A reliable and easy to use version control system

  • March 23, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to easy, setup and maintain.
Concise and good looks.
Support Markdown.
Support SSH private key for security connection.
Support web-hock and third-party software.
"@" and reference function in issue section.
Clearly support documents.
What do you dislike about the product?
No free private repo for individual user.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are working on O2O website. Maintaining software code is very importance to us. According to we are small business and do not have enough resource to maintain our own software code management system, Choosing a mature and popular software code management system is essential. We choose git as VSC since it is a distributed version control system designed to handle projects with speed and efficiency. And GitHub is matured online service to maintain git repo. We really happy with managing our software code on GitHub.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The best git server host provider and platform for version control systems.

What do you like best about the product?
I like to have a place for all my codes which I can easily work on, on multiple computers. But also the easiness to work with others on a code and create contacts to people working with similar things as me. The best thing would be the openness from the communities using Github
What do you dislike about the product?
I think I dislike nothing. It can be a bit tricky to use some of the more advanced settings, but that is always the case.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use github mainly for work-related projects. As a scientist I especially like the few free closed repositories for work in progress which can not be shared at the moment. I used this once for a paper. That repository was closed until the paper was accepted.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Probably the largest host for git projects, and the easy-to-use is a big plus. The amount of software available is staggering.

GitHub Saves the Day

  • March 21, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to initialize a repository and upload it within seconds.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like that you have to create the repository on GitHub before submitting. Better UX would be to be able to just submit the name of the intended repo and do something like "git push".
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The problem of unsynchronized code and lack of useful communication tools for making collaborative programming easier. I have realized that it is possible, although tedious, to work on the same project between multiple coders.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There is a small learning curve in the beginning, but this can be overcome by using the native cross-platform software.

GitHub Review

  • March 19, 2016

What do you like best about the product?
For me GitHub is a tool I use everyday, it helps staying organised in projects and save your work.
What do you dislike about the product?
Hard to find something I dislike to be honest. I have been using it since 2011 and I'm always amazed by the new features I discover using it. It's a big hosting platform for many open source projects, the bad thing about that would be that many projects are not maintained anymore but it's not really GitHub's fault. I'm sure they have some policies on how to transmit ownership of repositories. The pricing might be a bit expensive for some people.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Hosting repositories
- Keeping documentation in one place for projects
- Tracking issues in one place
- Project Managers/Developers/Designers can all report issues easily
Recommendations to others considering the product:
GitHub is simple to use, does what's it's meant for (hosting repositories), helps contributing at open source, helps you organise your projects.

GitHub is a friendly giant.

What do you like best about the product?
The UI is simple, clean, and easy to use. Although it seems like GitHub hasn't innovated in 5 years, they still remain the lowest barrier to entry for programmers looking to host their code.
What do you dislike about the product?
GitHub hasn't really done anything new or kept up with the times. They recently started taking action after a great deal of large open source projects threatened to leave, but this is incredibly reactionary and not proactive like I would expect a company like this to operate. Although I personally hate the GitLab interface, the developers actually seem to listen to the community, stay in constant communication with them, and constantly improve their service. GitHub is just about the opposite of that.

The private repos also tend to get quite expensive on GitHub. IMO, you're better off renting a cloud server at DigitalOcean and running Gogs or something for unlimited private repos at the fraction of the price.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I don't use GitHub for business; that would be too expensive for all the repositories I use. I instead use it to host all of my public open-source repositories. Some of them are real projects which get shared and modified by people at large which is great. A much larger percent of my repositories are one-off small projects which I just use GitHub to store code and essentially sync between computers (I tend to develop on ~5 computers, and using git / GitHub lets me easily sync between them).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
GitHub is THE name in open-source hosting. Despite some of their shortcomings, they've become the Google of their space. If you want ease of use and reliability, go with them. There are cheaper options available, but if you're an open source project you can get up and going very quickly.

Great product

What do you like best about the product?
I like how Github shows me the flow of my previous commits, it is a great tool for collaboration on software projects.
I also like the ability to host your website via Github pages, although its one website per Github account its still very useful.
What do you dislike about the product?
I felt when I began to use Github it was extremely daunting to use and I didn't fully understand it, it took me quite a while to get used to, and then I saw its potential.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
quick collaboration between software engineers and working through problems and bugs in my software using Github.

What do you like best about the product?
Open source projects and repository's.shared by community
What do you dislike about the product?
Don't have private repository for free users
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are a business company,
We have realized that without github sometimes projects can be very slow.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Github is your social media for coding, if you're a coder github is one of your best friend.

The best Version Control System platform available

  • March 15, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to get familiar with. Intuitive UI and the system is robust. Many documentation and tutorials to get started with this platform and with a basic understanding of git version control system, it is a must-know platform for any developers.
What do you dislike about the product?
Need improvement to organize starred repositories and No desktop client for Linux.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Github is a de-facto standard version control system platforms and It helps the development team to work remotely without no chaos and complication. Also, many open-source projects are launched at Github and this is really a good place to explore and catch the development trend.

Good company, bad product

  • March 14, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
GitHub works hard to innovate developer culture, providing things like GitHub.io, Atom, and the GH Education Pack.
What do you dislike about the product?
The GitHub GUI obscures basic git features like git log and clone. Despite all the effort they put into developing tech culture, they fail to highlight the distinction between git and GitHub, adding confusing and unclear social features that run counter to the way git works.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
GitHub works decently to deploy code and share it between developers, but where it truly excels is the fringe benefits: A year of free web hosting, a free domain, all sorts of software and resources in the Education Pack.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider BitBucket or GitLab, and MAKE SURE you know how to use git by itself first.
