SophosExternal reviews
External reviews are not included in the AWS star rating for the product.
Wide organization control
Enables secure website access while requiring enhanced SD-WAN configuration
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Sophos XG provides us with unlimited VPN users, which is very useful. Its in-built reporting functionality is also highly beneficial. Additionally, we are currently utilizing the threat intelligence features.
What needs improvement?
Sophos XG should concentrate on improving SD-WAN solutions. Currently, the in-built GUI doesn't support configuring SD-WAN. If configuration from the firewall itself was possible, it would be very useful for us. Presently, we rely on Sophos Central to make configuration changes.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Sophos XG for over six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would rate the stability of Sophos XG as a nine out of ten.

Efficient network management achieved with ease, but documentation and pricing need enhancement
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Sophos XG has allowed us to implement all kinds of firewall rules and manage bandwidth efficiently. By prioritizing bandwidth for our ERP hosted in Amazon Cloud and de-prioritizing non-essential sites, it has greatly improved our network management. The user interface is easy to navigate, making administration tasks straightforward. In terms of backup, reinstallation, and DHCP configuration, Sophos XG is very straightforward compared to other solutions.
What needs improvement?
The knowledge base needs improvement, particularly in terms of community support and training videos on platforms like YouTube. Compared to other firewalls, Sophos XG documentation is somewhat confusing and can be difficult to use. The licensing model could also be improved to cater to smaller offices, as the current minimum purchase is for 50 users, which can be expensive. Incorporating AI technology for enhanced learning and easier configurations would make the solution more robust.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Sophos XG since they took over Cyberoam, and I switched from Cyberoam to Sophos XG.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Sophos XG is very stable, even when serving as a DHCP server. Unlike some other firewalls, it does not overheat when certain features are enabled.
How are customer service and support?
Our experience with customer service is excellent. We are supported by the guys who resell Sophos XG, and their technical team is well-trained and knowledgeable.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
How was the initial setup?
The setup process for Sophos XG is very straightforward, especially when compared to other firewalls.
What about the implementation team?
We were supported by our reseller's technical team, who were well-trained and knowledgeable.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The Sophos XG costs about $1,300 annually for a license for up to 50 people. Comparatively, FortiGate offers similar features and IPsec for $1,600 annually.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I evaluated FortiGate and Palo Alto before choosing Sophos XG.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Sophos XG a seven out of ten. Incorporating AI technology for enhanced configurations would improve its overall value.
Efficient application filtering and generally good support with room for VPN setup enhancement
What is our primary use case?
Our primary use case is focused on renewing outdated firewalls and providing VPN capabilities without additional licensing costs.
How has it helped my organization?
The firewall helped by providing VPN licensing for free, unlike other vendors that charge for VPN.
What is most valuable?
The application filtering, especially cloud filtering, is valuable. It's able to detect cloud applications like Zoom or Microsoft Teams and allows traffic shaping based on the application.
What needs improvement?
VPN setup could be improved. Fixing some bugs would also be beneficial.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Sophos XGS firewall for approximately two years and one month.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is very stable as long as there's no power outage or similar interruption.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The firewall is quite scalable. I would rate its scalability seven out of ten since modules can be added.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support is generally good. There may be delays with standard support due to inexperienced first-level support. Overall, I would rate it seven out of ten.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for the XGS firewall can be rated as seven out of ten due to VPN setup challenges.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Sophos XGS is quite expensive, potentially a nine out of ten in terms of cost, making it much pricier than other firewalls.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend it for its user-friendly interface. Even novice users can catch up quickly without confusion.
I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.
Effective, powerful network security features with room for improved support
What is our primary use case?
We work with the entire portfolio of Sophos as we are a Sophos partner. We always wish to sell Sophos's entire portfolio to the client.
What is most valuable?
The features that I find most effective in enhancing network security include EDR and XDR.
What needs improvement?
Sophos needs to do a lot of roadshows to attract enterprise customers. Their marketing strategy is quite low, and they need to enhance engagement with partners. There's room for improvement in their response time for technical support.
For how long have I used the solution?
It's been almost four years.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is good enough. That said, since the changeover of their ERP system, they are facing problems, and the partners are also facing problems in the portal. The response time should be improved.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We are dealing with other vendors like Fortinet, Palo Alto, and Check Point. When the client uptake is known for Sophos, then we try to pitch Fortinet.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
When it comes to email security and endpoint securities, Sophos pricing is higher than other vendors when compared competitively. For firewalls, to some extent, it is okay. People don't consider Sophos as an enterprise product; they consider it as an SME product.
What other advice do I have?
I recommend Sophos Next. Js to others. But when people don't consider Sophos as an enterprise product, we try to pitch Fortinet.
I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.
Provides good IPS, IDS, and web application security, but it is very expensive
What is our primary use case?
We use Sophos XGS firewall for edge control.
What is most valuable?
The solution's most valuable features are IPS, IDS, and web application security.
What needs improvement?
Sophos XGS should improve its customer service and educate its implementation partner. It should also work on building relationships with customers directly because there is no Sophos office or person to handle the Pakistan region. If Sophos opens its local office, its business will increase. Sophos XGS should train the technical staff about new challenges in security.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Sophos XGS for almost three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Sophos XGS is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
At our data center head office, we have two high-availability devices. On the remote side, we are using a single piece of equipment. All these are XGS 2000, 126, and 200 series. So, we have already chosen a scalable solution. Around 700 users are using the solution in our organization.
