In general, my clients' use case for NAKIVO Backup & Replication involves small business customers who would like to build physical and logical independent backup solutions with a small budget, and of course all Synology or maybe QNAP are the most popular here in Latvia. Other vendors require generic servers and Windows licenses, but NAKIVO Backup & Replication only requires a small box and can work with limited resources.

good product, good support
Simple and UI Friendly Server Backup
One of the things I really like is how lightweight and efficient it is, it doesn’t chew up resources, and it’s quick to set up.
I use it to back up two Windows servers, and it’s been rock solid. Backups run consistently without any issues or slowdown.
The web interface is straightforward and easy to work with, and I’ve got plenty of control over how and when backups run.
Pointing the storage to my TrueNAS Scale setup has been a good move too, it connects without any hassle and gives me peace of mind knowing everything’s stored safely and easy to get to if needed.
It takes care of scheduling and retention on its own, so I’m not constantly having to keep an eye on it.
The interface is easy to use, and it’s been solid in terms of performance without any hiccups, managing storage usage and setting compression means I don't have to stress about having to increase the backup volume/store.
I’ve got it set up to back up to a NAS storage location mounted via NFS, which has worked really well.
It’s taken a lot of the manual work out of backups and given me confidence that everything’s protected and recoverable if something goes wrong.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication
Nakivo is a very complete backup experience
Backup solution delivers reliability and speed, while offering notable customer support
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Functionality-wise, NAKIVO Backup & Replication does great backups for Proxmox and VMware infrastructures that I work with on a regular basis. However, it makes working with Office 365 backups rather difficult, as it's very slow, and I have several customers who are quite disappointed with NAKIVO Backup & Replication about this.
The slowness is not about integration but due to how it's built; it's very slow and perhaps this is because it works on NAS devices or network-attached storages with their limited resources. Recently, I found out about one disadvantage of the NAKIVO agent that works on physical servers; they certified that they do not have a block tracking mechanism for physical Windows servers, so if a server is huge, say several terabytes, it cannot perform incremental backups and reads all the drives each time, which has left several of my customers suffering from this issue.
What needs improvement?
If we compare NAKIVO Backup & Replication with Veeam, it has slightly worse deduplication rates as it uses a 4 megabyte block by default, which is huge, and I have a 400-person customer for whom this product was not able to be used at all.
While it's possible to manually change the block size using expert settings, the default 4 megabyte replication block contributes to the slower deduplication rates compared to Veeam's 128-kilobyte blocks, which are much smaller and thus yield higher deduplication rates. However, NAKIVO Backup & Replication does send emails and monthly reports, including SLA coverage reports, which I find useful.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with NAKIVO Backup & Replication for six thousand days.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would rate the stability of NAKIVO Backup & Replication between seven and eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability rating is the same as stability.
How are customer service and support?
Regarding NAKIVO Backup & Replication technical support, I believe they provide better support than Veeam due to their very good reaction time, which is usually just a few hours. In most cases, NAKIVO engineers try to connect to the remote system, organize a remote session, and troubleshoot the issues. In contrast, with Veeam basic support, you will have to handle most troubleshooting steps yourself, while Veeam engineers typically just send you instructions, and their production support is very pricey.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
When comparing NAKIVO Backup & Replication to its competitors, my opinion is that for customers looking for the most affordable solutions, it would definitely be NAKIVO Backup & Replication. However, if customers are looking for immutable backups, which have been a must-have feature for the past two years, they would probably choose Veeam since it supports those options. NAKIVO Backup & Replication is building their immutable technology just to be compatible but it could be hard to compete with Veeam.
What other advice do I have?
As an integrator, I currently work with NAKIVO Backup & Replication and am not the end user, so I work with almost all backup vendors. I would rate NAKIVO Backup & Replication an eight out of ten overall, as it's a good product.
