Backup Exec by Veritas - Reliable business backup

  • October 04, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Backup Exec is established and reliable. It can backup servers, NAS devices, VMWare, Hyper-V and a host of other data types. These include SQL databases, Echange servers and much more. Adding a device to the list of devices that can be backed up is pretty much straigh forward, as is a device to backup data to. And now, with cloud backup, data can immediately be backed up off site as often as you like.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface can be slow at times. It used to be much easier to create smaller backup jobs that you put together in larger ones but this functionality was strangely remvoed in later versions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Data is backed up and can be secured off site with eithet tapes, removed hard disks now in the cloud.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Test backup and restore operations from as many different types of media as you can.

Backup Exec review

  • September 26, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Good way to use as a secondary backup medium, easy to store tapes offsite
What do you dislike about the product?
Tape reliability, other systems are more secure, reliable than tape
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use backup exec as a secondary method of backing up crucial data in case primary is unavailable in a disaster situation

Good functionality, with good interface in recent versions

  • September 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of checking for running jobs, and also job histories, to see times for backups and restores.
What do you dislike about the product?
For older versions, it was difficult to quickly see a list of server being backed-up.
Sometimes at least with older versions, you need to restart Backup exec, to verify you have suspended or unsuspended the job queue correctly, for example when the server needs to be patched.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It solves the need for a backup solution for Windows and Linux servers.
Benefits: Reliable backups when prerequisites are met, and good feedback on different statuses for backups themselves.

Backup Exec for Physical Servers

  • September 05, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Generally runs well and when I have issues they are easy to resolve. Restoring data is easy enough, but reading the documentation is necessary. I've found that the tape backups are more challenging to restore from vs hard drive media..
What do you dislike about the product?
Quirky, stops working at times, have to monitor more than I would like. Interface is less than intuitive. At times we have issues with settings not working but a restart of services usually fixes the issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this for data backups of physical servers, data size is easy to maintain, not a lot of bloat.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Know what it is , the version I use is meant for data backup only.

Middle of the pack

  • August 15, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is familiar, except one version (I think 12.x), the rest is user friendly and intuitive enough. Works with all possible backup targets including cloud and offsite storage, new backup devices are easy to configure, notifications are stable.
What do you dislike about the product?
The product itself is not super stable and job failures are common. Requires supervision, unlike Dell products and Acronis
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Backinh up servers on several networks
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have a good budget, I would strongly suggest Dell Appasure

Amazing Backup Software for an affordable price!

  • August 09, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This is by far the best backup software for the price and for a wide range of business needs. I personally have used Backup Exec since 1992 until 2017 and all versions have been progressively improved.

The GUI now makes it very easy to use and intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
Besides very minor problems occasionally and some intervention is needed it is still quite automated.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
All backup needs are meet for a small to moderately large corporate organization without getting too expensive.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Best general solution for all round backup.

Only for small data set

  • August 08, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Backup guides you for a complete back up
What do you dislike about the product?
Cannot backup large TB. Takes too long.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We need data to be backed up. Veritas makes it easy with Wizard to backup and restore. Their support is awesome.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have small data set, use Veritas. Make sure your backup schedule will work with Veritas.

Backup Exec is a very efficient software backup system

  • August 08, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is extremely customizable and powerful. Allows numerous media types to write to as well as ability to customize jobs including unique schedules, selection lists, and exceptions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Software often has little bugs that make it a pain to administer. Oftentimes, it needs tweaking to jobs, settings, and server settings. It does not overwrite older backups as it should despite setting retention settings. This can sometimes require manually logging into the server in question and clearing out older data to make room for new jobs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
If configured correctly, the software does a great job of backing up essential data and systems including complicated SQL and Exchange software. Also, it backs up virtual machines as a whole to provide quicker restoration in a crisis situation. This has been used and tested across many clients and works very well.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great and affordable software, but needs designed properly around media storage to account for proper retention.

Just okay

  • August 08, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Used it for several years and found it just okay. Found it combursom at times.
What do you dislike about the product?
I FOUND IT OFTEN CONFUSING TO REVIEW BACKUP INFORMATION. THE SCREENS WERE DATED AND REQUIRED TO MANY CLICKS TO DRILL DOWN TO THE INFORMATION I REQUIRED.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
DAILY BACKUPS OF COMPANY DATA.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
TRY IT. IT COULD WORK FOR YOU.

Been a gold standard for many users but still cumbersome and resource intensive.

What do you like best about the product?
For non-profit clients is super cheap through vendors. Unfortunately I don't have much else positive.
What do you dislike about the product?
In short... everything! Heavy resource requirements. Cloud based backup support is lacking. Constantly crashing and dropping clients when a backup is missed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
They almost give it away to non-profits which affords them some type of backup plan.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There are better solutions out there that give a better sense of security.
