A customer data platform useful for data science
What do you like best about the product?
The dual role of Segment as both CDI and CDP really helps for customizing segmentations at a very granular data collection level. This can be especially useful if a marketing team wishes to hand over data to their data scientists. For example, customer journey analysis is much simpler to model compared with other tools, namely DMPs.
What do you dislike about the product?
Customization comes with a steeper learning curve for analytics developers. One can't simply take a tagging strategy from Google Analytics or Tag Manager and copy / paste. You have to get familiar with specific concepts, like identify calls, which might not be intuitive for the non-initiate. Nonetheless, once you do understand the concept, it's great!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Customer data orchestration and customer journey analysis.
Powerful and versatile
What do you like best about the product?
It's extremely easy to setup and install and it provides components for almost any system (Javascript, API, SDK, Server calls, ...) and then you can connect whatever analytics, CRM, data warehouse you want with a few clicks and no coding at all.
And with Personas you can really take full advantage of the data you collect. Wonderful!
And with Personas you can really take full advantage of the data you collect. Wonderful!
What do you dislike about the product?
It's quite pricy: the free plan only tracks a few hundreds users per month, as you go up in traffic the costs go up almost exponentially. The product Personas, then, is apart (i.e., an extra cost, if you want it)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It makes adding analytics platforms or data warehouses extremely easy, saving a lot of time in coding, testing, debugging and offering consistent data throughout your ecosystem
Segment is the easiest way to streamlined Data/Analytics
What do you like best about the product?
Segment was amazingly easy to get setup and running. The same could be said for connecting different platforms directly to Segment and feeding data to those platforms.
Instead of writing many lines of code and ensuring each platform is receiving the data, all you have to do is connect Segment within your app. Segment then offers a very simply and easy to understand interface to toggle what data gets sent where. Less time implementing and more time analyzing the insights you need.

What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing, I think Segment is really great at what they offer. We haven't experienced this, but I could see the breadth of connections they offer being a dislike for companies that are already established with their preferred platforms. If that is the case then I would recommend investigating further.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As with any company, there are many different platforms in which certain tasks are completed. For us, we were able to connect our analytics platform (Amplitude), our CRM system (Customer.io), and a relational database (PGSQL).
We also can toggle data to go to different sources depending on which environment the app is (development or production).

Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a great platform that is not only super easy to implement, but saves so much time in directing data to the appropriate platforms.
I will also say that the pricing is very fair. The free tier allows you to get to a great place before you are having to pay to use their service!
Overall, there is very little risk as there is no cost to get started and takes less than 30 minutes to get started!

Great solution for tracking and integration needs
What do you like best about the product?
Web-based interface to configure integrations. This has saved our engineering team hundreds and perhaps even thousands of hours of configuration, integration and development of our tracking implementation and integration with third party libraries.
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost increases linearly as your monthly unique user increases.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tracking, third party integration, integration with data warehouses, PII data in tracking detection and alerts
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This provided us with an out of the box tracking solution for both our webapp and native mobile app. In addition, this made it easier for us to integrate with third party libraries (client javascript snippets) and to stream data to our data warehouse as well. Segment can handle both client side and server side integration for tracking.
Segment has been super useful for my job routine
What do you like best about the product?
I can have an excellent visualization of the events that are being sent, how they are organized, which destinations are linked to the sources. I think very intuitive add a new destination as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
The debugger is quite limited. I 'm a data scientist and use a lot of this feature to troubleshooting any new event and raw data sent over destinations but the amount of data show at debugger is small and my searches for some problem almost never retrieve good results.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The organization for sure. We have a portal that contains dozens of events and it is complex to keep everything mapped and organized. For this task, Segment is so much straightforward. Also, our BI team is small and Segment helped me with its intuitive interface since other people than me can add a destination, troubleshooting things and I can save time on it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a great orchestration tool. For sure you have to know in deep what sources you want to track and some development support is strongly necessary. However, the daily maintenance is much more easier
Simple and flexible to use
What do you like best about the product?
Simplicity of the API with very small amount of functions available, what makes it very easy start using. Good debugging experience, what allows to quickly check and fix the problems. Flexible API, what makes easy to override some default properties in the context.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes not complete documentation, so you have to try it out. Examples for that are some third parameters for the track, page calls where you can optionally put the context variable and override/extend some defaults. Big thanks to Scott O'Leary who helped a lot in exploring all these hidden parameters. Another example of not complete documentation is "user" and different functions like identify(not clear whether it overrides or keeps the user related information, so have to try out first), logout (haven't seen that it will flush and regenerate the anonymous id). No information in the spec about "ready" method which allows to wait until the library is initialized, had to explore the source code and check in the runtime available methods and how they work. No way to opt-out the tracking with the user of library, so developers have to implement this behaviour on their side, what forces to create some wrappers around the library.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tracking user specific data and events.
Main benefits are:
- easy to debug and understand what should be fixed there
- easy and fast to integrate
- good support from the Segment team
- good enough documentation

Easy to Implement and Great Customer Support
What do you like best about the product?
So far Segment has delivered on what they have promised - decreasing the amount of time necessary to integrate our infrastructure. They have been extremely accessible by our team and have given us everything we need to make our implementation a success.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface could use some help - it's not as intuitive as I'd like it to be.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're only just beginning and have only added a couple of sources and destinations, but we're using it to keep our CRM updated as events happen on our third party software systems. We are also using it to to keep our marketing software updated on customer interactions on our website. We haven't yet realized that but can already tell it's going to serve our needs perfectly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you have staff dedicated to implement. While Segment helps a lot with this, you'll get the most out of the product if you put time and effort into it.
Data instrumentation doesn'thave to be complex.
What do you like best about the product?
- Segment is easy to use, saves many engineering hours with their native integrations,
- Easily data distribution to many supported destinations and data warehouses.
- Has an incredible account management, customer success and support teams.
- Innovative products and roadmap supporting business partners vision.

What do you dislike about the product?
- Not that dislike but something for consideration, the development/test/production environments are merged into one workspace, this is complex as sources are not as clean as these could be.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Product Data collection and instrumentation.
- Product Data categorization, standardization and distribution.
- Product Data categorization, standardization and distribution.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is always important to consider the roadmap, where the company is going and investing. For us Segment has been a great partner and we have been able to support each other as we scale our programs.
Great for multiproduct companies
What do you like best about the product?
Not being a developer, its amazing to have the ability to quick set up new destinations and filters as you deply new business solutions on "the front". We track a ton of product data on it and send to our CRM's and product analytics tools to use their logic and since we are expanding our portfolio, Segment makes it easy to reduce friction on getting usage and health metrics/reports out of those tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
I believe we could have a more easy and accessible. It can be very expensive specially if you use for freemium products with long sales cycles. Also, at least on our plan, the support is very inexpressive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Centering all product events in one place, making CRM data up-to-date and in real time, using to create health and opportunities alerts on the CRM (based on product usage).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Segment does not have a pretty good support or documentation that is very comprehensive so if you do not have ANY developer on your team it might be hard at the start. But after a few months the system is pretty easy to use and straightforward on its features.
It is the cornerstone to move data between platforms
What do you like best about the product?
The ability to connect all the platforms that we use to sync the masterdata across platforms./
What do you dislike about the product?
It is really hard to figure out and i worked on implementing it with their team to understand it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Syncing data across platforms and make it easy for sales to have the relevant data at their fingertips
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Spend time with their onboarding team to make it easier to get started.
