Windows Server 2019 with HyperV provides a powerful and flexible platform for virtualization

  • February 17, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Here are some of the most helpful and significant advantages of using Windows Server 2019 with HyperV:

Virtualization: HyperV allows you to create and manage virtual machines (VMs) on your server. This means you can run multiple operating systems and applications on a single physical server, which can help reduce costs and increase efficiency.

Enhanced security: Windows Server 2019 comes with advanced security features, such as Shielded VMs, which encrypt VMs and prevent unauthorized access. It also includes Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection, which helps protect against advanced persistent threats.

Improved performance: HyperV in Windows Server 2019 has been optimized for performance and can handle large workloads. It supports up to 240 virtual processors per VM, up to 12 terabytes of memory per host, and up to 64 nodes in a cluster.

Easy management: Windows Server 2019 comes with an easy-to-use management interface that allows you to manage and monitor your VMs, storage, and networking. You can also use PowerShell to automate tasks and manage your infrastructure.

Cost-effective: Windows Server 2019 with HyperV is a cost-effective solution for server virtualization, as it allows you to consolidate multiple physical servers onto a single server, which can reduce hardware, software, and maintenance costs.
What do you dislike about the product?
Here are some of the drawbacks:

Complexity: Setting up and managing a virtualized environment using Windows Server 2019 with HyperV can be complex, especially for organizations without experience in virtualization. It requires a skilled IT team and may require additional training and resources.

Resource-intensive: Running multiple VMs on a single physical server can be resource-intensive, which can affect performance. You need to ensure that you have enough processing power, memory, and storage to support your virtualized environment.

Hardware compatibility: Not all hardware is compatible with Windows Server 2019 with HyperV. You need to ensure that your hardware is compatible with HyperV, or you may need to purchase new hardware to support your virtualized environment.

License costs: Windows Server 2019 with HyperV requires a license for each physical processor on your server. The cost of these licenses can add up, especially if you are running a large virtualized environment.

Limited cross-platform support: Windows Server 2019 with HyperV is designed to run on Windows-based operating systems, which means it may not be the best option if you need to run other operating systems, such as Linux or macOS, in your virtualized environment.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 with HyperV is solving several problems related to server virtualization for administrators like me. Here are some of the problems that Windows Server 2019 with HyperV is solving:

Physical server sprawl: One of the biggest problems with traditional server infrastructure is physical server sprawl, where multiple physical servers are required to run different workloads. Windows Server 2019 with HyperV allows you to consolidate multiple physical servers onto a single server, which can reduce hardware, software, and maintenance costs.

Resource utilization: Running multiple VMs on a single physical server using HyperV can help improve resource utilization. It allows you to allocate processing power, memory, and storage as needed, which can increase efficiency and reduce costs.

Security: HyperV provides several security features that help protect against unauthorized access and data breaches. For example, Shielded VMs encrypt VMs and prevent unauthorized access, while Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection helps protect against advanced persistent threats.

Scalability: Windows Server 2019 with HyperV is highly scalable, supporting up to 240 virtual processors per VM, up to 12 terabytes of memory per host, and up to 64 nodes in a cluster. This means you can easily scale your infrastructure as your needs grow, without requiring significant hardware or software changes.

Management: Windows Server 2019 with HyperV provides an easy-to-use management interface that allows you to manage and monitor your VMs, storage, and networking. You can also use PowerShell to automate tasks and manage your infrastructure, which can increase efficiency and reduce the risk of errors.

What do you like best about the product?
Licensing VMs that are Microsoft is realy good feature. If it's data center edition, it makes life easier.
Clustering of hyperV gives all features that competitors have
What do you dislike about the product?
System center Virtual machine manager is biggest weakness of hyperV
Migration of VLANs with VMM is realy strugle and its not easy to do without startig from scratch, the cluster and SCVMM.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Consolidation of servers in virtual environment was big plus for us.
Backup is way easier when backing up VM
LiveMigration is realy easy and provides easier managment and patching of host servers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its not easy to setup and configure HyperV cluster, since there is lot of things to think about, but for us, we have been running hyperV clusters for more than 10 years. That says a lot.
