Blackboard is outdated and needs to adapt.

What do you like best about the product?
Blackboard is very customizable, and has a lot of legacy. They are doing some great experiments in products tangential to the LMS experience; Specifically, ALLY, Collaborate, and Analytics. There are some really interesting features in these new products, and they seem to be designed around user experiences.
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard has a lot of legacy, and it's extremely outdated. There are 3 methods of delivery, 2 experiences, and 4 or 5 new products that aren't baked directly in. We, specifically, are self hosted - so when they announce a new product, my first two questions are: when will it trickle down to self hosted? what does it cost? They've started to figure out SaaS and Mobile, but don't have a unified product or experience. It would have been better to keep their SaaS and Self-Hosted products completely separate, instead of mixing and matching as they've done.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Blackboard as a Learning Management System, to manage relationships between students, classes and instructors. It's added a lot of educational value to our University. It saves a lot of paper, and helps keep an electronic record of student achievement. It's just outdated and clunky.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider Canvas instead. They have the benefit of being web first and mobile first, and not having a fragmented experience.

What do you like best about the product?
It's a very versatile platform, with an insane amount of flexibility and features that can be enabled at-will.
What do you dislike about the product?
The mobile platform can be a little clunky, and for a great majority of the experience I had with Blackboard, the app required a monthly fee, and had very low usage.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The Purdue system uses blackboard for all testing, distance learning courses, and various other activities based upon the needs of the college and surrounding satellite campuses.

What do you like best about the product?

What do you dislike about the product?
Did find some glitches when there were large lectures. Some students found some screens would freeze
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Able to use Blackboard through entire University, easy to use for all professors and students
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Set up is easy. Made to make gradin far easier

A great website to connect college students to their classes and professors

  • October 19, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love it how you can get the assignments and the submission on the same platform. You can also connect with your professors through emails and a forum like chat all in one website.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like how it shows students the information that's just relevant to just teachers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Unified platform for communicating with instructors, accessing and submitting assignments, reviewing my grades and every other need of a college student who wants to track his/her progress.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely, go for it. It's the best unifying platform to connect instructors and students.

Having the app on my phone has helped me in keeping up to date with my due dates and grades.

What do you like best about the product?
The GUI is really interactive and the quick updates are easily accessible making it easier for me to see my grades and due dates on the go without opening up my laptop.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface has some minor bugs and looks a little out dated. Also, sometimes it doesn't send me notifications if my grades have been updated.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can see my grades and due daes really fast and with 2-3 clicks on my phone.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its so good to check your grades, use it every time for looking at your class schedule and grades.

Interesting but maybe too creative

What do you like best about the product?
Prezi definitely makes presentations more interesting through animations and movement with images and text. For the audience, it's a bit of can't see what the presentation does next.
What do you dislike about the product?
Prezi is not always compatible with the computer or technology you have access to when giving a presentation. I've seen too many people struggle with their presentation because they don't have internet access or the animations are not timed correctly. And, it's nearly impossible to print a Prezi, which stinks when you need to share notes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Again, it's an interesting way to give a presentation and offers something interesting to the audience, but you can use Powerpoint to achieve similar results if you know what you are doing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use it when you know you'll have internet access and when you know that you will NOT need to print the presentation or share the presentation.

Gets the job done

What do you like best about the product?
It is a good product, works consistently, easy to use, and well known.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think they could put some dollars into R&D and consider some making the platform more modern in the look and feel.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Webinars and Online Learning. It is a platform our users like to use and most, if not all, of our facilitators have experience with the product.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend the solution. It really is a good LMS.

Not the most robust, but gets the job done

What do you like best about the product?
The user interface is fairly clean and easy to navigate. Courses are very customizable, giving instructors control over the look of their courses. Uploading files is easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the tools available work for most instructors, our more advanced instructors cannot do everything they want to in this system. This includes immediate feedback within tests (prior to submission), guided/branched lessons, and mathematical/statistical symbol editing (it's clunky).

Assignments cannot be copied independently (have to also copy the grade center).

Announcement emails cannot be scheduled (announcements can be scheduled but the email sends right away).

Tests are cumbersome to create.

The WYSIWYG text editor is still buggy sometimes, and most of my instructors aren't comfortable tweaking the HTML to fix it.

Course reports aren't always accurate, making it more difficult to track users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Blackboard to host our online, hybrid, and face-to-face course materials. Our uses range from simple file-sharing to fully interactive online courses.

Needs a reboot

  • October 11, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In all honesty, that is a tough question to answer as I have now been using both Blackboard and Canvas simultaneously and find Blackboard to be behind the times in terms of intuitive online learning.
What do you dislike about the product?
Blackboard, in my experience, was originally a tool used for traditional, in-person courses as a tool for online education. In my current position, it has been transitioned and is attempting to be used for 100% online courses. Which it doesn't seem like that was the intention of the product. So it has been developed and adapted for this intention but it falls short.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I run online education programs for a law school. My programs are asynchronous but also require a cohort - so Blackboard does not provide very useful platforms to accomplish both objectives.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Determine your reason for using it, so you know if it will fit your needs.

Blackboard is one of the best LMS

What do you like best about the product?
Great LMS and most experienced in the market with ability to use their API to customize looks
What do you dislike about the product?
Design too primitive and should have a good look and feel option out of the box.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Lets our company use their API to build a cool looking UI around the look and feel of our institution site.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
They have an API which allows you to use their features with your own UI design.
