What do you like best about the product?
I enjoyed the range of functionality with this platform
What do you dislike about the product?
The user experience could use some improvements- while a lot can be done, it is not always easy to figure out where the right tools are or how to make the most of the platform. Can be complicated in the back end.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Hosting an interactive website to attract customers and prospective leads

Joomla the CMS that would make your life easier!

What do you like best about the product?
Joomla is a very flexible tool for not technica users and experts web designers. Once you get the hang of how the different features, modules, compponents, plugins, and content are structured, it becomes very easy to maintain an active website with lots of updates. Also it is possible to find a lot of components, and modules for free, you can integrate another applications, create your own code, it is easy to setup, and very fast to generate a change in a website, just in seconds, but the best is that is free.
What do you dislike about the product?
Maybe updates because always I have to make my backup just in case that my upgrade can generate some errors, if I want to create a ecommerce store, I cannot integrate the code from the banks, It only allows paypal and this kind of payments methods, but If I want to integrate the banks code it is not possible, also I hate the problems with permissions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been able to create a webpage in 15 days which was very fast for my client and he was surprise with the results. Also it is very fast to make changes in my websites which is great because everyday i can change the look of my website and publish blog articles in matter of seconds.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Joomla is a good tool if you want to have a website fast, to a low cost, and with a professional look.

One of the most complete, yet easy-to-use CMS

What do you like best about the product?
Joomla is a very flexible solution, allowing you to build a solid web site without having technical knowledge. Using templates is easy and you will also find plenty of plugins and extensions, allowing you to build a customized system.
What do you dislike about the product?
Joomla can be a little difficult to use at the beginning. It is also very dependent on the template you use. The more extensions you use, the more problems you will have in the long run, especially after updates, so my suggestion is to be careful with extensions and only use the ones that are really necessary to your business. Compared to WordPress, Joomla is not especially SEO-friendly. I'm not an expert in that field, but I suggest you speak to your SEO team before deciding to go with Joomla.
Another weak point, from a localization point of view, is that the visible front-end texts are scattered among many sections (you can have texts in the menu section, as modules, inside components, as articles, etc.), so controlling all this (when you need to translate them) can be daunting.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We wanted to quickly launch a web site without a deep knowledge of PHP and Javascript and Joomla allowed us to do that. We installed Joomla in just a few seconds on a shared hosting space, bought a template, customized it and we were ready to go in really no time. Of course, you need to have a clear definition of your web project before you start using Joomla, otherwise you will lose lots of time finding your way through the menus...
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Being open-source, you should consider the pros and cons of that: there is a huge community, but it is not always easy to find the professional you need.

A more grown up alternative to Wordpress

What do you like best about the product?
You have far more flexibility in page control than wordpress allows and once you've learned the different naming protocol for components, plugins etc it's a doddle. Also more secure than wordpress.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although there is a massive library of add-on components available it's not as large as Wordpress.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are starting to build more multilingual sites and joomla can do this without breaking a sweat.

Great, straightforward CMS that allows easy allocation of management of various pages

What do you like best about the product?
I love the ability to assign users different levels/areas of access so that they can keep pages updated themselves and I'm not constantly updating something when someone emails me. This is an especially nice feature the bigger the pool of people who need to edit the page gets.
What do you dislike about the product?
Interface looks a little old-fashioned and can be a bit finicky, which is intimidating to less experienced users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this to manage the pages for the English Department at a big university, so we have total access but each program or individual represented can, if they wish, have control over their own page.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It might be nice to, as we've done, give users a little document with a crash course in basic HTML stuff and addressing some of the quirkier features of Joomla. This can greatly reduce the amount of support requests you get.

Effective, but not user-friendly

  • December 26, 2017

What do you like best about the product?
Joomla can really do anything you want. If you have someone who can code and customize a website from soup to nuts, Joomla can host it with almost infinite possibilities. Its also an open-source CMS which means you can switch coders or hosts at any time - as long as they know their way around Joomla, they can get around your site.
What do you dislike about the product?
Even once customized to your particular website, the backend of Joomla is not at all intuitive or user-friendly. You absolutely have to be specifically trained to navigate it in order to update or add content. If you do not have a web team on staff, you can quickly get in over your head. I'm a PR manager and so my background is not in the tech side of websites - just the content management. I can use most of the basic features of Joomla and I can keep our website more or less up-to-date, but I cannot make any design changes or extensive updates without outsourcing to a web developer.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Joomla was an excellent fix for our organization because it got our website off of a proprietary CMS system and onto an open source one, meaning that it was much easier for us to hire outside contractors to work on it and maintain the site. It also has limitless features - we needed a responsive calendar integrated as well as some other custom coding and our developer was able to put in everything that we needed.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would only choose Joomla if you have an in-house development team and need a very customized, high-end website. If you have more basic needs or do not have web developers on staff, go with something like WordPress or SquareSpace.

Clunky and outdated platform

  • December 21, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The basics of Joomla editing are pretty easy, even for someone without much HTML or programming experience.
What do you dislike about the product?
The platform really just needs too many add-ons to make the website do what you want it to do. It then becomes clunky and overly-complicated for small teams to manage.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We used Joomla for 8 years for our company website. A 3-man Marketing team was able to manage and update the website without much IT help.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for a deep platform with many templates and add-ons, Joomla will work!

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
With Joomla I like that I can make my own blog in a company without any effort because I don't know to much code so I think that this is the right tool for me. It can be used in a lot of platforms like cell phone or desktop, notebook. Has a lot of functions like: widgets, news feeds, banners. Has an clear back-end and front-end part.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's a bit hard to install it. You need an access to a ftp server. The documentation is not so clear. It can be improved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
At the moment I am using Joomla for a website for my department as an intranet page . It's low cost and easy to use. Simple support, quick improvement, fits to all needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try to use it, it's very easy and you can find a lot of templates on the internet.
