A personal daily planner

What do you like best about the product?
The interface makes it easy for students and teachers to interact as much or as little as they'd like online. Often when using online educational tools, we lose a lot of our conversations from the lack of personification but blackboard makes it easy for students and teachers to customize and give voice to their writing.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Blackboard interface seems a little outdated, thus making it hard for teachers to understand.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Teaching effective online courses can be a challenge with students having unlimited access to information. However, blackboard makes the experience extremely interactive so we know students are actually engaged in the content and not just breezing through.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I highly recommend taking a workshop in all that blackboard has to offer. While its full potential can be difficult to see, the benefits are astounding once fully known.

Blackboard use for university learning and document sharing

  • February 06, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is easy to use and navigate. I use blackboard for university and viewing documents provided by lecturers and tutors. Documents are organised well, easy to access and are also downloadable.
The online test feature is great as there is no need for paper or attending an exam, tests can be taken at home and sent straight away receiving an instant mark. Furthermore, assignments and coursework can be submitted through blackboard, which is a great feature as a copy of your work is always available and there is no need to physically take your work to your university to be submitted.
Blackboard also has a reminder and notification system which is great for knowing when work is due or if new documents are available to be viewed. Having lecture slides online makes learning easy and always accessible to you for whenever you need it at a later date.
What do you dislike about the product?
One of the main issues with Blackboard is that from time to time it can be slow loading new pages or opening documents, although this is occasional, I have noticed it seems to effect larger documents.
A slightly annoying feature is that sometimes when there is a new notification, it does not always disappear once the notification has been viewed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Blackboard is extremely beneficial for students, as a consumer and an undergraduate all course related materials such as powerpoint, hand outs, additional text and other documents are shared on blackboard. The items can be viewed or downloaded, making it easy to access course material anywhere. Furthermore, online tests can be held through blackboard and the submission of pieces of work, making this piece of software very integral to my university course.

Great additional to face-to-face classes

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how easy it is to upload your instructional materials including PowerPoints, PDFs, and Word documents. The announcement feature allows you to quick send a message to your entire class by selective the "send mail now" button. You can copy your shell and use it over and over again which reduces the workload if you are not making a lot of change to your course.
What do you dislike about the product?
That is does not do well with videos or in my opinion is not the best option for a class the is online.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Teaching courses at universities. It is user-friendly and students are often familiar with the platform if they have any college experience.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Allow videos to uploaded that can meet HIPPA and FERPA guidelines.

Blackboard

What do you like best about the product?
I know it well. I know the issues and the work-arounds. I know what tools actually work and what doesn't. There are a variety of tools that Blackboard offers, although they don't always work the best because they have so many to keep up with.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like they are slow to update. There are so many different versions it's hard to find guides that match the one you are on. A general Google search helps; however, it's not exact usually. The tools are more clunky. It seems outdated and looks old.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Needing an LMS to host course sites. The variety of tools.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would look into another LMS and weigh your options against the cost of this product. I would say Blackboard is one of the top three contenders right now with Canvas and D2L. I have worked with Moodle a sub-product of Blackboard and it is by far less intuitive than Blackboard. It is more cost effective. Our organization is switching to Canvas and I appreciate that LMS. I like that they are willing to change, cleaner design, and consistent cloud based services.

Bb tries to do a lot of things, which sometimes limits its flexibility

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is ubiquitous in the educational environment so a lot of vendors write their products for integration within it. I'm using the LTI with some apps and that seems fairly straightforward.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's somewhat the flip-side of being big. It does make it hard to switch to another LMS if something major arises that is not to your liking and isn't resolved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's a university-wide installation that serves a number of stakeholders. Primarily, it's the way instructors and students interface online. It allows flexibility in assignments and adding in A/V materials. Since it's cloud-based, it relieves admins of locally troubleshooting balky components.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Realize that switching to another LMS isn't that easy, so be sure this does what you want and will grow with you. As one of the largest LMS vendors, it tries to be all things to all people, which is inherent with shortcomings. Our school of medicine went with a different LMS, which isn't an indictment of Blackboard. It just means certain other products might be more closely tailored to your needs.

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard grade center calculates the grades based on the requirements that I set it up. for example, it gives you the option to drop the lowest grade from all the assignments.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't think is anything I dislike about this product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am able to synchronize blackboard with an e-book.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Blackboard is a wonderful educational toll that helps you communicate immediately with other users. You are able to make edits, design your blackboard page as you wish. I am very pleased in using blackboard on my classes.

What do you like best about the product?
I love being able to easily share and post assignments, tasks, images, and discussions in a secure environment.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the development and posting is a little bit "clunky", and tends to lag on the student/user end.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy communication between teacher, student, and peers, and I love the constant archiving that the software does. I can still access documents from my student days if necessary!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to play around with features before posting!

Blackboard Pros and Cons

  • January 12, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is great for organizing and planning a course and making sure all the files and tools your students will need are available. It is also great for a course that you teach every semester or multiple sections in one semester, as you can copy a course's materials from section to another. This is a huge time saver and really helps with continuity in a course.
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard has a fairly clunky grade center that could be a lot more user friendly. I find it frustrating that I cannot rearrange the assignments in the order I like and there are predetermined orders that you can choose from for display that are not always ideal. These predetermined orders also have to be reset every time you click on the grade center and are not permanent. Another issue with grading that presented itself is when a student submits it via the Blackboard portal, once the assignment is graded it disappears and you as an instructor cannot re-access it. The only record you have of it besides the grade is if you remembered to download the submission. I did not realize this when I first used the feature and because I needed to access those papers again at a later date, the students had to email me the file separately. Also, the inability to cut and paste with right click is infuriating.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Blackboard is a great way to share information not only for courses, but I also use it for student groups or trips as a centralized way to store and share information or discussions. It also serves as a great record on how your course may have evolved in the semester and allows you to make adjustments for the next offering without revinventing the wheel.
