Provides good threat intelligence feeds, but the advanced models are expensive

  • June 07, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution on the perimeter. We are a government entity. We have other organizations monitoring our network. We also have our own firewall to separate the DMZ and different things on our external servers.

What is most valuable?

The solution provides good threat intelligence feeds.

What needs improvement?

The advanced models are expensive.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for five to six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool’s stability is good. I rate the stability a seven or eight out of ten. The stability could be improved.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool is very scalable. It connects to its own wireless access points. The firewall is supported by other technologies. We can add more products and extend the features and the network.

How was the initial setup?

Fortinet has a tool that migrates all the policies from the previous firewall to the new one.

What about the implementation team?

The vendor helped us with the setup. It was quick. We connected the new firewall first. Then, we exported the policies from the live firewall to the new one. On a weekend, we deployed the new firewall.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If we buy licenses for a longer duration, we get discounts.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Fortinet has better models, but we are using the one within our budget. It's a good product. Besides Fortinet, we're using Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Defender, as well as the safety features that come with these products. There are many products in the market. The monitoring team is using Palo Alto. Palo Alto is better than Fortinet, but it's more expensive.

What other advice do I have?

We use Fortinet for VPN, too. We have not faced any major issues with the tool. It has a lot of capabilities that enable us to customize tunnels and allow traffic from certain countries or regions. The vendor provides cloud-based models, but we do not use them because they are subscription-based models that are not within our budget.

The vendor has a lot of free and paid training courses. It is the best way to learn about the product. It is similar to Palo Alto. All the good companies have a lot of training materials and training courses to understand the product. The initial versions are free of cost. The certifications will help people understand the process and make administration easier. The cloud version has AI features.

Overall, I rate the product a seven or eight out of ten.

Has a good network security feature with effective threat intelligence

  • June 06, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I'm managing security rules, bandwidth for the internet, switches, and fifty access points. Everything, including the network in Afghanistan, is managed from there, and it's something critical for us.

What is most valuable?

FortiGate's ability to perform as expected and fulfil our needs has been the most compelling feature for network security. FortiGate has proven to be secure and effective in terms of threat intelligence, as it alerts us about external login attempts and suspicious scripts, contributing to our system's overall security.

What needs improvement?

FortiGate can improve its token system, as it requires a purchase before use. Additionally, the VPN system could be more efficient, especially regarding VLAN passing through, which is currently a limitation. Another suggestion for improvement would be better timezone coordination for customer support. Currently, there are issues with calls coming at inconvenient times due to timezone differences. Another area for enhancement could be the response time for support tickets, as there is a delay of at least twelve hours, even for urgent tickets, which can be frustrating.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate for the past three years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is scalable as we expand our usage of FortiGate as our company grows. We're currently using one, but we plan to use two as our network expands.

How are customer service and support?

I open a ticket and communicate with the engineers when I encounter issues. Although it may take some time, they always get back to me with a resolution. There are mainly due to these issues with time zone coordination and response time.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The setup process for FortiGate depends on the complexity of your network. For simpler setups, a user-friendly interface is easy to use. However, for more advanced configurations, it may require expertise. Integration into the ecosystem is neither too easy nor too complex.

The maintenance process is relatively easy.

What was our ROI?

Regarding return on investment, I believe FortiGate is worth the money. It has helped us stay safe, and considering what we are paying for such a system and service aligns well with our expectations and financial goals.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price of FortiGate is reasonable as I plan to buy new switches. The initial gadgets are already booted, and the pricing seems normal on the market. As for additional costs, I haven't subscribed to many extra features, so I'm only using what I need. Last year, I renewed the support for three years, which can sometimes be expensive but depends on the security benefits and how it helps us.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

A security solution with VPN and SSL supported

  • March 12, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for desk security.

How has it helped my organization?

The integration primarily occurs within the ONDAP server. We focus on integration with the log server, mainly the logs. There's integration with third-party software for log collection. Integration with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer within the FortiGate family shouldn't pose any issues.

Many protocols are not proprietary, except for H.A. It's easy to integrate.

What is most valuable?

Fortinet also supports different types of VPNs, with SSL VPN being one of the most commonly utilized options.

What needs improvement?

The solution's pricing could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate SWG for 5 years.

How are customer service and support?

You'll likely get the correct answer if you reach out to the right person or ask the right question. Sometimes, the engineer doesn't articulate their question correctly, and the answer received may not be relevant.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. It depends on the project. Complex projects are typically based on the implementation, which takes less than a week. The high-level and the low-level are correctly designed, and the stakeholders agree upon the features. FortiGate is a security and VPN device, so the implementation is pretty straightforward. The SD-WAN is pretty easy, and the routing features are solid because the firewall that we are using also acts as a router facing the Internet. You also use an IP site for that. If it's appropriately configured, the customer is pretty happy there.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The renewable is lower because the market doesn’t accept it publicly.

