One of the best API gateway

  • May 10, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the available support and features currently they are offering, one of the best things I like is the available plugins and the option to create your plugin so technically you are not missing anything and you have complete control to API.
The data transformation feature is also very useful and gives you the flexibility to connect/use any type of data source.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of training and industry-standard examples are missing or difficult to navigate. You can't use plugins in the free version. Tooling is missing, I think Kong should launch Kong Developer Studio or similar kind of IDE.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
API mashup is one of my use cases, where I can call multiple APIs within one API and achieve process and behaviour enrichment. Data transformation feature plugin availability is a very nice feature to achieve my goal.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Worth to try

What do you like best about the product?
I like the RESTfulness and commitment to industry best practices.
What do you dislike about the product?
The environment configuration on Windows is always a challenge but I'm not sure if that is something Kong can control
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am solving the hiring gap problem mostly. It has been tough trying to find qualified developers to build out solutions so we are relying on external tools heavily now.

King Kong Of the Gateway World

  • May 10, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The way kong manages endpoints with REST API without downtime. We can easily add new endpoints and plugin rules.
Develop plugins using custom languages in your favourite language. Mine is Javascript Kdk plugin. I developed in nodejs.
What do you dislike about the product?
Plugin testing is very difficult. And Documentation is very less info.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In the microservice world, the gateway need to place to protect microservices and to manage authentication and authorization
to be placed at the gateway itself instead of microservices. Kong handles all these things itself. Or Allow custom solution with it plugin development

Kong API review

  • May 10, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Kong's Enterprise API Gateway allowed us to deliver a high performance, scalable and low-maintenance API management platform to serve our microservice ecosystem. It also helped reducing the time-to-market of new features and applications, thanks to internal tools we created that leverage Kong's RESTful admin API used to configure routes and upstream "as a service"."
What do you dislike about the product?
Kong is very customizable but requires large developer effort to reach its full potential.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Kong API Gateway solves critical challenges in API management, security, scalability, and monitoring, benefiting organizations by providing a robust, scalable, and secure platform for managing their APIs. This leads to improved performance, better security, simplified management, and enhanced visibility into API operations, ultimately supporting the efficient delivery of services and applications. I use this in daily basis

Manage Your API Services Solemnly

  • May 06, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Kong API Gateway is helpful to manage our back-end services. I appreciate having it because it reduces cumbersome processes for us. I focus on my services in this way.
What do you dislike about the product?
I' haven't faced critical challenges with micro-services architecture. Therefore I have no idea downsides of it yet. I think current features are working very well for us.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
There are some common problems among services. They are caching requests/responses, authorization/authentication, proxy mechanisms, and so on. Kong API Gateway helps us to manage these steps in the center point.

Very Performant and feature rich API Gateway

  • May 06, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Kong API Gateway is easy to install on several platforms (k8s, VM) and is very feature-rich.
Several plugins allow me to apply policies to my APIs at a global or granular level, from securing the API, request/response validation to rate limiting to name but a few.
There is a very active community which is great to see, and most plugins if not bundled with the product have been written within the community and you can add these to your Kong install pretty easily. Observability is a key component of Kong and without much trouble, you can generate and display health and traffic level metrics. Kong integrates with all your well known third party monitoring systems e.g. prometheus. grafana and ELK (plus many more - these are just the most common ones)
What do you dislike about the product?
As mentioned before Kong API Gateway is easy to install and feature-rich, but I think one of Kong's negative aspects is its documentation. The documentation is not always very clear, often missing information and sometimes I have found the examples/tutorials don't work. Something I think they can improve on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The problem solved with any API Gateway is the management of your North-South traffic and centralized governance of the policies you wish to apply. Kong API Gateway allows you to do this via plugins, either built and managed by Kong or custom plugins written by yourself or the community. This means developers can just build their APIs and not have to worry about things like authentication, authorization or even validation as this can be managed globally across all your APIs in the gateway. These policies (plugins) can then also be built into your GitOps pipelines allowing you to automate applying these policies across your API estate.