How was the initial setup?
The solution’s initial setup is straightforward. It took hardly one hour to deploy the solution.
What about the implementation team?
We have outsourced the solution's deployment to a service provider or implementation partner. A team of professionals went on-site and installed it, and the configuration will be done through our remote support.
We signed a three-year support contract with the implementation partner when we purchased the hardware. Now, they are providing support, but it is not good. We have lodged an official complaint against the implementation partner because they sometimes refuse to provide support.
Initially, we were going with another partner, but the distributor recommended Information Systems Associates Pvt Ltd to us. So, I have also lodged an official complaint against the distributor.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Sophos XGS is a very expensive solution. It cost us $ 33,000. Huawei and Sangfor make much cheaper firewalls available in Pakistan. The equipment is being sold at throwaway prices. If we compare the market prices, the acquisition cost of Sophos XGS is much higher than that of the other market competitors. However, Sophos XGS is cheaper than Palo Alto.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Its competitor, Sangfor, provides an add-on EDR feature with the same firewall. Each and every node is connected with the firewall through EDR because all traffic is monitored. This functionality is not available in Sophos.
What other advice do I have?
The solution provides threat intelligence capabilities, but some other tools are much better than Sophos XGS. I would recommend the solution to other users.
Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.
Stable and affordable
What is our primary use case?
We typically use Sophos XGS for things like (UTM, acting as a proxy, managing routing, and for point-to-point connections.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of Sophos XGS for me are XGS IPS, SD-WAN, VPN setup, email protection, and integration with endpoint security.
What needs improvement?
Areas for improvement in Sophos XGS include better balance when handling high availability configurations, smoother firmware upgrades without the need for turning off devices, and simplified configuration after firmware updates.
In the next release of Sophos XGS, I would like to see improvements in log searching within the interface and more functionality available without needing to go to the command line, especially for troubleshooting purposes.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Sophos XGS for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Sophos XGS is stable and resilient, even in environments with power fluctuations and instability.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability with Sophos XGS is generally good, but there can be frustrations with switches when setting up VPNs. I would rate the scalability as a four out of ten.
I believe the scalability of Sophos XGS can be improved, especially when compared to competitors like Palo Alto and Check Point. While it is a good product, there is room for enhancement to compete better in scalability challenges.
How are customer service and support?
I would rate the technical support as a seven out of ten.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before Sophos XGS, I used Check Point, Palo Alto, and Cisco data solutions. I switched to Sophos because it is more affordable.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of Sophos XGS is generally simple, especially for basic internet access with default features, but more complex configurations may have some difficulties. Overall, it is quick and stable.
It took less than an hour and a half to deploy Sophos XGS initially, including setting up internet access and basic firewall rules. However, migrating from older versions to the new setup took longer due to compatibility issues with the old settings.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Sophos XGS is quite affordable.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I would rate Sophos XGS as a seven out of ten. I would recommend it to others.
Enhances network security and has good threat intelligence capabilities, but doesn't notify users about downtime or errors
What is our primary use case?
We use the solution as an antivirus gateway and internet gateway.
What is most valuable?
All the features are effective in enhancing our network security. I am satisfied with the product. The threat intelligence capabilities of the tool are good. It has contributed to reducing our overall security costs by approximately 90%.
What needs improvement?
I do not get notifications regarding ISP downtime. It would be better if I could get notifications related to the critical errors occurring in Sophos. The product is difficult to use. The administrators must be notified of the errors occurring in the firewall through emails or messages. It will help organizations take proactive measures instead of taking action after the incident happens.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for one and a half years.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support is weak. The support team is not responsive. The support people do not follow up or call us back.
How was the initial setup?
The implementation is not difficult. The service providers help install and implement the firewall in our network.
What other advice do I have?
I will recommend the product to others. However, I would not recommend it to organizations that do not have technical people who deal with networks. Overall, I rate the product a seven out of ten.
Improves the network security posture of organizations, but the support and web filtering capabilities must be improved
How has it helped my organization?
The product has improved our network security posture. We got some phishing and malware attacks. We found out that someone was attacking our network. Since we installed the solution, we are not facing any attacks.
What is most valuable?
IPS works smoothly. The policies and rules work fine. The network performance and reporting tools of Sophos XG are good.
What needs improvement?
We are facing a little bit of an issue with the product's web filtering capabilities. It must be improved. SD-WAN can be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for almost two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s stability a seven or eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s scalability a seven or eight out of ten. Almost 5000 people are using the solution in our organization. We have installed the firewall. It is always running.
How are customer service and support?
The support takes a lot of time to resolve issues.
How was the initial setup?
I rate the ease of setup a seven out of ten. The deployment took a few weeks.
What about the implementation team?
The deployment was done in-house. We needed two to three people for the deployment.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I rate the pricing a seven or eight out of ten.
What other advice do I have?
I will recommend the product to others. The solution is not extremely good, but it is good. Overall, I rate the product a seven or eight out of ten.
