GitLab for group work

  • October 24, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is a well-known and intuitive repository, used in various parts of the world for educational and work purposes. The best attributes are the group participation in a project where there are tools that allow resolving conflicts between different codes, you can also observe the activity of other members and revert to previous versions of the project at any time. Additionally, the software provides a summary of all commits and activity in the project, which is useful for a general evaluation.
What do you dislike about the product?
Conflicts caused between users of a project are not so easy to resolve; often, poor resolution of these results in the loss of work for one of the members. Implement ways to resolve conflicts more intuitively.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In my case, the use is educational to learn programming and to undertake increasingly larger projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The main thing is to learn to use it, it is a very practical and useful tool. Be careful with merges to avoid causing conflicts.

Does what it's supposed to to.

What do you like best about the product?
Above all else Gitlab is a service for hosting git repositories. It's not overly expensive, and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Aside of the source code repository, Gitlab offers a lot of other sections (CI/CD, Wiki, Issue tracker). Those features may be irrelevant to you if you are already using something else, which is highly likely.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Gitlab can host private Git repository which allows to collaborate with others as an alternative to Github, Bitbucket.

Initial hiccups, some slowness but overall decent product

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to understand UI, good integration with JIRA, good diffs on merge request, easy to approve/merge, assignees, member groups, easy reverts
What do you dislike about the product?
The wiki pages seem extremely slow to load. When browsing through our repo's wiki, it takes a long time to see all the pages and it's best if we bookmark commonly viewed pages as navigating through slowly sucks. And there's no search to boot.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Version control with many different product groups, easy reverting, lots of repos, private repos for enterprise, wiki pages

What do you like best about the product?
We can combine everything we need in this one platform
What do you dislike about the product?
It's not that fast if you use the hosted version. We switched to a self-hosted version for reliability and performance
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use gitlab to store all our private repositories, process our builds, and deploy's to a kubernetes cluster
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use the self-hosted version if possible

Like Github, but a bit worse

  • September 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that it provides almost all the functionalities that GitHub provides. It supports a wide variety of of features that works great if your company wants to integrate pipelining with their source control. It also has very intuitive and easy to use UI which is always helpful as not every users want to use command line. It also has great integration with Jira, and that is the Agile board that we use so it's really helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
We have experienced random connection issues with GitLab either when pulling or pushing to our repo. The web interface also seems to be slow sometimes, and it is definitely not due to our internet connection. Also the profile view isn't as good as GitHub if that is something you or your organization cares about.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our company was mainly using it as a centralize source control for most of our code base. Based on our purpose, GitLab was able to fulfill the job and fit our work flow wonderfully. We are also using Perforce and that is an old and ancient platform, so GitLab was well appreciated by our team.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would consider using GitHub first before trying GitLab as it is the same, but offers more functionality.

Great alternative to GitHub

  • July 28, 2018

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use user interface and functionality similar to GitHub. Merge requests, peer review. Built-in CI with GitLab CI.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lacks the social exposure and popular projects that are on GitHub.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
VCS code repositories, internally hosted and secure, continuous integration.
