Joomla tries to make websites quick and easy.
What do you like best about the product?
Makes managing websites easier than manually coding them.
Allows clients without technical knowhow to do minor changes to text and images. (Although they do struggle).
Lots of nice themes.
Secure(ish)

What do you dislike about the product?
Our site is now filled with 3rd party modules to make it look and feel how we want it to. This now means that staff without technical knowhow struggle to update it themselves.
It is know where near as user friendly as the alternatives.
Security is generally okay however there have been exploits in the past and I wouldn't be surprised if there is more to come.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We tried to use joomla to remove the need for a 3rd party web developer and do manage the site ourselves. This is not an issue for the staff in the IT department however we don't necessarily have time to make the changes that should be simple enough that anyone can do it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Joomla is a useful tool but don't expect it to be as straight forward to manage as advertised.

Built a couple of websites using Joomla
What do you like best about the product?
The best thing in Joomla! is its community. Whenever I had any issue, if any, I was able to find either an extension that met my requirements or someone who could help me with his/her experience with Joomla.
The other thing I really liked is that Joomla comes with a lot of things installed with default installer. I don't have to think about adding new plugins/extensions to build a simple company website, like in Wordpress.

What do you dislike about the product?
The thing I dislike is the Joomla Framework. Sometimes it's difficult to build solutions on top of it. The code architecture could have been built a bit better. Sometimes, to get obvious data you have to make a lot of code, while it could have been done in a simpler manner.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Joomla helps me building websites faster than any other CMSes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you want to build your website easily and quickly then Joomla is good choice. It's easy enough that every not-so-experienced webmaster can use it.
I have built a couple of sports websites on this solution and it always gives me what I need to setup the environment. But you have to keep in mind that Joomla! has a couple of very good sports management extensions that can be found in the Joomla extensions directory.
Creating templates in Joomla is pretty straightforward. Of course, for some people Wordpress might be simpler, but Joomla gives more power on building custom templates and styling and rebuilding templates and components from 3rd party developers.
