Deployment is straightforward while interface complexity leads to challenges

  • May 28, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Our main use case at the moment for Sophos XG is to create a site-to-site VPN with one of our clients. We cannot use AWS VPN, so we use Sophos XG.

We only used the VPN functionality. We did not explore other aspects of the product beyond the VPN capabilities.

What is most valuable?

The IPsec VPN is the only feature we utilized in Sophos XG. We did not explore the web and application filtering capabilities, and these features have not helped our organization in managing bandwidth or access to malicious sites.

What needs improvement?

The user-friendly interface of Sophos XG is acceptable but too complicated. There are many options and configurations, but it is very complicated to navigate through all those options if you are not familiar with the product.

Sophos XG can be improved by making the UI more user-friendly. They should add packet capture functionality in the UI instead of requiring users to access the server directly for this purpose, as it is a very useful tool that everyone needs. Additionally, it can be confusing when working in the AWS Marketplace, as users might mistakenly purchase the old version of Sophos XG.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG for three or four months. It is new, and we may discontinue using this product because it has not met our requirements.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Considering the deployment flexibility of the Sophos XG firewall, hybrid deployments have not supported our organization's diverse technological infrastructure.

It is a bit early to tell, but Sophos XG is adequate for my company's growing needs at present.

How are customer service and support?

I have not tried their customer service and technical support.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have considered other solutions before Sophos XG, including pfSense, AWS firewall, and Kato firewall.

I was previously using AWS firewall and Kato firewall before switching to Sophos XG.

How was the initial setup?

My experience with deploying Sophos XG was easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing was through AWS.

What other advice do I have?

I do not use the security heartbeat functionality.

I have not tried the synchronized security feature of the Sophos XG firewall.

I am not particularly interested in being a reference to the vendor. We do not use Sophos extensively, so I may not provide substantial insights.

What led me to consider changing was that we thought the VPN configuration was not working because of the product we used to work with, so we tried other alternatives.

On a scale of 1-10, I would rate Sophos XG a seven or eight, though this rating is limited by our minimal usage of the product.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Reliable network routing enhances connectivity, but data protection needs attention

  • April 29, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for Sophos XG is for two reasons: the firewall capability for protection against malware and Sophos XG's extended capability in routing and IP routing. I use it in a small organization.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Sophos XG is its routing and network routing capabilities. I particularly appreciate the routing capabilities that Sophos XG has.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in the cybersecurity and personal information protection areas of Sophos XG.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG for about seven years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

The initial setup was complex, but since our last conversation, I am happy with what I have.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability of Sophos XG as nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability of Sophos XG at about an eight.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support directly from Sophos is not that great, which is why I had to employ a local company that deals with it more to assist me.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I used a different solution before Sophos XG, but it did not provide the routing capabilities that Sophos XG has, which is why I switched.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Sophos XG was complex, but after our last conversation, I am content with the product.

What about the implementation team?

As an end user, I am not involved in the installation process.

What was our ROI?

The problem with the return on investment for Sophos XG is the three-year license. The license fees are extremely expensive, and in most cases, once the license has expired, Sophos requires the purchase of new hardware if one decides to run it online, which is a major drawback.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Sophos XG is extremely expensive compared to other products, but its capabilities warrant the cost. However, the three-year license fees are significantly high.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I looked between Sophos and FortiGate before deciding on Sophos XG.

What other advice do I have?

Based on my experience, I would recommend Sophos XG to other people. The overall rating I would give this solution is seven.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Enables secure website access while requiring enhanced SD-WAN configuration

  • April 22, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Most of our customers want to block their websites, especially those in the financial sector. They desire access to only required websites while blocking the rest. We have also installed certificate-based scanning for inspection.

What is most valuable?

Sophos XG provides us with unlimited VPN users, which is very useful. Its in-built reporting functionality is also highly beneficial. Additionally, we are currently utilizing the threat intelligence features.

What needs improvement?

Sophos XG should concentrate on improving SD-WAN solutions. Currently, the in-built GUI doesn't support configuring SD-WAN. If configuration from the firewall itself was possible, it would be very useful for us. Presently, we rely on Sophos Central to make configuration changes.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Sophos XG for over six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability of Sophos XG as a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I would rate the scalability of Sophos XG as a six out of ten. There is room for improvement in the scalability aspects.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support from Sophos is good and satisfactory.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Sophos XG is simple.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for Sophos XG is comparatively low. Compared to other firewalls, it is low in price.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I would compare Sophos XG to SonicWall. SonicWall has multiple features, including inbuilt endpoint security and a lot of features compared to Sophos XG.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate Sophos XG as a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

Offers secure cost-effective network protection but could restore proxy options for legacy apps

  • April 11, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We sell Sophos XG devices.

