A strong router and firewall OS with strong documentation

  • June 28, 2021

What do you like best?
VyOS is a strong router and firewall that is easy to configure and has strong documentation. Since the product has a significant userbase, many of the common problems and pitfalls have strong documented solutions. It is also a robust and reliable solution, not requiring significant maintenance. The lack of maintenance is a huge benefit.
What do you dislike?
VyOS doesn't seem as efficient as other offerings in the field, both open source and closed source, such as pfSense. The inefficiently causes larger instances to be required for supporting a significant amount of traffic. While maintenance is infrequently needed, when it is, the upgrade process can be difficult and convoluted. Sometimes, upgrades can require significant configuration changes to maintain performance.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
VyOS helps create a routing endpoint that is easy to configure and upgrade.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Look at other competitors in the space, such as pfSense. Especially for larger deployments, systems with higher throughput may make more sense.

An excellent support team and great product, we are using it for VPN connections for our company and it works great.

    Cloud Formation

Non Cloud

The product is not compatible with AWS standard procedure; Cloud Init, User Data, Cloud Formation. Usable only for manual configuration, which is contradicting the reason why people are in AWS (automation). No clear documentation to make it work, like people have time to guess and troubleshoot your product?!? I use the paid version. Now will abandon this product.

Excellent appliance at fair price

We have been using VyOS for standard and dynamic (routed) VPNs, GRE tunneling, NAT, Firewall and it delivers everything with rock-solid stability. The CLI is very intuitive and easy to understand even if you have never used VyOS before (of course some networking background would be required). The price/performance ratio is perfect fit for hybrid dispersed environments, making the "journey to the cloud" more affordable and easier.

A highly reliable and reasonably priced router/VPN/firewall Network Operating System

We've been using VyOS in production on our networks for about five years now, and it's provided rock-solid service. We moved to Sentrium for professional support, which we haven't had to use much - but when we did, the response times and quality of assistance were top tier, making it absolutely worth the price.

Highly recommended.

Solid appliance for terminating IPsec in the cloud

My organization uses VyOS appliances to implement a security services VPC for other VPCs in our infrastructure. We've been very pleased with the stability and performance. If you are looking to "roll your own" NAT instance, you may want to consider using VyOS. One major caveat to deployment is a complete lack of documentation for VyOS's cloud-init implementation, which was re-written for 1.2. This a big pain point for us as our infrastructure is codified in terraform. Overall, I would encourage companies with complex VPC networking requirements to evaluate this product.

All core functionality in place

  • February 10, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best?
Simplicity of initial setup, ease of configuration, core functionality implemented quite well.
What do you dislike?
Logging needs some more work on, no LTS version, only old-stable release.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Lightweight cost-effective routing and VPN solution.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Core functions can be run quick and easy, some issues need workarounds, no problem if you've enough background and experience.
