Functional Tableau

  • December 21, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Show Relevant items feature on the filtering
What do you dislike about the product?
Not as customizable as I would like it to be
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monthly Administrative Report Automation. Save time and consolidate access.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider how much customization you will need. If you need high customization, Tableau may not be right. If you want standard style reporting with ease of use then Tableau is the right choice

Tableau for teachers

  • December 20, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Tableau offers free licenses to students and faculty. This makes visualizing data easy for students, as well as basic analysis. Really great for undergrad and graduate students who need to make presentations or charts for reports.
What do you dislike about the product?
Cannot export large images - are fuzzy in large poster presentations which makes it difficult for me to recommend to students. It would be nice to have a bit more control of the image size/ quality and format.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Helping students recognize the value of data visualization and the impact it has on their work.
Getting students used to utilizing data analytics and visualization software before they need to know it in the workplace.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's great for analysis and visualization as long as you do not need to export high quality images. (that need to be blown up)

Tableau 9.3 - Visualization for novices and professionals alike.

  • November 02, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Tableau allows the user to connect to a variety of data sources, including and not limited to CSV files (i.e. Excel sheets), Statistical file (i.e. R, SPSS), Access and server databases/warehouses such as Hadoop, Amazon Aurora and a Tableau Server. For my work with Tableau, virtually every kind data files can be imported and visualized using a very handy selection of built-in charts, graphics, geographical templates and mathematical models (confidence inferences for example). It's easy to drag and drop the dimensions and measures of your data files and Tableau does the hard job of visualization!
What do you dislike about the product?
Depending on your network capacity, server specifications and your local computer configuration, connecting to a server database can produce a significant delay in building your reports. I notice that Tableau tries to initially download files to cache so it would allow you to populate the measurements and dimensions into the report. However, this certainly takes a longer period of time than just working with a file locally.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I was using Tableau to analyze New York City High School graduation rates and how it corresponds to SAT (Standardized Assessment Test) scores. Tableau allows me to realize certain trends and niches through the stories and reports generated by Tableau.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Tableau offers a trial and I would take advantage of it to see if I can do more to visualize my data. It is relatively simple to learn and use due its relatively easy learning curve. The graphical user interface and drop-and-drag allows novice users to create professional-looking reports and charts without a heavy mathematical or statistical background knowledge. Even for professional data scientists, Tableau has enough advanced models and options to generate the reports that reflects what you want to show and tell.

Great for information sharing

  • October 19, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Tableau Server is a great tool for information sharing as multiple users can access published workbooks in a controlled environment. I find the dashboards to be particularly useful for visualizing data.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find it a bit difficult for reporting purposes as the dashboard containers aren't able to adjust to fit nicely on a page for printing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were looking for a way to easier see quarterly movements in multiple dimensions and this created a great framework to do so.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be aware that Tableau isn't backwards compatible. As a user publishing workbooks from Tableau Desktop to Server, this is important that the versions are in sync.

Useful BI tool for self sevice analytics

  • September 27, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
An easy reporting tool to start with for a beginner. Ability to connect many data sources and create impressive looking visualizations easily. Let's you to create compelling, interactive visualizations on your own with just drag & drop.

Plugins / addons that it supports (R integration).
Tableau provides API's that supports to automate functionalities like automatic deployment & extract.
What do you dislike about the product?
Very expensive in terms of license.
Documentation & Tutorials - It can be hard to find the documentation for specific features.
Data formatting issues.
Data model is all about queries, slow down the processing when you have a considerable amount of data loaded
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have moved most of our internal reporting solutions to tableau in no time.
Tableau helps us to resolve most of our operational reporting needs whereas MicroStrategy helps in business reporting needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need highly sophisticated, interactive, customizable visualizations and a powerful desktop analytics engine, Tableau is becoming an industry standard.

Give it a shot, more powerful than most of the analytics tool.
Ease of use needs some work though.

What do you like best about the product?
> Ease of use
> Splendid visuals
> Power to unleash creativity
> Blending different axis to create innovative visuals
> Integration with web pages and other technologies like CMS (Drupal, websphere)
What do you dislike about the product?
> Not flexible with blend/joins of data items
> Does not offer query support
> Security setup is complex and not at par with industry standards
> Does not offer good reporting capabilities
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
> I am into HR analytics and we are responsible for delivering KPIs and other business metrics related to headcount, wagebase and positions
> Tableau has been our go-to tool for all HR analytics and BI visualization requirements
> We have been able to create complex calculations for better analysis
> We have been able to import and use infographics for different kinds of analysis where normal tableau visuals proved relatively ineffective
> We have been able to provide our users self service dashboards where they can log in and filter down to the exact data they need for their analysis.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
> Please use tableau if you are not too much focused on getting data dumps
> It is recommended that users invest in a good data blending tool in order to prepare and cleanse the data before using it in tableau
> Tableau runs faster on flattened denormalized datasets
> I would also advise users to consider creating their TDE ( tableau data extracts) before using any data for the tableau sheets

What do you like best about the product?
Tableau has ability to connect to almost any available data source. And in many cases you can blend your data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Designing your dashboard and applying formatting to all pieces is challenging. If you really like to have your dashboards look great - you have to spend some time on layout and formatting. There is no easy way to use a theme or apply formatting from one dashboard to other.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using Tableau as our organization wide data reporting tool. It took us some time but with the help of Tableau we are able to adapt self serve analytics model.
