Experience with WSO2 APIM

  • May 24, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Initially, we had an issue while setting up WSO2 because in many places configuration files need to be changed but later in WSO2 3.0 version we have to change only
one file so it became very easy. As compared to other vendors WSO2 has many advanced features related to security.
What do you dislike about the product?
There was some confusion in configuration but then later it became stable and easy to set up.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The business had a problem statement with setting up the digital platform and enabling the platform economy. Consolidate platform for growth and wrap legacy to avoid the cost.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In the opensource API Management space WSO2 API Manager has evolved as one of the leading solutions. It’s a platform to build and manage APIs with ease. This solution is fully equipped with designing, developing, publishing, securing, monetizing and managing functionalities for APIs of different nature. It provides full API lifecycle management features covering Governance, Security, Developer portal and Analytics. It supports REST and SOAP APIs development. It supports on-prem and cloud deployment model
What do you dislike about the product?
The available documentation is very good. But finding the required article is bit tricky.
Handling API groups in publisher is not straightforward
Need improvement on Developer portal interface
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In our environment, WSO2 API Manager is being used for various telecom use cases like:

Published APIs for third party developer community. The benefit of the throttling feature is two-fold, this feature is securing the API interface from the high volume of unnecessary traffic and also functioning as key feature in the monetization of APIs.

WSO2 API Manager is providing an additional layer in front of WSO2 EI. All the requests are received at API Manager layer first and then goes down to EI layer through internal secure network

What do you like best about the product?
WSO2 API Manager (WSO2 APIM) is a complete API Lifecycle management solution suitable for small to large-size projects. Following are the key areas I like much while using the product-
1. I liked the quick setup to start with this product.
2. All product features are available as OpenSource i.e. the best open source solution for API Design & Management.
3. The user interface for the publisher & the developer portal is excellent and easy of navigating in respective menus
4. While debugging, the logging features can be enabled without a server restart, this gives zero downtime to enable/disable such configurations and save time.
5. Multitanency support is really helpful for sharing the infra among different tenants.
6. Support for flexible deployment options i.e. on-premise and cloud.
7. WSO2 APIM has support for integration with external LDAP/AD
8. Customization support in functional & UI requires minimal effort and time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Certain areas requires improvement-

1. Migration support of older versions to newer versions requires significant effort
2. The latest version has removed default analytics support and cloud-based offering has restrictions with respect to the data center. Although ELK based analytics is now released but requires a lot of effort to publish API dashboards
3. Currently, it supports a limited billing platform for API Monetization.
4. Patching/Upgrade process may result in inconsistent behavior of the existing setup.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are solving the problem of API management i.e. we had a use case where we needed to expose the business services via a secured layer with solid governance. We have deployed WSO2 API Manager and it has helped & benefited in the following ways-
1. Easy adoption; minimal effort to deploy WSO2 APIM
2. I have implemented fine-grained access control via scopes and has worked perfectly
3. WSO2 APIM has helped to secure more than 100 services with different types of cyber attacks.
4. WSO2 APIM provides centralized control on internal as well as external APIs
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are planning for any API Management & Integration solution, WSO2 is the right choice which you can try at Zero cost. So I would suggest deploying WSO2 APIM and checking out the product features and doing some proof-of-concept as well. This will give more confidence towards product adoption.

The Best API Management Product

  • May 20, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
WSO2 API Manager provides a rich set of features to manage the entire API lifecycle. Compared to other vendors, it has a rich user interface design with flexible deployment options in on-premise, hybrid, or cloud environments. I really like the CLI tool offered with WSO2 API Manager which is crucial for building CI/CD pipelines to automate the API lifecycle. With the automation, you will create API once and the rest will be fully automated with your preferred CI/CD tool.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like to see some consistency in the patching process of the WSO2 API Manager product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
API Manager is used as a central gateway to manage the APIs traffic in the organization. With the growing number of APIs and adoption of microservices architecture, it's required to have a central place to discover and manage the APIs. WSO2 API Manager provides a rich developer portal to discover the APIs. OpenAPI specification support in API Manager makes it easy to create and manage API definitions. With OAuth support, WSO2 API Manager acts as the centralized authentication and authorization layer for the internal APIs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for a flexible vendor-neutral API Management Product, then go for WSO2 API Manager. You will have the platform advantage coming from WSO2 which includes complete integration and identity management suit.

Best API Management Product

  • May 05, 2022
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The customizations that API Manager allows, help the enterprise entities to have their own implementation of a few features based on their needs, with minimal effort. Easy integration with most of the well-known providers/connectors is an additional USP for me.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the swagger definitions of the SCIM2 and other Rest APIs are not well defined. If they are taken care of, the API way of governing the product will be top-notch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I helped my organization govern and secure the APIs we have through the API manager. I have written a lot of custom mediations and created RBAC of the resources using scopes. The immediate benefit we reaped from choosing API manager is the secured access to our APIs and we have not seen any issues with the API security so far (touchwood!).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are considering WSO2 API Manager as your API Management solution, I recommend you understand the basic features of the product first, by implementing a few pilot use cases before starting your entire implementation on it so that there will not be any early setbacks.
