What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is simple to learn. Moreover, it is easy to create a sense of collaboration amounts it’s users.
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard shows it’s age. Much of the software is based on older technology and has trouble keeping up with new file formats and compressions as well as new demands for the way instructors and students collaborate.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allows collaboration among students and instructors on a web based plateform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy for students to communicate with professors and see classroom assignments and documents.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the website glitches and causes students trouble.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows professors to easily communicate with their students outside of the classroom. It also eliminates the need for paper which is easier for the professors and better for the environment.

Good site for professors, but other sites are better

  • June 17, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's a decent place to post a large amount of resources for students to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface is a bit confusing and not intuitive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it to allow professors to easily connect with students, and post resources, including tests, lecture notes, and discussion boards to students. We also use it to train new workers to support Blackboard.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Blackboard is a bit confusing to use, and its user interface could use an upload. It's also a bit pricey compared to alternatives. However, it is still a widely used learning management system.

Jack of All Trades! (Master of None)

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is capable of many different functions. It's LTI compatible, works with many other external systems we have, and it has several internal tools. Faculty can create Discussion Boards, build wikis, host meetings within BB Collaborate Ultra. Blackboard can facilitate almost any idea faculty have for lessons within their courses.
What do you dislike about the product?
What I like best about Blackboard is also what I see as it's biggest problem: its many functions. Yes, it does have discussion, but no one really wants to use it because it feels impersonal. (My university integrates YellowDig to fix this, which has a more appeal aesthetic because it feels more like most social media platforms) Since we don't really like most of the features, we end up integrating several LTI tools and Building Blocks. This proves to be costly. I know several people would like to switch to a different system, but too many people are content with Blackboard despite requiring us to buy extra tools.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're a public university, so we host almost all of our classes on Blackboard. It's nice being able to guide students to one centralize location for their courses. Additionally, my university hosts a rather large dual-degree with two international universities. Being able to leverage Blackboard's online space helps us keep enrollments up and problems down. I would say hosting our online courses is the greatest benefit of using Blackboard.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I wouldn't say that Blackboard is the worst option for LMS's. However, I would either find a different LMS or go with Blackboard Ultra. If you settle with vanilla Blackboard Learn, you may not be too happy with how your users respond to it. Therefore, you many end up adding/paying for several add-ons for the system. The add-ons work, I just wish that things like discussions, wikis, messaging, etc. were more intuitive and appealing to students. Not to be too mean, I do appreciate how easily other systems are able to work with Blackboard. We use ilos Video Platform, and we were able to link the two using Blackboards Mashups, SSO, and a new integration that allows instructors to link their quizzes from their ilos Videos into the Blackboard Grade Center. It's not the worst LMS; it's just not the best.

Straightforward

  • May 25, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that it makes it easy to take an online class because I can watch lectures posted by the professor, submit homework, take tests, etc. without having to go to a physical location. I also like the flexibility and access to schoolwork it provides for regular, in-person classes.
What do you dislike about the product?
My blackboard notifications are only sent to my school email address, which I rarely use. I wish there were a way to link those notifications to my personal email address.

Additionally, the discussion threads in the class dashboards are a little confusing. I'm never sure if I've read all that has been posted.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows me to take classes online and not miss out on the educational experience that I would get in a physical classroom. I like the flexibility, and the extra sleep!

Functional, but not exceptional.

  • May 10, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Having a learning management platform is better than not having one, for sure. Very useful in many ways.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don’t have a choice of whether or not to use Blackboard, it’s just what we use. It isn’t very intuitive, I needed to watch a series of video tutorials to understand it, and there are many processes you just need to memorize.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Great way to circulate assignments and grades to students. I also use it for a completely online course.

Blackboard Learn

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like Blackboard because it is user friendly and helps me navigate my coursework, and the corresponding elements.
What do you dislike about the product?
As part of an Institutional Effectiveness office as an intern, there was a discussion about how Blackboard did not track learning outcomes assessment well.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using Blackboard allows students to access their coursework on a familiar interface, and allows faculty and GA/TAs to grade, communicate, and set up their courses.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Blackboard is a useful way for students to track their progress and access some necessary tools to be successful in the classroom. For the professor or GA, it allows for an easy grading system that can keep track of the work of your students, and therefore you as a professor/GA, for future implementation.

Blackboard has made my courses more organized.

  • May 01, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Blackboard is organized and customizable in design.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do not really like Blackboard’s discussion feature.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows professors to easily provide students with course materials, as well as the option to submit assignments electronically, which conserves paper. Additionally, it allows students to easily keep track of course requirements and grades, while providing a means of communication between students and professors.