What is most valuable?

Sophos XG includes all basic features and has a secured proxy mechanism. Network security proxy authentication is available through a web-based proxy. The older proxy mechanism is not there. Pricing is very competitive, much cheaper compared to other brands like Palo Alto, Check Point, and Fortinet. Additionally, the performance of the hardware has been increased, although it is not negligible compared to other brands.

What needs improvement?

The direct proxy or proxy mechanism is missing. Legacy applications should have this option, but Sophos XG has removed it. This feature was available in UTM nine but not in XG.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG for one or two years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deploying Sophos XG was not difficult. It took a couple of weeks to fully deploy the solution, and the process was quite fast and not complicated.

How are customer service and support?

I have premium support from Sophos, and the support is good. They respond well and have a good support team.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Pricing of Sophos XG is very good compared to other brands. The pricing is very cheap. For example, if Palo Alto is priced at 200, then Sophos is priced at 75, which is a significant difference.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the overall solution between seven and eight.

Efficient network management achieved with ease, but documentation and pricing need enhancement

  • February 27, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We have an ERP that's in-house, and we use Sophos XG to generate a VPN client file, import it, and utilize the connectivity with low latency. This allows us to access our office systems remotely using the Sophos XG connection.

What is most valuable?

Sophos XG has allowed us to implement all kinds of firewall rules and manage bandwidth efficiently. By prioritizing bandwidth for our ERP hosted in Amazon Cloud and de-prioritizing non-essential sites, it has greatly improved our network management. The user interface is easy to navigate, making administration tasks straightforward. In terms of backup, reinstallation, and DHCP configuration, Sophos XG is very straightforward compared to other solutions.

What needs improvement?

The knowledge base needs improvement, particularly in terms of community support and training videos on platforms like YouTube. Compared to other firewalls, Sophos XG documentation is somewhat confusing and can be difficult to use. The licensing model could also be improved to cater to smaller offices, as the current minimum purchase is for 50 users, which can be expensive. Incorporating AI technology for enhanced learning and easier configurations would make the solution more robust.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG since they took over Cyberoam, and I switched from Cyberoam to Sophos XG.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Sophos XG is very stable, even when serving as a DHCP server. Unlike some other firewalls, it does not overheat when certain features are enabled.

How are customer service and support?

Our experience with customer service is excellent. We are supported by the guys who resell Sophos XG, and their technical team is well-trained and knowledgeable.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with FortiGate and Palo Alto. However, we switched to Sophos XG because FortiGate was expensive.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process for Sophos XG is very straightforward, especially when compared to other firewalls.

What about the implementation team?

We were supported by our reseller's technical team, who were well-trained and knowledgeable.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The Sophos XG costs about $1,300 annually for a license for up to 50 people. Comparatively, FortiGate offers similar features and IPsec for $1,600 annually.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I evaluated FortiGate and Palo Alto before choosing Sophos XG.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Sophos XG a seven out of ten. Incorporating AI technology for enhanced configurations would improve its overall value.

I rate the pricing a seven or eight out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I will recommend the product to others. The solution is not extremely good, but it is good. Overall, I rate the product a seven or eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Offers good performance but needs to improve on the flexibility part

  • March 01, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my internal network for my home office, for which I have applied a router in my home. I have deployed a couple of switches in my home network, but I need to secure my network from attacks.

What is most valuable?

Adaptive security is the most usable and most efficient feature in Sophos XG. The performance and scalability of the tool are advantageous areas.

What needs improvement?

With the firewall part in Sophos XG, it is not very flexible if you want to block access to a particular site during your internal usage. The tool is not able to block access to a particular website instantly or easily since it takes a considerable amount of time to configure a few things. If you specify that a user should not be able to go to www.google.com, it should be denied for sure.

The support engineers of the product are not very tech-savvy, making it an area where improvements are required.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG for four years. I am a customer of the product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

At times, there are some issues that I have faced with the stability of the product. Not many firmware updates pushed into the tool are bug-free, and because of this, I face issues.

I rate the tool's stability a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is a scalable solution.

How are customer service and support?

Based on my experience with the product's support team, I feel that Sophos provides good technical support to its users.

