Teradata and its facts

  • April 30, 2015
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best?
Teradata architecture in itself is very robust. With features like parallel processing and linear scalability, its ensures speed and provides efficiency. The parallel-aware optimizer is the best in the industry. It's a package which when managed well provides fastest turnout and doesn't take away the advantage of having a warehouse. It supports so many applications but is equally efficient as a standalone product. With basic knowledge of the technology you can explore lot of opportunities in the business.
What do you dislike?
The tuning of huge queries can be sometimes exhausting as you want to make the optimizer behave a certain way but you are not completely sure how to do that. also the upgrades to the software or hardware can run long.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Lot of analytics are based on this warehouse. It supports lot of ad-hoc reports and with its speed it not only processes data but also provides you with information that an end user would like to see in seconds. The fact that it can cater to any business is what keeps it going. Fast, robust, secured and efficient
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's definitely a great option if you want to build a warehouse that is not only big and processes data but is fast

What do you like best?
It could process and store massive data
What do you dislike?
Not very intuitive for a new Teradata DBA. I am a DBA of another database system and just find it difficult to do things in Teradata that I could do easily in another db system

Database connection is a bit complicated as it depends on what tool is used.

Scripting is a bit challenging.

Backup is also a bit of a challenge

Security was a bit of a challenge to setup also
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Mainly used for reporting and data analysis.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make better tools that is part of the software package and not as an add-on

Partitioned table rows are each 2 or 8 bytes wider than the equivalent unpartitioned table row. Partitioned table rows are 4 bytes wider if multivalue compression is specified for the table.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
We have using Teradata a lot and its very helpful

What do you like best?
Teradata is a powerful Database which could process millions of records in seconds. The design is so simple compared to other conventional databases. One of the few databases which are using true parallelism for every process/request recieved.
What do you dislike?
Like any other massively parallel system which comes with a big price tag, Teradata is an expensive solution and hence used by very few and rich corporations compared to other conventional database systems.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
We use it for analytical processing, sales trend analysis, cost modeling on each customers. The system is also used by customer facing team to sell products comparing the sale history of the customers via tactical queries.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are planning for an EDW system which should process a million records as well as one single record with no much difference in the processing time, Teradata is the system you should look into.

I am working with Teradata since last 8 years.

What do you like best?
We often say Teradata is costly, but the all the good things come with some price. When you have data in TB then no one can beat Teradata in performance. Now Haddop has come to world but still people like to have their MARTS build in Teradata. The utilities, the work load managements and are awesome. I have seen clients who can not believe the way Teradata has shown performance improvments.
What do you dislike?
Teradata has the capabilty to work with Hadoop with Aster. But they need to think and work more on that. They should find out why clients are not choosing Aster. And more thing I would like to high light is their performance team. These team come up with some guys work with some vendors for performance and to advise on best practice. But I have seen very dumb people in their team. They should not send representative who have very less knowledge on Teradata as a performance improvment team.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
In my life I have seen several POC against Teradata, like Oracle, Exadata, Haddop.
Trust me all of them have failed. Business reports how much complex it might be, Teradata can handle that.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
They should find out more way to compete with Hadoop. They should make their server more cheap.

The latest advances in Intel chip technology quickly makes it way into the product line.
For such a scalable, flexible system many of its key performance features come as 'out of the box' functionality.
What do you dislike?
Training material is expensive and difficult to obtain - unlike Oracle database technologies.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Fraud Detection
Tailored Marketing
Financial Decision Analytics
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Has a reputation for being expensive but this has changed since Teradata separated from its NCR parent company. The Market Leader in Data Analytics.

An easy to learn and Use database

  • April 24, 2015
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best?
Teradata is an easy to understand and use RDBMS. Clients won't have to worry about maintaining the database after an initial setup. A developer can very well maintain the database without much effort.
Excellent support provided by Teradata, System once setup just using it is just a replication of what has already been setup.
Customers/Business won't have to worry about how to manage the database system, It gives what the business wants in a much hassle free manner.
The best thing is indexing , other database systems are focused on the the referential integrity checks and treats the data warehouse as any other OLTP system, Teradata's point of view maintaining database makes the business life easier.
In a nutshell it is a Cost effective, efficient, easy to use, easy to maintain and meaningful database for the data warehouse systems.
What do you dislike?
People/Clients still have a feeling that learning and using/switching to teradata is difficult
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Business wanted to see near to real time data in the warehouse, The processing capacity of teradata enables faster data load parallelly from multiple sources into Warehouse.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is like any other database, in fact better than any other database. Much easier to learn about the database than any other complex databases in the market.
Most of the management tasks are predefined and doesn't have to go through a big hassle of managing the system.
Configuration and setup is made easy by Teradata, very cost effective.
