Lightweight with good deduplication and compression
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution as a VM backup from local servers and remote data centers. Nakivo is installed on a NAS device at the office, and it doesn't need any external servers to run. That makes it really easy to deploy, and in case of disaster for servers, the NAS device is totally separate from them, and backups can be restored quickly to another environment where ever is enough resources to run them.
The remote data center can also be backed up to a small repository on that data center and then copied over an internet link to the office, where I have more space to store backups.
How has it helped my organization?
Backups are working smoothly with Nakivo Backup. Deduplication and compression of backup repositories save lots of disk space, and I can keep many more restore points compared to situations where deduplication is not used.
Having a couple of the latest restore points saved in the repository at a remote data center allows restoration of them quickly without the need first to transfer them over the internet from the office. It also is nice to be able to copy backups to the office, where I have plenty of more disk space to save them compared to a remote data center.
What is most valuable?
There is no need to install agents on VMs. It is easy to deploy new VMs and get them backed up instantly.
It can be fully run from a NAS device. There is no need to have separate backups servers and be able to run a full Linux environment without Windows servers.
Deduplication and compression of backup repositories are easy. It saves lots of disk space and enables you to keep many more recovery points compared to a situation where all recovery points are saved as is without deduplication.
It's a lightweight solution built over Linux. It can be run directly from NAS devices and doesn't need separate backups servers installed on the network.
What needs improvement?
We'd like to see more cooperation with Synology. It can be enhanced to get updates published faster to Synology's store.
I don't have any other complaints about Nakivo Backup, and I like it as it is. I have used many other backups solutions like Veeam, Actifio, and Acronis, and Nakivo has done things better than those other backup solution providers.
Of course, there can be some cases where others might perform better; however, for my use case, Nakivo Backup does just what is needed, and it is done properly without problems.

The stability of the solution is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of the solution is good.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not previously use a different solution.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
This product provides cost-efficient and reliable backups.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing this solution, we also evaluated Veeam, Altaro, Vembu, and Acronis.
Flexible, improves resiliency, and has excellent customer service
What is our primary use case?
We use the product to back up our entire ESXi server data center as well as our physical servers and CIFS folders across ten branches. We also use it to back up our Office 365 data.
In addition, we use Nakivo to replicate our VMs in our disaster recovery continuously, as well as to perform tests regularly for failover scenarios.
We also use it as a monitoring system for our infrastructure. If a VMServer has an outage, we get alerted by Nakivo by mail. Finally, Nakivo has helped us get a good picture of our backup strategy.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution helped us review and re-organize our backup and replication strategy. The main goal was to us become compliant with the 3-2-1-1 approach of backups and to be safe in a disaster scenario.
As a result, it improved reliability for our banking customers in terms of downtime and data safety by ensuring the backups were safe. It also modernized our infrastructure with the awesome anti-ransomware protection of backups.
We are also in a heavily regulated environment, and Nakivo is very impactful in that regard, as we can provide a solid backup strategy with security in place.
What is most valuable?
It's a great product and another weapon in our resiliency arsenal. It has saved us numerous times from power outages and server failure, and also it was a star at our BCP test for compliance purposes.
Also, It covers all of our server options (365, virtual, and physical), and also has backup targets for tape and Azure blob as well as a backup copy feature for local backup copies. It's the most important software for our 3-2-1-1 backup strategy.
Another feature is the anti-ransomware protection that works really well with the ZFS storage we have implemented.
What needs improvement?
It could improve in terms of monitoring systems more in-depth. For example, having an alert for power outages or if RAM is in critical condition. It would d be good to have a broader portfolio of integrations with other alerting options. This would be good for companies that have limited resources and want everything in a single pane of glass.
It could be a little bit faster in terms of backup and offer more reliable SQL server backups. Sometimes it wasn't as reliable.
It could support some older/legacy systems so that companies that need modernization can use Nakivo to migrate VMs. As an example, we had a legacy VMWare ESXi 4.1 server that we couldn't migrate using Nakivo.
For how long have I used the solution?
This is my fourth year now of using this solution.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is very stable and resilient.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable in terms of the backup strategy. You can have your backup on the local drive (encrypted), back up a copy to a DR, back up a copy to an external device, or back up copy on the cloud (Azure blob and Wasabi, etc). Also, it supports a tape backup.
You can deploy it on a Linux server, as an appliance, on Windows, and as a VM.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support is at an elite level. They always respond fast, and the solutions are on point. I couldn't be happier.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Veeam, and we decided to switch to Nakivo due to the easier interface and more straightforward approach.
How was the initial setup?
The setup process is very straightforward - especially the NAS appliance setup.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented the solution in-house as it is very easy to implement.
What was our ROI?
We have witnessed an ROI.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The cost is pretty low considering our infrastructure, and the licensing includes VM Servers, physical servers, and Office 365.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We evaluated keeping Veeam or going to Nakivo. We chose Nakivo.
Easy-to-use, robust and cost-effective
Our company has been using Nakivo for five years as a backup solution for a small vSphere cluster. Although newer versions have many other features, we only use them for on-premises VM backup.
Nakivo acts as a safety net for our data. Among other things, the ability to quickly recover information when needed gives us the peace of mind that comes from knowing that business continuity is in place.
Personally, I appreciate the following two aspects:
- Flash VM boot cuts downtime to minutes by starting the VM directly from the backup repository
- The backup repository folder contains all the information needed to restore data. In case of disaster recovery, just install Nakivo on any new Windows machine, add the existing repository and you have access to all backups, no further configuration is required.
The overall impression is very good. However, some aspects could be improved:
- Tape backup is somewhat rudimentary.
- Compression and data deduplication are okay, but they could be improved. For the same set of VMs, the vSphere Data Protection repository is half the size of the Nakivo repository.
Nakivo is an easy-to-use, robust and cost-effective backup solution. I highly recommend it.
Nakivo a great tool for backup