What other advice do I have?

It's easy to use. The interface and other reports are all user-friendly. The software is a bit expensive to renew.

The FortiGate product range is diverse and suitable for different types of enterprises. It is more geared towards meeting the needs of larger enterprises. In the financial services industry in Malaysia, it's often paired with Palo Alto. Most of the projects follow a similar pattern. It's all in one box. You can use it for switching, routing, firewall, VPN - everything you need can be integrated into the FortiGate. Essentially, it's only one device for smaller setups. FortiGate has a very good range, from small businesses to even larger ones.

Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used an open-source firewall, but we were looking for a solution that was more proactive, easier to manage, and continuously improved. FortiGate was a major competitor at the time and has since become one of the market leaders.

How was the initial setup?

Initially, there was a learning curve during the deployment. We did have the help of local vendors.

If our policies are already in place, we can have the solution up and running in less than a day using a script. However, if we need to determine our policies while implementing the solution, it can take over a month to complete.

What was our ROI?

Fortinet FortiGate mitigates an excessive amount of manpower requirements because it is easy to manage and this helps contribute to a return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price varies yearly and there could be additional costs to help manage the infrastructure.

In certain markets, if an organization subscribes to their internet service they get a Fortinet firewall included in the cost.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We evaluated some of the leading brands. At the time we found FortiGate easier to administrate and handle. The interface was intuitive and the solution was affordable.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Fortinet FortiGate nine out of ten.

Fortinet FortiGate is one of the most user-friendly security appliances I've encountered. It has a gentle learning curve, and even beginners can configure it effectively. However, for a successful deployment, it's crucial to have a well-defined network layout, documented initial requirements, and a clear configuration strategy. While physical documentation isn't mandatory, a well-organized approach is essential. This includes using clear and consistent naming conventions for commands and rules, along with detailed descriptions within the configuration itself. This makes it easy for anyone to understand the overall logic and navigate the configuration from start to finish. It's important to note that my approach to policy management might involve unique syntax. This includes how I structure policy sets and identify which ones consume the most resources. Understanding how policies interact with other aspects, like implementation and rule execution, is also crucial. Ultimately, a well-defined naming standard is the foundation for a clear and maintainable configuration.

  • January 31, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Our company's technical team handles the reselling part of the tool. I haven't heard of any problems related to the product.

My company's clients use the solution. The tool is not majorly used to monitor the network traffic or intrusion, so it is purely for protecting the network.

What needs improvement?

The tool is expensive for small businesses, making it an area where the tool can improve the product by making it available at a cheaper rate.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Fortinet FortiGate IPS. My company operates as a reseller. Sometimes, we purchase products to help our company's clients who need to renew the licenses of certain solutions.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

My company never had any complaints about the tool in terms of performance or stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

My company's clients are usually small businesses, so they don't spend too much time on security and protection, meaning they use the tool to meet their bare minimum needs.

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I think that my company has been using Fortinet FortiGate IPS for at least four to five years. My company has not been using the rest of the products in the market, so it is not possible for me to compare Fortinet FortiGate IPS with other solutions. So far, my company has been happy with Fortinet FortiGate IPS.

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was pretty easy because my company is familiar with the product.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in an hour.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The tool is a bit pricey for small businesses, but it is still bearable in terms of cost.

What other advice do I have?

Fortinet FortiGate IPS is used alone, so there is no need for any integrations.

Provides centralized management, enhanced visibility, and reduces cybersecurity risks

  • January 29, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Fortinet FortiGate as our security and routing solution.

We implemented Fortinet FortiGate to enhance our security posture by blocking and restricting access to certain websites and securing our VPN traffic.

How has it helped my organization?

Fortinet FortiGate offers enhanced visibility and segmentation for our industrial devices, a crucial process when some machines utilize systems demanding high-level security.

We have implemented Fortinet Security Fabric on our VM infrastructure, and it has provided great service in helping us meet regulations, governance, and compliance requirements. This is important to us because Fortinet Security Fabric connects to our sandbox, allowing us to scan shares across all clusters and enabling FortiGate to resolve any online issues.

Fortinet FortiGate has enhanced our organization's security by enabling secure VPN access and restricting access to social media sites, thus ensuring that employees can focus on their work. We saw the benefits of FortiGate within weeks of the deployment.

FortiGate helps reduce the risk of cyberattacks that could disrupt our production by isolating the affected traffic and creating a log for us.

It also helps to centralize the management of our network and security operations.

The centralized management allows us to access all of our firewalls and policies using a single interface.

