IBM DB2- robust and unbeatable for large application

  • June 02, 2020
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It allows for very fast querying when volume of data is large.
Easy to use, simple SQL commands.
Other built in features and uitilies that enable tweaking the database
Built for and good performance for Data Science and AI
Storage optimization
What do you dislike about the product?
A Bit archaic, usually run on Mochasoft.
Although IDEs with better interfaces are available they can be very expensive, so most mainframe projects use old Terminals which require knowledge of mainframe technologies which isn't efficient.
Example, using F7 and F8 just to scroll up and down significantly decreases efficiency.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I work on a large scale mainframe application where data received daily is in millions. Certainly allows for extremely fast and secure processing of sensitive data such as call details for a multination telecommunication provider.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use only if the volume of data is huge, otherwise stick to others as learning and using mainframe technology can be challenging.

DB2 works so well with Tableau and other BI apps.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Working with almost all kinds of DB technologies available right now, I have been so amazed with the speed of processing of records on db2. Being a Tableau expert, fetching data on the go at a reliable speed has been one of the critical requirement and I feel safe to say DB2 has been good with it not just in Live but in Creating Huge Extracts too.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing as such. It is already doing a good job. DB2 can even reach much greater heights in terms of Data Processing ( already is) with more frequent update rollouts.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using DB2 to host huge financial data and create Tableau reports and dashboards out of it for data analysis. The performance have been very good with DB2 and also the interoperability across different environments ( Dev,Prod,Qa)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a good tool for Storing and Warehousing.

DB2 is excellent for performance

  • May 06, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have used almost all major relational database technologies throughout my career. Among them, DB2 is the fastest and most reliable database according to my experience. DB2 is unique for its compression technology for storage savings and performance acceleration specially working with analytical workloads. In one of the multinational companies I worked, we used DB2 as the main database on IBM AIX servers for our ERP and DB2 Blu for our Data-warehouse. Having previous experience with all other major database technologies, it sometimes amazed me with its speed of processing records.
What do you dislike about the product?
DB2 is not user-friendly as some of other major databases. Mainly since we used DB2 on AIX environment which is Unix command line-based, having long term previous experience working on windows-based environment to manage the database instances I find it difficult in the first place. We had to depend on writing, scheduling scripts on the operating system features. For analytical purposes we used windows environment which is better. But in my opinion compared to other leading vendors DB2 lacks overall user-friendliness. I assume their main focus on improving performance could have hindered the better graphical user interface.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Having previous experience with all other major database technologies, it sometimes amazed me with its speed of processing records. Specially its capability to handle terabytes of data faster than we expected. That helped us to speed up both overall development time and performance in production environments.

A Great All Purpose Relational/SQL DBMS

  • February 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Db2 is easy to use and has just about every feature you can imagine in a relational database management system. You can use it on the mainframe, as well as on Linux, Unix, and Windows systems, and even the iSeries platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not much to dislike. Perhaps IBM could do a better job of marketing it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using Db2 to organize and report on all types of business data. The temporal support is great for complex business data that changes over time. And the relational optimization is the best in the industry.
