Useful for managing classroooms, but functionality can get clunky

  • October 27, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard allows teach and student view, to allow the teacher to view the website and access as a student. It provides one place for messaging, grades, and assignments. It lets you create subgroups to further divide a class. It produces grade reports and statistics. Almost everything is customizable if you want it to be.
What do you dislike about the product?
In order to use some of the more advanced features it can take some searching in the menus. There is definitely a learning curve to creating and posting assignments or quizzes, as well as accessing the specific views for grades and class performance. Often, there are many features an average professor will not need to access, and it can weight down the software but just adding to menus and screens you must wade through to find what you need.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've used blackboard to run and manage undergraduate classes. It has given me an easy way to create weekly quizzes within the software and administer them to the students. In very large classes, blackboard has been helpful to keep track of students and monitor their progress in the class. I have also used blackboard as a student.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are going to use blackboard a lot, for multiple classes it is worth suffering the learning curve of where things are at and how to do them efficiently.

Blackboard Learning Management System

  • October 25, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard has many good uses. For me, I enjoy being able to submit assignments and develop quizzes that can be completed through the program. I also like how the program puts everything thing you need in one location for each class, including calendars, notes from teachers, direct access to email to teachers and other students, grades, video, audio, and specific assignments.
What do you dislike about the product?
I am sure they are working on getting the glitches out, but the system is often having do go down for updates on a regular basis. I also dislike how the system can be very sensitive at times and if you accidentally click off of an assessment or lose internet connection, you have to get the test restarted.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This program helps to put everything in one location. It also helps to eliminate the use of many sheets of paper and it helps to eliminate unnecessary meetings for one on one meetings.

Support Robust Teaching & Learning with Veteran LMS

  • October 25, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is a well-established learning management system with a long history of commitment to teaching & learning. The LMS offers a wide range of features and tools to support personalized learning and customized delivery of content, communication, and assessment.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface is starting to show its age and sometimes it take a few extra clicks (vs. drag/drop) to get things done. Data isn't always accessible without the right tools to query or license to extract. However, recent roadmap presentations reveal some promising developments
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're reducing our need to print out class materials by going green and posting documents in course shells. We're also meeting a parking problem by offering hybrid courses so classes can share physical space. Finally, we're reaching out to students who want to go to our campus, but can't because it's too far away, by offering online classes. Blackboard site is hosted, so we are benefiting from a very stable environment.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Speak often with your Customer Success Advocate, who is there to help ensure your institution benefits from all the resources, tools, and services associated with your contract and the Blackboard community at large. Take or teach a class that uses Blackboard and understand the role of the LMS in ensuring student success. Join your local Blackboard Users Group and ask questions, get feedback, and network with others in the community. Don't be afraid to open tickets or ask other Blackboard users for ideas and support.

As both a teacher and a student - Blackboard works for me

  • October 12, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
As a instructor blackboard lets me integrate a lot of different types of media through Kaltura, structure time released content ,vary assessments, and deliver individualized learning opportunities. All of these elements are crucial to my instruction. As a student, I get mobile access and notifications about grades, announcements, and course changes that help me manage my learning.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the features are wonderful, they are somewhat convoluted to properly utilize, requiring more steps than I would like, and can sometimes be "hidden" in such ways that I have to refer back to user guides because it's not a very intuitive integration. Therefore, as a student, I find many of my professors do not fully take advantage of the learning management system because they have limited knowledge.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Delivery, use, and monitoring, of educational services for students.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you explore the user guides and options, blackboard can be a powerful tool but some of it's features are less than obvious!

Great platform for course content management.

  • October 07, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
As an educator and a student pursuing an advanced degree, Blackboard is essential for long-distance course content management and discussion.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the lag in the time it takes to upload documents.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This solves the problem of a lack of collaboration platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend trying other like platforms before deciding on Blackboard, as there may be other features provided by other platforms.

I feel like they update this too much

  • August 10, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that we can chat with our students, and I enjoy that we can upload files and see how they'll look to our students.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like how often they update the interface. It feels like as soon as you learn how one interface looks and works oh woop there's the new one. And you have to start all over again.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps me teach and interact with my students. It helps me keep a classroom online.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Keep in mind, they're going to change their interface. Is it worth it to you to have to learn it all over again?

Well-equipped LMS with great functionality

  • July 26, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Even if Blackboard's LMS doesn't have the built-in features you are looking for, it offers a great flexibility in allowing you to develop or purchase from other developers the tools that you need. When Blackboard realizes that a tool is in high demand, they look to integrating it with their existing platform. Blackboard makes it easy to use these tools to provide a valuable learning experience to students who might not be able to make it to face-to-face classes, which is important for those who live in rural areas.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface is not the most user-friendly. It could be cleaner and more efficient, and easier to learn. A training/tutorial system is required to get the most out of Blackboard. Everything takes longer than it should, and can be quite frustrating for users to learn.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are currently solving the problem of having lots of students enrolled in different systems to take classes from the same University system. Blackboard has offered us a simple solution that has saved us money and made the learning process more efficient and streamlined for students.

Outdated!

  • July 26, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The whole folder in folder system directory, while most people hate it, I actually do not hate it as much, I find it easy to use but then too I would say I am a bit more proficient with computer usage than most average users so just because it works for me doesn't mean it will for every one
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not very usable at all, clunky and the User Interface is very outdated, compared to a lot of blackboard's other competitor Learning Management Systems. Blackboard Ultra is not impressive from what I have also heard, though I have yet to try it myself.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it as a student as well as an administrator for a higher-ed institution, I honestly do not see any benefits of blackboard over other LMS's but we use it because we own all the rights to our blackboard instance and it is home grown so its a bit hard to switch to another LMS
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I will recommend you look at other LMS's

Student and Professor review of Blackboard

  • July 25, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard has a very nice interface when it comes to grading and connecting pdf files. The discussion board feature is also extremely easy to use and reply to other students.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is a web-based only platform in a time when more and more students are going mobile. Blackboard does not work on iPad or iPhone or any mobile device, even when using a web browser, there are often many issues when trying to scroll down or writing more than a typical box response on Blackboards discussion or written assignments.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been using Blackboard to reach my students and help my class in a community college become more paperless.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are going to use Blackboard, make sure you survey your student population first to identify if students would feel comfortable using this type of product.

Blackboard Review

  • July 06, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I am also a graduate student on top of working for a university. So, I have experience in using BlackBoard in both capacities. I think as a student it is very user friendly and allows discussion with classmates when we aren't in class. As a professional it makes it easy to keep up on training required for work.
What do you dislike about the product?
That I have to pay for the app. I won't do that, I just log in on my browser on my phone. It would be nice for the app to be free.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It keeps us all connected and ensure we stay up to date on trainings such as Title 9.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's a great product and seems to be on par with other products in the field.