Fortinet provides actionable data to help us make informed decisions about the actions to take. For example, if one of our firewalls goes down, the solution helps us rectify the issue by providing details on the problem and how to address it.

By consolidating the numerous individually connected batches, FortiGate helped us reduce operational expenses associated with the extra costs they incurred.

Fortinet FortiGate has helped us mature our approach to cybersecurity for protecting our industrial equipment. Their knowledge and daily webinars on email security and virus prevention have empowered us to stop attacks and maximize our efficiency.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are SD-WAN, application control, IPS control, and FortiSandbox. These features help reduce our downtime, manage the ISPs, and deploy SLAs for all the website traffic.

What needs improvement?

The graphical user interface of Fortinet's FortiGate product does not function well with text-based interfaces. This functionality should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Fortinet FortiGate for seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of Fortinet FortiGate a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While Fortinet FortiGate firewalls are scalable, upgrading to a new version or adding hardware requires purchasing a new license to migrate the old backup to the new firewall.

How are customer service and support?

While the technical support team is knowledgeable, their response time to support tickets is concerning. It typically takes them 48-72 hours to respond, which significantly disrupts my work.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

While we previously used the open-source PSS firewall, it lacked the layered security architecture offered by Fortinet FortiGate.

We migrated to Fortinet FortiGate for its superior control, in-depth scanning, and ability to minimize cybersecurity risks, features not offered by other firewall solutions.

How was the initial setup?

The initial deployment is easy. The solution can be installed by following the on-screen prompts, and the policies can be implemented through the interface dashboard.

Deploying the system takes one full business day. We begin by gathering user requirements from each department, as they have varying policies. The policies are implemented department-first, followed by branches. Finally, VPNs are generated for remote users. Two people are required for the deployment.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was completed in-house.

What was our ROI?

Since implementing Fortinet FortiGate, we have observed an increase in user productivity, which translates to a positive return on investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

While Fortinet FortiGate has a higher price point compared to Sophos XG, its user-friendly interface justifies the cost. Additionally, its fixed pricing structure eliminates concerns about surprise fees.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

After evaluating Sophos XG and finding its interface overly complex for our needs, we opted for the user-friendly interface of Fortinet FortiGate.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Fortinet FortiGate an eight out of ten.

We have one person that deals with maintaining Fortinet FortiGate.

We have 1,100 users in multiple cities and departments using FortiGate.

The Fortinet FortiGate 60F is a good choice for organizations to begin evaluating firewalls.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Simplifies the deployment of next-generation firewalls with integrated IPS and VPN capabilities

  • January 17, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

How has it helped my organization?

I work with multiple customers. Most are comfortable running IPS within their firewalls rather than deploying it. The standard deployment requires finding a service owner and training them on the platform. However, if I deploy a next-generation firewall with integrated IPS and VPN capabilities, it simplifies things. It's straightforward for someone to manage. Consolidating a VPN server, IPS, and standalone firewall into one appliance can be challenging for many customers. Fortinet's servers are increasingly popular.

What needs improvement?

Fortinet has serious vulnerabilities. Some of their interfaces are exposed to attacks. Since they are more prevalent, they may attract more attacks and have more vulnerabilities discovered.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

If I'm incorporating FortiGate IPS, FortiGate firewall, Forti VPN server, or any other component into an existing Fortinet fabric, I already have a Fortinet analyzer and FortiManager. With this integrated Fortinet ecosystem, stability issues are significantly reduced. Additionally, inserting a standalone Fortinet device is much easier and much more accessible.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support is fine and fairly responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Cisco products and operated within a Cisco ecosystem. Currently, Cisco is too expensive, but FortiGate IPS does not position itself as premium like Cisco.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup can be completed within a month with some IT security architecture by replacing IPS.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is expensive but comparable to Cisco.

What other advice do I have?

There are limitations to consider, such as the sandbox capacity. Increasing the sandbox limit is essential for better integration with the firewall IPS, facilitating traffic offloading. Since my customers deal with heavy content, we often need to upload content for analysis by the IPS and sandbox. Thus, the system effectively fulfils its intended purpose. However, we do not need to assess features beyond what the customer requires. As long as we meet their specific needs and use case, it's satisfactory.

We're building a network of partners, you know, offering competitive pricing to engage in significant projects. Firewalls are pretty standard. The ecosystem issues may revolve around business support and pricing.

You need more considerable internal resources to manage it. For clients with a robust security solutions team, architects, and skilled developers who handle data and generate similar content, I would recommend Fortinet FortiGate IPS. These individuals should be capable of upgrading their packages and downloading them. If they are comfortable with Docker, they can deploy it as an appliance on a server.

Overall, I rate the solution a six out of ten.