I rate the technical support a six out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

How was the initial setup?

The product's initial setup phase was easy, especially compared to Cisco.

The solution is deployed on the cloud. I have also worked with the on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in only a couple of hours.

What other advice do I have?

The product has improved the security posture. Sophos XG provides features that are almost the same as those Cisco Firepower devices provide. I would say that a couple of features in Sophos XG are the same as the ones provided by other Cisco devices, which are top-notch.

The management tools or log-related solutions that are presented with Sophos are okay but not top-notch when it comes to Cisco. I rate the reporting and visibility tools in Sophos XG a six out of ten compared to Cisco.

Sophos xG's integration capabilities do not apply to a limited number of security tools. Cisco provides integration capabilities with many products, while Sophos XG offers integration with a limited number of products. Cisco provides integration capability with almost any tool that is present in the world. Cisco works day and night to ensure that it provides good integration capabilities with the solutions.

I recommend the tool to those who plan to use it, especially if you own a very small office where you don't need a product with too many functionalities.

I rate the tool a seven out of ten.

User-friendly and easy to manage but needs improvement in the throughput area

  • February 27, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution in my company as an edge device on our network.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable feature stems from its ability to protect our organization's web servers.

What needs improvement?

In Sophos XG, the throughput for larger networks is an area of concern where improvements are required.

I hope the product comes up with some better prices and offers for the tools provided to academic institutions.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Sophos XG for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a six out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

There are around 200 to 300 users in our institution.

Though our institution plans to increase the solution's use, we are unsure about the vendor we want to approach.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the product's initial setup phase a seven on a scale of one to ten, where one means it is a difficult process and ten means it has an easy setup phase.

The solution is deployed on an on-premises model.

The solution can be deployed in two to three days.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My company considers Fortinet as an option against Sophos XG.

What other advice do I have?

The product has improved network security for all the networks in my organization. The product also offers endpoint security since my organization has been using the anti-virus software from Sophos for the past ten years.

Sophos XG's interface is very user-friendly.

The performance of Sophos XG's VPN to meet the organization's remote access needs is an area that cannot be discussed due to security concerns. Though the product can meet our organization's current requirements, we are considering alternate solutions since we have plans to improve our network.

The reporting and analytics functionalities helped identify security incidents in our company.

I recommend the product to those who plan to use it because it is easy to manage and solve network-related problems.

I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Has good technical support services, but the GUI needs enhancement

  • February 20, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What needs improvement?

We encounter difficulties while navigating through certain features and functionalities of the product. The GUI could be much more transparent.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Sophos XG for two years. At present, we use the latest version.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the product’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have around 15 to 20 customers using Sophos XG. It is suitable for larger companies. We have around 200 technical engineers in our organization managing it. I rate the scalability a nine out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team is friendly and supportive in terms of technical assistance.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are working with CheckPoint, SonicWall, and FortiGate.

How was the initial setup?

The deployment method involves navigating through several pages, such as selecting the country and configuring LAN and WAN ports, before reaching the manual configuration stage. Instead, simplifying the process by allowing users to log in directly to the dashboard and initiate configuration without additional prompts could be helpful. The implementation time depends on specific firewall requirements.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is more expensive than SonicWall. Our customers compare devices for office compatibility, such as Sophos XG 4100 and SonicWall NSA 2300, and question license cost disparities.

I rate the pricing a six out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

The product’s new variant allows for faster processing of data packets from LAN to WAN, surpassing the capabilities of an 8G firewall. It provides threat prevention features, including WAF, IPS, and AV. We have configured SSL VPN capabilities for different branches, which have been working efficiently. For our minimalistic usage, it has been performing well in transferring data from on-premise devices. It helps us generate detailed reports on the dashboard. The product’s integration with Sophos Central enhances security architecture by enabling centralized management under a single dashboard.

We recommend Sophos XG as a priority as it is much more reliable and has efficient technical assistance. It is much easier for configuration, web filtering, or web extension than one of its competitors.

I rate it a seven out of ten.

Sophos XG Firewall

  • July 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have the same Internet access regardless of which computer I connect to, it shows alerts of the dangerous pages, and it makes revision of the emails and we the users are not affected.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not the same work console of all the Sophos applications that the company has.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Now we have a VPN for all users and mobile devices, when we have to do an exhibition we only take a device and when we connect it we have a safe navigation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
They must put together a security plan and create necessary policies, before buying the equipment, which will save you a lot of time in the implementation.