Having a tool that backups your servers is a must. And Nakivo does it well.
Already had to restore some virtual machines, and thanks to Nakivo i was able to do it easly.
Cost-efficient and reliable backups
What do you like best about the product?
I like Nakivo because it is very robust, we have never had an issues were our backups or replication has failed due Nakivo. So as long as the servers are running and are accessible Nakivo does his job.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not a lot of support for physical Linux servers, sometimes you need the support to do backup VM but with no access to the host and that option is missing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Helps us with all the DR scenarios we are implementing were we need backup and replicas of the existing servers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:

Configure VMware backup to your QNAP NAS with in minutes
What do you like best about the product?
It took me only few minutes to configure my first VMware backup to QNAP 451+ NAS, even-though I have never used or never seen the product before.
NAKIVO support is really good, they reply back to you immediately if you have any issue with the product.
It is really worth the money we have spent for NAKIVO Backup licenses since it does the job perfectly and the licenses are really cheap.
What do you dislike about the product?
At the time when I configured NAKIVO Backup for VMware 6.7 U3, it did not identified VMs on my VMware platform. So, I had to get a patch. But after a week NAKIVO team was able to release their latest permanent build with VMware 6.7 U3 support with it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Recently our Active Directory was crashed and stopped working, luckily with help of NAKIVO Backup I was able to recover the whole VM and start using the AD as it was before.
Report generation for auditing purpose is really easy. It takes me only few clicks to generate a report.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go for it, It is really cheap and does the job perfectly.
Excellent value for money
What do you like best about the product?
The direct customer support is great. Many occasions got answers after hours. Product works as advertised. We are getting very good performance out of the system, and when we faced some misconfigurations , the support team was there to help us any time. Their support system is very transparent, integrated directly into the web interface. So far our tests only included vmware esxi vm backups and a few restores to test the system. There were no glitches with it. I particularly like that only the source is licensed, so we were able to roll out several off-site data backup locations to further protect the vital parts of our infrastructure.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no problems with Nakivo so far. I have only a minor grievance, that is in our scenario, we are running a second hypervisor just for the vcsa service, and in order to back that up I need to make manual clones to the main hypervisor, because it was only licensed to the 2 processors in the main system. It would be nice if all versions would include domain integration, so the deployment would be more secure than a single user/password pair. I wouldn't mind some sort of a feature that the transponders would not have to be offline for scubbing, because in some of our datastores it takes well over a half a day.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is a quite easy-to-manage, turnkey solution for our backups. Complexity in our backup systems reduced greatly by investing in the Nakivo solution. And now that the reports come daily it is a lot safer and more efficient to keep an eye on the backups.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Add maybe support for domain integration to all services. Consider a different approach for integrity check and cleanup that doesn't completely disable the transponder (or make the backup queued so that they would execute when scrubbing is done)
Amazing backup solution
What do you like best about the product?
The ability to convert a standalone server to VM and the addition of tape and VTL support for backup was the only thing pending. Very simple and clean interface. Not many tabs to move around. Very easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing as of now. With the introduction of 9.1 version, most of the inabilities have been rectified.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Low cost, easy of use and web based management are some of the major advantages. The addition of apps for NAS like Synology and QNAP has made it much easier to backup and protect the servers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Easy, quick and no hassle backup software. Now with the support of Tape and VTL and with SQL plugin, it covers all aspects for a proper backup system.
