User of Blackboard and comparing against other software

  • July 30, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Simple platform that was very familiar. Easy to "translate" because it's like a classroom blackboard.
What do you dislike about the product?
Limited in some features (if you have a more tech familiar instructor, there's not much that blackboard does that they can't already).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Document management, ease of use, no need to retrain (usually).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Covers the basics, though for larger settings, other software may be required or better to meet needs.

Handles everything virtual in one easy platform

  • July 28, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It wasn't until I didn't have blackboard that I realized how amazing this platform really is. At my study abroad university they had several outdated platforms with different login credentials for various tasks. It was almost ridiculous how badly they functioned and how confusing it was. Blackboard makes it easy to share documents, hold discussions, take virtual tests/quizzes, and communicate with your professors. You can easily manage your classwork through this singular platform. Everything you'd ever need to do virtually was incorporated into blackboard's platform. I think all colleges should use Blackboard.
What do you dislike about the product?
Like many programs, blackboard could update their interface. I am picky about design, though.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy way to communicate with classmates and professors in a "classroom setting" when you're not in class -- ie discussion boards. one simple easy to use platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't waste time with cheaper software -- get blackboard.

Blackboard Learn - Stable, but for how long?

  • July 28, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We have been using Blackboard Learn 9.1 for so long that it's like a familiar friend. Updates fix bugs and may roll out small updates, but there are no major changes. It does what it is supposed to do (for the most part).
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't see Blackboard's Classic Learn environment competing with the newer learning management systems indefinitely. It's stuck in the past, and some features have needed a revamp for so long. The discussion board and grade book could use updating. A usable mobile instructor app is still not available.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Blackboard for every single one of our college courses. It helps deliver basic information such as syllabi and instructor information to all students.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I'd wait to see how Blackboard Ultra pans out. There is a movement to go to Canvas or Brightspace, but Canvas is still missing items, and may not be as accessible as Blackboard or other products that have been in the marketplace longer.

Blackboard useful tool for instructors

  • July 25, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Blackboard shelves can be created easily and with very little design skills. I use Blackboard to deliver information and documents to students through this platform. I am able to upload documents, as well as pictures and flyers in a range of file types.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have always had an issue creating new folders in the "Files" section. For example, when I tried to upload a poster for an event once, I couldn't open the actual file to place it within the corresponding folder. I still have been unable to find out if it has to do with my browser, my computer, or the actual Blackboard.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am solving content delivery to students/clients. In my case, I deliver learning resources that include a variety of files, images, and videos to assist with writing development. Students are able to access these documents independently on their end, which helps free up the writing consultants' time to help more dependent students.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Blackboard is an excellent tool for universities to provide for both educators and students. It facilitates the delivery of learning materials in various modes, such as videos, images, and documents. It allows students to work independently on many learning activities.

Great interface...when it works.

  • July 23, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The user interface is great. It's easy to work with, very user friendly, and has a number of tools that make it easier for the student to communicate with the instructor or vice versa. Being able to directly submit documents or assignments on the site makes it easy for instructors to keep track of assignments and easy for students to upload them all to one central location.
What do you dislike about the product?
From my experience there seems to be a lot of bugs within the system. Instructors would swear up and down 'x-assignment' was posted, yet it never appeared in the dashboard or anywhere on the class. This caused problems, as sometimes only one or a handful of students would experience this. This made it difficult for the instructor to discern between who was being truthful and who wasn't.

Secondly, my biggest complaint would be glitches in the exam/quiz taking feature of Blackboard. While it worked more often then not, there were instances where I was not able to complete an exam or quiz and receive a 0 on the assignment. There were times it would simply boot me from the exam or quiz with no explanation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The problem solved is it provides a central location for students and instructors to communicate. This makes it easy for instructors with multiple classes and hundreds of students as well as students with multiple classes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's not bad, but I feel it's far from the best. Instructors should be willing to be flexible when bugs are present.

Customize-able with a lot of great student features

  • July 11, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that Blackboard provides an easy way to interact with students. The messaging feature is helpful, and I can post various media in order to engage students in different ways.
What do you dislike about the product?
The editing features can be a bit "clunky" and non-intuitive at times. I found it very helpful to have someone in our IT department give me one-on-one training in order to determine the best way to utilize this for my students.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I used Blackboard to communicate with students on probation and to provide resources in many different categories of student success. Students were able to use this as a one-stop-shop to get handouts, app/website recommendations, etc. to address issues of time management, study skills, self-care, etc.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There is a lot of functionality with Blackboard, but do your research and go through trainings in order to use it to the full extent. A poorly constructed Blackboard site can be very frustrating for students.

Blackboard-- the cornerstone of my work

  • July 06, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Blackboard allows for online learning from near or far. I work for a distance education office in the US and we have students from all over the world enrolled in our courses.
What do you dislike about the product?
It seems a little old school at times. Could be more modernized, maybe trying some different buttons to liven it up?
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Blackboard to allow students to earn a Masters or PhD while not having to be in the traditional classroom. Our students range from international students to military to stay at home parents and even business executives.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are a university that is looking to take courses online, Blackboard is 100% your best option. I used it when I was in college and now the University that I work for uses it.

Simple Enough

  • June 30, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use for anyone. I have used blackboard since my freshmen year at college and it has been very simple to use. I like the access to different categories, and how organized the tool bar is. I have been using it for a long time and they definitely have developed the software.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some tools are not so useful, and Maintenance time sometime interfere during submissions. The system sometimes is sensitive to clicks.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy access to all the assignments, grades and home work. We are able to go back to get papers anytime. All time access is amazing!

my blackboard review

  • June 19, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to access all my courses in one place. I do like the layout in some ways and I like notifications I receive.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike how hidden some features can be, and how far I have to search for some topics. It may just be because I have so much from different courses.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The benefit provided by Blackboard is an online learning community where people from all over can communicate and take part in classes that may be in different states or cities.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Set time aside to get used to it, give yourself a buffer period so you don't miss anything. Explore the website so you get a feel for it

Useful but difficult to get used to

  • June 04, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Once you get familiar with it, there are some nice functionalities, like being able to set up tests that can be automatically graded. I also like the ability of setting up availability dates for assignments/files, and the automatic stamping of late submissions when you set up a due date. These help with the tasks of keeping up with what goes on in the class.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do not like the learning curve associated with Blackboard, and the messy layout. Finding functionalities take a long time, and the time and effort necessary for mastering the tools is quite overwhelming. One specific thing I do not like is linked with the great functionality of grading on the website itself, which is a nice thing to have, but we cannot do it in a way that releases all grades at the same time. One by one, as you grade, the grades are revealed to students. So, if you spend a few days on grading assignments, students can start saying that others' have learned their grades and start wondering when theirs' is going to be graded. I wish there was a way to hold off on releasing the grades until the instructor is ready to do so.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Blackboard for my classes. One of the good things is that it is able to host different types of files to share with students, and also allows discussion to be held on the site among the users.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be aware of the time investment necessary to get used to using the system with its full capacity. The functionalities are really great, however getting to them (navigation), and then using them with the exact intentions you have can be a bit tricky. Therefore, going in to use the product for the first time should be done quite in advance of classes' start dates to allow enough opportunities to work on building classes on the system.
