What do you like best about the product?
Very good source control repository system with functionality of collaboration with team and project management. Interactive User interface with editing function for different types of files. Code can be shared among team members and it also so different code commits along with changed code. It has version wise code . From a master branch different branches can be created and merged as well. It also indicates conflicts while merging the code. Rich in terms of community support.
What do you dislike about the product?
Code conflict while committing and pushing the code is a tedious job. The functionality of code merging should be improved in the web version of git lab. The notification time should be improved regarding different activities.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Source control for our project, along with maintenance of code. We are keeping different libraries on the repository and maintaining previous stable versions of the entire project. Managing issues along with collaboration.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Very good version control for source code along with functionality of code review and collaboration makes it perfect choice for working on a project in collaborative manner. It also integrate with other software.

Everything you need for development

  • November 07, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Comprehensive, end-to-end coverage of the entire software development process. There's no need to worry about cobbling together a bunch of disparate projects and maintain the glue that holds everything together. GitLab gives back to the open source community by offering free GitLab Enterprise licenses to open source software developers.
What do you dislike about the product?
GitLab's documentation is comprehensive but not always intuitive. For a project of this magnitude, it should focus on including more training instructions in addition to the reference documentation to show real-world examples of how people can use it.

The company behind GitLab has made some questionable decisions, although it has recovered well for them. For instance, most recently, they decided to embed a whole lot of telemetry in GitLab. They backpedaled after a day when the community erupted in protest. I'm glad they listened, but I have to think: what were they thinking?

There are so many services that spy on users these days that having a trustworthy reputation is priceless. That reputation has been tarnished.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The software developers I know use a workflow comprised of individual products stitched together. The time maintaining that is time that could be better spent doing what developers do best: developing. When I had an opportunity to recommend a product for my department's workflow, I chose GitLab, and I haven't been disappointed.

It isn't hard to see why GitLab is so popular; it has more or less everything you need. Some of its components aren't quite as strong as competitors, but nothing touches the sheer amount of stuff it packs into each release. The developers seem genuinely interested in DevOps and supporting the open source community.

Like, after Microsoft bought GitHub, some open source developers who were opposed to using Microsoft products (bravo!) wanted to migrate their projects to an alternative. GitLab transitioned their hosted offering way from Azure and offered free GitLab Gold licenses to educational institutions and open source developers. I gained a great deal of respect for GitLab through that. (Yes, I'm one of *those people* who doesn't trust Microsoft's apparent change of heart on open source.)

GitLab has helped me master Git, CI/CD pipelines, and software development in general through the many resources it offers. I don't have to spend time learning so many separate services and figuring out how everything fits together. I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a great tool for their development activities.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's a little expensive, especially when you consider that a lot of component services may be free, but don't be penny-wise and pound-foolish - there's a lot of value for having everything under one roof.
