State of the Art Engine

  • May 30, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Beautiful Graphics technology;
- User-friendly interface;
- Node based materials;
- Make projects without coding with blueprint;
- Particles effects creator;
What do you dislike about the product?
- The Front Axis (X) is a little troublesome for importing animated characters.
- C++ Language instead of C# may be better, but it´s also harder to find programmers to work with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- From an game artist perspective, I can do a lot of things without needing someone to code for me.
- It´s a very powerful portifolio tool, wich I can showcase very complex light setup, shaders and heavy materials.
- The Node based system for creating materials is simply brilliant and is something that is already familiar for an Artist.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
As for any engine, get familiar with the User Interface. If you are an 3d artist you will find it very easy to use compared to softwares like blender or maya.
Read the documentation, good practices may vary a lot for each engine. and you wil need to adapt.
Get a good computer! You can sure try to use it on a cheap machine, but it´s on the heavy graphics where this engine really stands out.

Unreal is simply an Un-real way to develop games.

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of making a beautiful game and the integration of a visual scripting system to help my designers get in engine and contribute more.
What do you dislike about the product?
The dislike is similar to the like because I see a lot of people that feel they can make games with how easy Unreal is to use but they don't often understand that this means you have to make better games.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are streamlining the development process for AR/VR experiences. Unreal provides a great way, with the HTC Vive, to develop new spaces and create game worlds.

Real-time rendering will be the next big thing in animatino

What do you like best about the product?
The interface is easy to use and you can do almost everything that is necessary for game design with just this software. probably the best part of this software is that everything can be done with relative ease and great speed.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is nothing wrong with the software itself, but I have found it hard to find answers online for anything that I am trying to do in the software.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With this software it offers live lighting and rendering reducing the amount of time need to create projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure that you understand UV layout for 3D modeling while working in Unreal. It will make your life way easier.

Keeps getting better

What do you like best about the product?
When I first started looking for a game engine it was very important for it to have it's source code open and available for the general public. Unfortunately at that time, it was not the case for Unreal Engine, so I had to go with a different open source solution, but the moment I got an email from Unreal saying that they're going open source and even better - free of charge, I immediately jumped ship. Besides it being one of the best-looking, powerful and optimized game engines out there, the value of the open source is often overlooked.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user interface (UI) seems to be a lagging behind, at times it feels that the choice of the layout, colors, icons etc is from an era long gone. This might seem like not much at first, but a solid interface and user experience gives a significant boost not only to productivity but to the way a user "feels" himself using this application. Although I'm pretty sure this is going to change relatively soon, as Epic Games seem to always be ahead of the others on most of the matters concerning game development and design as a whole.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Unreal Engine satisfies my every need in regards to my craving of game development, 2D, isometric, 3D, AAA-level graphics and shaders, you name it - it has it. If I ever stumble on a client with any needs of real-time or pre-rendered visualizations - Unreal Engine would be my first choice.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It might feel like an overkill for indie developers, especially those who enjoy creating 2D sidescrollers and wouldn't use most of the features provided by the Engine, I chose a different approach and in my opinion an overkill is 9/10 times works best, since for future, may be more serious projects, you have already gained a considerable amount of experience and knowledge about the engine. And yet again, having the engine open source not only opens the doors to a vast community of enthusiasts, but contributes to the general security, bug reports and fixes.

UE4 Improvements over UE3

  • May 18, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal Engine 4 improvements are plenty. Whether it be the way projects are build from a foundation with Blueprint presets like FPS game or 3rd person templates, or the way Files saving, working in Unreal Engine 4 instead of Unreal Engine 3 is a game changer. I can build a playable demo of my environment and envision what the final product will be like with very little programming it's all done in the backend in C++

Also for VR there is a lot of potential to get your vision accomplished.

In addition to all these features within the program, the community behind Epic's Unreal Engine has really taken off online with tutorials, and weekly Twitch streams showing community work and tutorials.
What do you dislike about the product?
File size is kind of large if you don't have the space for it. Also the system requirements might be a little steep for older PC's. The interface can be a little daunting at first compared to other game engines, but once you get going you can see all the potential in the software to really customize it to fit the way you want.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Instead of making Packages with UPK Files it is all done in one file format this time. The old Kismet system has been replaced by Blueprints visual scripting so that programming can be intuitive to pick up in a node based visual way. This can go both ways too, a programmer can code in a similar fashion especially with a C++ Background.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are coming from a background in older Unreal Versions, once you learn where everything is, and get used to the new way of doing things, you can upgrade your workflow.

