's pretty easy to set up initially but quite painful to manage in the long term. Permissions could be better. It's pretty easy to create your plugins and modifications if you know PHP.

For over 8 months i have been looking for an efficient, yet inexpensive way to host my forum for my weather community group. Turns out this was a hidden gem. The program is relatively easy to set up (no harder than a standard web server program like c-panel would be) and once it is set up it is extremely straight forward.
I have not found anything with this program that I could not do with a hosting service. The best part about this is that you only pay for the amount your forum needs/uses. paying $200 for a 3 year hosting service only to have them jack up the prices after you renew is ridiculous, first off you may not even use what you pay for, secondly what if your project goes wrong and you have to back out? well, you would be out $200... you may not want to pay the ridiculous mark ups for hosting providers, or maybe just test out a forum and see how it does, or you want to get the most out of your money, either way this would be a great option for you, and let me tell you as a extremely poor high school student, I was extremely happy when I bumped across this gem of a product! And hey, if it does not work for you no worries, you can easily back out of the project with little to no financial loss.
Great for New Users
So I'm new to AWS and wanted to launch a forum using this script I was set up in about 10 mins and then working on connecting my domain, SSL and more all with the help of the developers. Support is decent none over the weekend but a healthy FAQ documentation that I was able to get going and on Monday I got an answer early in the morning. If you want phpbb and AWS this is the way to go

You need to do some research to make sure your configuration is optimal, otherwise you can get overrun with spam very easily.

This is a great tool to be able to talk about different aspects of the business, everything can be categorized and subcategorized making it a great tool to find the right information when needed, and if the information is not already available you can create a post requesting an anser or help from the members.

To start with, PHPbb is free of charge - NO charges at all; not even credit card info for registration. Simply download from their website and use as you like. Customization is easy with lots of themes to choose from, and also codes can be easily modified to achieve desired customization. PHPbb comes with a strong CAPTCHA to deal with spams and it has built-in facility to warn, ban and suspend unruly members. Furthermore, with PHPbb, one can send private messages and even files, and view messages in conversational format.
What do you dislike about the product?
Very few dislikes - No search engine optimization(SEO) support, no social media integration and updates are few and way apart.

It is another avenue to engage customers and disseminate information with opportunity to immediately capture customers responses.

Considering that the software is free, the benefits offered far outweigh the downsides. For the tech savvy folks, all the downsides can easily be turned to advantages. Really, out of the box, PHPbb meets about 80% of any forum requirements.

What do you like best about the product?
phpBB is a great tool for people who looking to create forum-style discussion boards. You can use the software to do a lot of things, like assign roles (mods or admins), create roleplaying lists, enable special permissions, send newsletters to your community, and create your custom content. You do need to know some basic HTML for this, because if you're doing things like creating custom widgets (sidebars or toolbars for your homepage), you have to master the use of the [][/] characters, because they are what is going to tell the coding what to do (for example, [bold][/bold] to bold words, or [hr] for a line break). It's customizable beyond what you need, and has plenty of additional options to elevate the experience you are looking to create in your community!
What do you dislike about the product?
Using phpBB allows ads to be sneakily placed on portions of your website, and not all themes you input to your community hub will disallow ads; very few have the ability to pay for an ad-free experience, although you can definitely do it (if you use something like Forum Motion, for example. You can use credits).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm a community manager, and having Open Source technology allows me to experiment with coding. A lot of times, other businesses or clients will use another forum-hosting service, and having some phpBB experience tells you a lot about the back-end of how forums are made by companies, and then later customized.

When applying themes to your website, start with basic ones, before you go about using customization options. Also, make sure to backup your saved theme before importing a new phpBB theme; without a backup, you risk loosing any unsaved components of your forum.
