The best out there

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal engine is perfect for creating games in any genre, 2D or 3D. As an artist, It's really easy for me to work with Unreal Engine. I came from Source Engine and I was blown away by how great the work flow is. It is easy to understand and I can transfer my assets into the engine seamlessly and fast.

If you know a little bit of programming, you can create magic with Blueprints. I personally had no knowledge about coding but this was incredibly easy to work with. Probably the strongest tool in this engine.

Unreals particle editor Cascade a very advanced editor is really easy to work with. There are a great amount of parameters you can choose to create advanced particle systems. One of the best features is the GPU particle option. You can create visually stunning particles with a very minimal hit on fps.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unreal engine can get really complicated because it is really advantaged and powerful. I was so confused when I first switched to this engine. Learning it was a bit difficult but after I got the hang of it, things went smooth and seamlessly. You really need to dedicate a great time to start getting good results.

Sadly it works horribly on lower end pcs. You really do need a beast to make products with great visuals.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can now stream levels seamlessly instead of putting loading screens in between. The limits are almost non existent compared to the previous engine we used. We can also optimize our game easily with the in engine tools and get detailed reports. It solved almost all of our problems.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely try this. Unreal Engine is one of the best in the market right now. You can easily find documentation. and the forums are active. It's also free and open source!

New to Unreal - Early experiences

  • August 25, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Unreal is so far a great engine. I have far more experience with Unity but my latest project is using Unreal. The blueprints, which are similar in concept to Unity's prefabs, are very intuitive and easy to use and it doesn't take long to ramp up on how to use them. Unreal also has great tutorials and example projects and it's easy to find more online. Right "out of the box" Unreal offers a lot of nice visual tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
So far my dislikes are pretty minor and I suspect more to do with my lack of experience. Things like scaling objects at massive sizes and having them scale by set values instead of by percentages can be annoying (and I'm sure there's a way to change this but I haven't found out how yet). I've also run into some annoying bugs - mainly crashes when importing a large number of assets.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am mostly using Unreal to prototype gameplay software and build levels and will be using to build a final game.

Blueprints are fantastic! User interface not so much.

What do you like best about the product?
As a developer experienced in using the Unity engine, treading the water in Unreal Engine was not difficult and the syntax are similar. The Blueprint Script component is a great way of visualizing and organizing your running events. Being able to form a clear mental image of the pipelines in your game certainly makes developing easier.
What do you dislike about the product?
The marketplace is quite slow and tedious to maneuver in. There are very limited ways of searching for assets and free ones are especially difficult to find. As such, their available are not centralized and is spread all over the web in individual developer sites and blogs. The user interface lacks polish, the icons are not appealing, and the overall appearance needs to be streamlined. The menus falls short of consistency which results in a cluster of differentiating windows depending on the task you are doing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As a game developer, I need an open engine that supports multiple platform at the same time. It will need to tolerate a wide range of complexity in game development as well as an uncomplicated way of finding usable assets. Pricing should also not be an issue in the start-up stages of development and only charged when there is income.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Look for the availability of the assets you require and plan out the ones you will need to develop before locking into this engine. Consider the complexity of the game you are developing and decide if you need the features that Unreal Engine provides.

Great for personal or studio use

What do you like best about the product?
Hard to say, i like a lot about it, on a visual scale i'd say i prefer how well the lighting works or shading. on a developer scale i'd say the animation blending.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not a lot, i'd like a way to view on mobile or edit features on mobile, that would be nice.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Because it works so well with scale its taking away any indecision when deciding what engine to use on big or small projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do it, its the best most customizable and scalable engine i've used.

Unreal Engine is a strong gaming creation platform!

  • July 25, 2016

What do you like best about the product?
What I like best about the Unreal Engine, having used other software in the past, is it vast customer support. There are so many tutorials available for anyone to get started. Compared to other engines, it is easy to get started. It's great for making something basic, up to something extremely advanced!
What do you dislike about the product?
Navigation within Unreal can sometimes be cumbersome, but after you use it a while your muscle memory will kick in and it becomes second nature. I go back and forth from Maya frequently so the different styles of navigation throws me off frequently.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Helping make games, I work in the gaming industry, and we couldn't do what we need to do without it. It's the core of our workflow, and enables us to do what we do!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Pick up Unreal and try it for a while. Start slow and pace yourself, games are not made in a day!

VR development

What do you like best about the product?
The graphic power and visual beauty of the program. The interface is still one I am getting used to, since I am not used to Node based 3D development.
What do you dislike about the product?
As a VR designer, whenever there is a update for Unreal, most of the resources I use or Techniques I use to create VR simulations change. If you can have more of a consistent flow and plugin library for some of the VR features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Developing realistic simulations for the HTC Vive. Trying to create a simplier work flow from Cinema4D to Unreal and Unreal to VR headsets.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take it slow and watch tutorials explaining the main differences of the workflow of 3d Engine and 3d programs.

Unreal Engine

What do you like best about the product?
The Graphics are the best , easy to use and much developed form the Previous UDK kit, now I can put in assets and texture maps with ease and the real time render result is way better compared to Unity is what i feel, In unity I would have to tweak a few settings to reach the default visuals in Unreal engine. And default setting there for various Genres of games like racing, FPS etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have no clue regarding the Programming side in Unreal, but as I heard from my colleagues it isn't as open as Unity, A little tight on what we can Program and a little hard to tweak the engine.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating Games , Fast Prototyping for Visual Art if what to be displayed, I had to make a project for the oculus rift as in Virtual reality and this Engine really impressed my clients.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you want to get a good result on the visuals of your game without a lot of effort then I would suggest to opt for this engine

its really unreal

What do you like best about the product?
The lighting in this engine is awesome the best in the game industry. With the new redesign it's a lot easier to use. it take almost any 3d file and I've also used it for 2d projects. This program has the power to make bad art look good there is a little trouble working with code.
What do you dislike about the product?
Like i said working with code is a bit of trouble but over all it's not too bad. I wish the file size wasn't so big and and you need a powerfully computer to run this program. My computer isn't the best in the world and it's really chunky on mine. also the price to publish a game is a it much.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use this program to make games and rinder out 3d models. This program is really good with lighting, rendering, and making game prototypes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
if this is to much i to handle I Recommend using unity3D

State of the Art Engine

  • May 30, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Beautiful Graphics technology;
- User-friendly interface;
- Node based materials;
- Make projects without coding with blueprint;
- Particles effects creator;
What do you dislike about the product?
- The Front Axis (X) is a little troublesome for importing animated characters.
- C++ Language instead of C# may be better, but it´s also harder to find programmers to work with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- From an game artist perspective, I can do a lot of things without needing someone to code for me.
- It´s a very powerful portifolio tool, wich I can showcase very complex light setup, shaders and heavy materials.
- The Node based system for creating materials is simply brilliant and is something that is already familiar for an Artist.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
As for any engine, get familiar with the User Interface. If you are an 3d artist you will find it very easy to use compared to softwares like blender or maya.
Read the documentation, good practices may vary a lot for each engine. and you wil need to adapt.
Get a good computer! You can sure try to use it on a cheap machine, but it´s on the heavy graphics where this engine really stands out.

Unreal is simply an Un-real way to develop games.

  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of making a beautiful game and the integration of a visual scripting system to help my designers get in engine and contribute more.
What do you dislike about the product?
The dislike is similar to the like because I see a lot of people that feel they can make games with how easy Unreal is to use but they don't often understand that this means you have to make better games.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are streamlining the development process for AR/VR experiences. Unreal provides a great way, with the HTC Vive, to develop new spaces and create game worlds.