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal is one of the standard tools in videogames creation and more recently shortfilm and realtime renderer.
What do you dislike about the product?
its free, is great, i cant dislike this software, and is one of the most amazing videogame engines in the industry.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
When i was using this, was for realtime render, and shader creation and testing 3d models
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Is free!! and is amazing, if you're looking for a free realtime renderer and videogame creation tool, you'll be amazed by the power of this engine

Wonderful Game creation tool

What do you like best about the product?
I like the quick clean engine for game design and the ability to quickly export and import files from other software, so I am able to make detailed models in programs better suited to that and import them into this program
What do you dislike about the product?
I would love to see the software better handle the updates more efficiently, but that may just be the price for the easy to use engine.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The UE4 engine has a lot of benefits for our group, because we model in Blender and the two work well together.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would highly recommend it for someone trying to make high resolution games with complex mechanics, but you should always find an engine that fits the type of game you are trying to create. I have loved UE4, and do recommend it for any skill level, you can start a beginner or be well versed with the many soft wares it accommodates both with ease.

Unreal Engine. Easy to learn. Hard to Master.

  • May 17, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal Engine has been one of the leading game development platforms for many many years; and with good reason. Unreal Engine is very intuitive and easy to use on the surface allowing for quick development of 3D worlds and basic FPS games, but allows you to dive under the hood with programming and create anything your mind can dream up. Unreal Engine is fast and efficient and has an insane amount of advanced features. The lighting and rendering features allow you to create amazing looking games, and the pipeline for bringing in game assets is a breeze. I would highly recommend it for professionals, but it is also a decent place for beginners to start.
What do you dislike about the product?
It can be overwhelming at times with a vast amount of options when you start to dive under the hood. Need a high level of programming knowledge to do a lot of more advanced work.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Amazing looking games and 3D environments with all the features that enable you to work efficiently. Tools for level design are top-notch.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unreal Engine is great for those doing Environment Design, but people wanted to create a game without a high level of programming knowledge will find it difficult to get started. For those people I recommend Unity.

Amazing game engine thats free to download and easy to use? Yes please!

  • May 16, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal Engine 4 is firstly an amazing update on the previous unreal engine 3. In terms of software and user friendliness. The GUI is both friendly and easily learnt, as well as the software coming with pre-made examples of some popular genres of games. Allowing animators, coders and asset designers to quickly import their work and see how it would work in these game genres without them having to find additional scripting/animations/assets to compliment their work. They also offer the software for free so anyone can download and try this piece of kit out for themselves before committing to any paid services.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the blueprint system is a great update on the older system that was in place during UE3 it still has its flaws. It is not the most accessible and the visual layout of it can be confusing to those who are familiar with other coding languages.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Its a commonly accepted and used software for video game development that a lot of other designers are familiar with. This allows for collaboration and work sharing from multiple teams to be done very easily.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Play some of the example levels it offers and check out the blueprints there. As well as looking on their user market, there are some great things on the market place.

    Graphic Design

it's a brilliant piece of software, but it needs Great computers to work on.

What do you like best about the product?
it's stunning graphics, and the performance it can give out of a suitable computer, having it's built-in VR support is really awesome, and building things with nice visual interface is a pleasant experience (talking about the BluePrints system for sure).
What do you dislike about the product?
however, the software have some problems here and there, it's shadows isn't perfect yet, and it has always some problems in it, sometimes I come across bugs and software crashes which I wish can be solved all at once.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm working mainly on the workflow between multiple programs to have the assets imported into unreal engine correctly, also, working on quixel suite 2 to have material created correctly, however I'm trying to reach the best quality possible.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Unreal Engine is headed in the right direction, actually the most awesome thing about it that the company (EPIC) is continuously improving the software and doing a lot of stuff and fixes regarding everything included in the program, I really appreciate their work and would support them for sure for their efforts.
