Mediocre Mapbox

  • January 23, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of access for both the users as well as customers once the project is complete.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not very maluable as software programs go. It has technical limits that were traded away for ease of use. It is not a good mix for my use.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Other than it's internal simplicity, I can gain more from different software programs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Put it through a trial period just as you should anything else.

What do you like best about the product?
Really great visual maps with plenty of customization. Really takes your website to a next level.
What do you dislike about the product?
Website can be tricky at times to use, specifically with the coding. I feel like I love the maps but am not utilizing them to their full potential. A helpful youtube tutorial would be AWESOME to see all of the possible options.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mapbox helps me while I am web designing to make data more interesting and visual. Pages which feature a mapbox maps tend to have more viewrs altogether.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Seems to be pretty one of a kind. Really unique, cool product!

Great, other than the new pricing model

  • October 13, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use, documentation and the API is very clean and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
The pricing model is made so that if your map gets any kind of traction on a blog or news website you're bound to be looking at a $500 - 1,000 bill.

Maps are charged per view. A view is 4 tiles on the screen. So most likely as soon as a user loads it and pans they've already used 2 views.

Not the easiest model to relay to clients since it's hard to estimate the amount of map views they will actually use, since one viewer could pan around a lot of the map and use 50. Someone else may not pan at all and use 1.

Other than PAYG model there is only one other, Commercial. Which is $500/month. Instantly pricing out most small agencies. There did used to be about 3 levels all with different map view quotas, which was better for scaling up your production pipeline.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating bespoke map based content pieces is really quick and easy.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Pricing model is stupid - if you contact support they just try to upsell you

MapBox - a cartographers take

  • January 25, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Mapbox is a powerful mapmaking tool for expert and new mapmakers and is intuitive and simple to use. With each update it gets better and better.

It takes the coding headache out of styling and allows quick map production and export. Its focus on design is the reason it stands out above other map-building platforms.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is very little to improve. In my experience with the product it has done everything i have wanted.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Im in the map making business and it takes the map design coding away so you can quickly make beauitful maps for web,
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I cannot praise Mapbox enough. It has broken all boundaries when it comes to making maps.
Its easy to use and continues to surprise me every day with new features and advances in its capabilities

Great platform for creating data visualizations

  • November 01, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I've used Mapbox for creating map-based data visualizations, primarily via Mapbox Studio. I like the ease of use and ease of publishing online for embedded visualizations, as well as the options for customizing the style of the maps. I'm also very impressed with how responsive the maps are for the viewer.
What do you dislike about the product?
Creating your own map layers and merging them with Mapbox data can be a little clunky and take some getting used to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Data visualization. The primary win is for a non-geo-expert like me to create professional-looking visualizations for communicating with colleagues and customers.

Excellent Mapping Tool, Limited Utility for Print

  • July 29, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Mapbox offers a relatively straightforward interface, and great map tile sets, out of the box. With a little knowledge of CSS, map styles can be edited easily. The ability to export high-resolution maps to a raster image format is essential.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is limited control over scale when exporting maps for print applications.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I used MapBox to create custom maps for a print guidebook.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great and easy for simple mapping projects, but there is a steep learning curve if you want more customization.

Great team, great product, great service

  • April 14, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The Mapbox team is top-notch. They are always ready to answer questions, provide support, and even take requests for bugfixes and new features. During our trial period, they even volunteered to create a custom map style just for our company, which looks stunning. Mapbox.js and Mapbox-gl-js are easy to learn and use, with large communities around them and a long list of examples. Finally, the Mapbox service itself is very affordable when compared with Google Maps, especially now that Google hiked up their prices.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing I dislike about Mapbox is the fact that WebGL support is still spotty on some browsers, meaning you have to engineer a fallback to Mapbox.js (the old library) if you want to have robust browser support. Since Mapbox.js and Mapbox-gl-js have totally different APIs, this means you will be writing your map code twice. Also, the geocoding accuracy isn't all the way up to Google's level yet, but for most data this won't be a problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our company could have paid hundreds of millions of dollars extra to Google after their price hikes. Instead, we are switching to Mapbox and rewriting our map code. Already, our maps look way better.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The two main issues are browser support and geocoding accuracy. Do some tests on their geocoder using a trial account, and run some analytics to see how many of your users are on IE9 and IE10. If you are pleased with those two situations, then I highly recommend Mapbox to everyone!
