What do you like best about the product?
IBM DB2 is easy to install and is cheaper compared to its competitors such as Oracle. Hardware upgrade is also cheaper.
What do you dislike about the product?
Very difficult to find professional experts for IBM DB2. Efficiency monitoring could be made better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Once a DB2 environment is set-up and ready to use, it's very cheap to manage with minimal licensing & support cost.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give personal recommendations to customers regarding the best management tools to use with DB2.

Still the best for large scale data

What do you like best about the product?
Best at handling large databases that have thousands of transactions per day; very stable and reliable; allows for large user base.
What do you dislike about the product?
would like to see it easier to switch between character sets (such as EBCDIC to Unicode); additional query building tools would be nice to have
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Storage of large volumes of data; access of large volumes of data at fast speeds; very high availablility; supports large number of users accessing data

DB2 is the tried and true database.

What do you like best about the product?
When it is administered well, DB2 is lightening fast with even very very large tables and retrieval of your data is very easy from any programming language with the familiar and intuitive SAL language.
What do you dislike about the product?
When it has not been architected and maintained well, data retrieval can be very difficult. It is really only as good as the DBAs make it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have some tables with extraordinary amounts of data that are also growing bigger allbthe time. DB2 gives us the abiliry to pull from that data pool with subsecond response times.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Stick with one platform. I am working in a shop now where we have twobdatabase platforms. It's unnecessary and just makes things that much more difficult. Keep to one. If you switch, switch completely, not halfway.

Great Database Platform (For the Most Part)

  • January 12, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
DB2 is relatively simple to maintain and performs very well. It provides a wealth of enterprise class features (mirroring, replication, clustering, etc), and I've found the built in troubleshooting/monitoring tools to be quite handy. IBM support for the product has been excellent as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
Worst ODBC drivers I've ever used - and that says something. There are countless variations and packages, each with 32-bit, 64-bit, and multilanguage flavors. It's easiest if you use the GUI-based tools to create the System DSN (using the Windows ODBC interface has never once worked properly for us), but the GUI tools install a small DB instance wherever they're installed. I don't want that on my servers just to get an ODBC connection set up. The lightweight drivers only provide poorly documented CLI tools and store passwords in cleartext ini files.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our DB2 cluster mirrors our mainframe databases to act as a data repository for all our business-critical applications. Our mainframe is unable to handle the load from external queries, so the DB2 cluster acts as the read/write for all integrations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There are free products that perform just as well and likely have better integration capabilities with 3rd party applications. However, DB2 was the right fit for us because it worked natively with our aging mainframe.
