The Best Linux Distribution I ever saw

  • December 31, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution just like many others, it comes with utilites and apps out of the box, it feels like having any normal operating system, it's open-source, completely free to use, and it's so so lightweight, so it could be a great solution for any old laptop you got at home.
What do you dislike about the product?
Like, Ubuntu is great and I seriously have think nothing is bad about it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I installed Ubuntu on my Windows laptop as Windows isn't the right operating system for advanced developers, WSL just slows your PC down and having a Linux running normally is way better.

Still the most balanced Linux Distro to date

  • December 24, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Like always, Ubuntu strikes a nice balance between being user friendly while maintaining the complex linux ecosystem.
Ubuntu 22.04 is the biggest update I've seen in recent years, and brings some nice features to the table, like the revamped screenshot and recording system. The UI is the best it's ever been, it almost feels like Windows. And I don't have to go through any hassle to install GPU driver updates, the software center handles it perfectly. I also love being able to switch workspaces.
It comes with python pre-installed and the apt package manager does a good job at sticking with latest stable release. Creating and managing python interpreters, packages and virtual environments is so quick, easy and portable. It makes it so convenient for me as an AI engineer myself that uses python exclusively
What do you dislike about the product?
Battery drain is a concern when you're using a laptop. There were occasional kernel crashes when under heavy RAM usage, although this could be related to the specs I were using.
Certain UI customizations are locked until you install gnome tweaks, I feel like its completely unnecessary. Also Gnome itself being a snap package doesn't fill me with confidence. I hope they get rid of the snap store for the next release and move to synaptic or flatpak
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've been using the Ubuntu desktop LTS version exclusively for the last 2 years for all academic tasks and split the professional work with a MacOS. It was my first linux distro and I never felt like switching to a different one. It helped me get familiar with the linux environment and eventually deploy my own projects to linux cloud environements. And I can work in confidence, knowing no malware can effect my computer. In short, it's my favorite operating system, except for gaming

The product is easy to use and has excellent performance and availability

  • December 20, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution as a backend production server. We run our Docker containers on Ubuntu. We mainly use it for automotive charging software.

What is most valuable?

The product is easy to use. I like the tool’s performance and availability.

What needs improvement?

The product must provide integrated security solutions. I use third-party security solutions now.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for two to four years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Currently, we are trying to implement our solution with the Kubernetes environment. We need horizontal scalability, not vertical. When we need more capacity, we add another server and distribute the load onto the new server.

How are customer service and support?

We do not use support because the answers in the community forums are enough for us. If we gain more customers in the future, we might need support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using Windows before. I like Ubuntu’s performance compared to Windows.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is really straightforward. It is not complex. We develop DevOps scripts to deploy it. It takes only one or two hours. If the hardware is available, then it will take only one hour. We prepare the hardware environment and deploy the solution. After that, we deploy the Docker container environment. Then, we run the whole software. The product is deployed on-premises because we are still in the testing phase. We have a small number of customers. In the future, we will try to migrate to the cloud.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is cheap compared to Windows. We pay a yearly license fee. I rate the pricing a four out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I do my job directly on the terminal server. Ubuntu is a good choice. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.

Review for ubuntu

  • December 19, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The enhanced GNOME desktop along with dark mode support is too notch.
The user friendly installer has made the installation of software and packages has become somewhat simple
Ubuntu pro offered extended security Maintainace & compliance
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu can sometimes feel heavier on resources compared to lighter distribution.
With multiple updates types it can lead to confusion for new users.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using ubuntu as operating system for the cloud servers.
With centsOS coming to an end the use of ubuntu has increased in users.
With supported panels non technical users can also handle it.
Also as it is users friendly can be easily customized and users can download it anytime on their own servers

A stable solution that is easy to access and deploy and has a helpful community of users

  • December 18, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for sandboxing and testing. We also have our production servers in Linux sometimes.

How has it helped my organization?

The product is easy to access and deploy. There are a lot of communities that help administrators with any challenges. Good support is available over the Internet. It is quite helpful for creating any server. Many communities are working on the upcoming advanced features and making them easier for the end users.

What is most valuable?

The integration with other solutions like Apache is valuable.

What needs improvement?

Official support is low. We’re mostly dependent on community users. The vendor must provide an official support team. Administration is a challenge. We need good skills for implementation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for 10 to 12 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is quite stable. I rate the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool is scalable. I rate the scalability a nine out of ten. We usually publish our web servers on it. It is for production purposes. Five to six people from our organization are working on Linux administration. We also have developers developing applications on it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used CentOS. CentOS is now decommissioned, so we moved to Ubuntu Linux.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the ease of setup a seven out of ten. Ubuntu is a command-line tool. It will be a bit of a challenge for new users. The cloud deployment takes four to six hours. If we already have VMs on-premise, we can deploy them in four to six hours. We just need to install an image and build it in. Nowadays, we have readymade images available as a container. It hardly takes one hour to get the server up and running. One person is enough for the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is open-sourced.

What other advice do I have?

If someone wants to create cheap servers, Ubuntu Linux is the best choice. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

A reliable, user-friendly, and secure operating system

  • December 13, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu proved to be very cost effective and easy to manage. First of all it has very easy and improved user interface. Security features are just top of the class. The OS is stable for days without having to reboot without performance degrade. We also gets regular security updates, so we know we are safe.
What do you dislike about the product?
Compatibility issues with proprietary software and limited support for industry-specific tools
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
There are number of problems that are solved to list a few.

It is cost effect thus saving a lot of money. Bein open source means we can add our fetures as well if required. It protected us from quite many DDos attempts. Solved most of of renting a server problems.
