Great but still not perfect

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is very customizable and has a lot of legacies. They are doing some great experiments in products tangential to the LMS experience; Specifically, ALLY, Collaborate, and Analytics. There are some really interesting features in these new products, and they seem to be designed around user experiences.
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard has a lot of legacies, and it's extremely outdated. There are 3 methods of delivery, 2 experiences, and 4 or 5 new products that aren't baked directly in. We, specifically, are self-hosted - so when they announce a new product, my first two questions are: when will it trickle down to self-hosted? what does it cost? They've started to figure out SaaS and Mobile, but don't have a unified product or experience. It would have been better to keep their SaaS and Self-Hosted products completely separate, instead of mixing and matching as they've done.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Blackboard as a Learning Management System, to manage relationships between students, classes, and instructors. It's added a lot of educational value to our University. It saves a lot of paper and helps keep an electronic record of student achievement. It's just outdated and clunky.

What do you like best about the product?
I love how user friendly this program is. I used it as a student in high school and as a teacher and it is so simple to navigate. It includes lots of great features like discussion boards, assessments, dropbox, and more. It saves me a lot of hassle as a teacher.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes a few of the features seem a little basic. It would be nice to be able to personalize just a tiny bit
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am much more time efficient and organized through blackboard

Blackboard, easy for students-- hard for some teachers

  • October 19, 2017

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard makes it so grades are visible to all students, and assignments can be submitted. Navigating blackboard for students can be easy, especially with the level of understanding this generation has for technology. The students enjoy the streamline service that blackboard provides, if a campus is fully integrated with blackboard, students have everything they need all in one place. It decreases the hassle of having multiple usernames, passwords and resources to log onto to complete an assignment.
What do you dislike about the product?
For teachers who are not accustomed to software used for learning purposes, blackboard can be confusing. Setting up the quizzes, assignments and uploading data into appropriate folders can be difficult for some.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Blackboard streamlines all teacher data and grades onto one site, instead of expecting students to use multiple different resources to complete their homework/tasks. It increases the rate of homework submission.

Blackboard as used for managing alternative courses and student activities

  • October 19, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is extremely versatile in terms of uploading documents and having a range of options in terms of quizzing/participation/interactive forums. Once acquainted with the general layout of the site, the platform is fairly user friendly. It can be used to send users notifications (on things such as upcoming assignments, new comments, or grades being posted).
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard can be a bit glitchy at times and stress students. At times, the platform can be troublesome for users who are inexperienced with online course management type software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Blackboard provided a platform for student leaders to enroll in a "course" and communicate in a common space by using the message-board feature. It was also a way for users to upload documents and forms as well as receive reminders about upcoming deadlines. This allowed for administrators to keep these forms and reminders organized as well as receive work and uploads from users without being physically handed a copy of a document or sent an emailed version.

Great for course management. Interactive tools not the best

  • October 19, 2017

What do you like best about the product?
Excellent for holding files, embedding videos, managing grading, creating simple assessments, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
Interactive tools for remote, classes is not reliable and cannot support a large number of students. Almost impossible for synchronous teaching to a group. Asynchronous video threads (such as voicethread_ are non existent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This is our company's learning management system.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You will have to look to other best in class tools to get the best experience for students. This could be pricey since Bboard itself is expensive.

Cranky interface, not compatible with Safari

  • October 19, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the collaboration feature, so TAs can access the grading center. I like the possibility to create calculated fields to calculate final grades.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not compatible with Safari. No history in grading center (if someone makes a mistake, all grades are gone). No permissions for groups of students (i.e., create groups of students and assign permissions to TAs to access only certain groups). Grades to letters templates can't be saved/restored to different courses.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Store everything related to a class into a single location.

Blackboard Learning Management System

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how you can customize each class and add different activities including blogs and wikis.
What do you dislike about the product?
Creating a test is a little cumbersome at times and exporting in from a teestbank doesn't always work.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am using Blackboard as a learning management system for my students. Its a great way for students to keep track of assignments as well as grades.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Go through the online tutorials as they are very helpful for learning how to use it.

Consider Canvas instead. They have the benefit of being web first and mobile first, and not having a fragmented experience.

Great for higher ed!

  • October 19, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's a very versatile platform, with an insane amount of flexibility and features that can be enabled at-will.
What do you dislike about the product?
The mobile platform can be a little clunky, and for a great majority of the experience I had with Blackboard, the app required a monthly fee, and had very low usage.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The Purdue system uses blackboard for all testing, distance learning courses, and various other activities based upon the needs of the college and surrounding satellite campuses.
