Useful code management, scales well, but lacking AI

  • April 28, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We are using GitLab for team collaboration, code management, and certain CICD pipelines.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of GitLab are the CI/CD pipeline and code management.

What needs improvement?

Merge conflicts and repository maintenance could improve. If there is someone new to the system they would not know if there is a conflict.

In a feature release, it would be helpful if there was AI integrated into the system. For example, if there was a CI/CD pipeline available, we could configure them for our purpose without doing the process manually.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using GitLab for approximately four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability of GitLab a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the scalability setup of GitLab a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience using GitHub, but GitLab is a superior platform. One major advantage of GitLab is the ability to maintain a private cloud with a wide range of features. It also allows for quick setup of CI/CD pipelines. Garrett is becoming popular amongst developers for code maintenance.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of GitLab takes a long time because there is a lot to configure.

I rate the initial setup of GitLab a seven out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I rate GitLab a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

Easy to use. The pipelines are easy to maintain. The UI is clean.
What do you dislike about the product?
The browser checking window at the begining is a bit annoying.

Complete soultion for Project Management in Agile

  • February 13, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's a complete solution starting from raising issues, managing scrums, and backlog to code versioning, reviews, and continuous integration and deployment and report generation for velocities.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have started using the tool for backlog grooming also, it's difficult to add a new task in GitLab because it allows only the title but to add details we need to click multiple times.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using the tool for end-to-end project management, backlog management, running our sprints, code versioning, and code reviews, and continuous integration. This allow us to save a lot of time and we have reduced the time to market by 50%.

The Pros and Cons of Using GitLab for Software Development

  • January 04, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
GitLab allows developers to host, manage, and track changes to their code repositories. It includes features such as branch management, code review, and merge conflict resolution to help teams work efficiently on projects
What do you dislike about the product?
GitLab has a relatively robust set of built-in features and tools, but it may not have as many third-party integrations as other platforms. This can limit the flexibility and customization options available to users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
GitLab includes collaboration features such as team chat, video conferencing, and the ability to add external users to projects. These features make it easier for our teams to communicate and work together, regardless of location.

Descent deployment platform

  • November 12, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In an organisational set up, GitLab is one the most promising platforms when it comes to deployment and continuous delivery. I have already used GitHub and there's not much different as such. Thus, I easily got my hands on gitlab as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
The response time bothers me often as sometimes large commits are not completed in one go, multiple tries are to be done. This makes the delay in continuous delivery.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Even the smallest commit is handled the same way, my continuous delivery support doesn't break, it helps me in integration with tools like Jenkins and all very smoothly.

What do you like best about the product?
Compatibility with tools and local environment is seamless. It integrates well into a team's workflow and has not presented with any glitches
What do you dislike about the product?
The support system is not at par with its competitors. Handling public and private keys introduced delays in getting the work delivered.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Gitlab solves the version control of code and scripts that my team collaborates on. It has ensured that there are no conflicts b/w stakeholders and parallel work can continue.

Project repository

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The most helpful thing about GitLab is that it can help users to collaborate at any time.
Multiple users can work on a single project.
We can automate the project on Gitlab.
It is very easy to use for the developer at any place to edit the code.
What do you dislike about the product?
The least helpful thing about the Gitlab is weird commands and directions they provide to their users.
Definitely, it is not the best platform for beginners to add their projects.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Gitlab helps to multiple developers to work and collaborate at any place which is a very big advantage from the business point of view.
Another advantage is we can host our project with just a few commands. it saves time, keeps everything organized and make it easies for teams to collaborate and release better software faster
