Simple, secure and auditable server acess

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's effortless to use. I am able to give access to remote desktops or other applications to end users who might not be so technically inclined. It works with pretty much everything I would want to secure, databases, ssh, remote desktops - I can monitor everyone's access to everything. Bringing on contracted developers or administrators is much easier knowing that everything they do is recorded and they only have access to what they need.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are a lot of moving parts. Set up on anything but Kubernetes is a chore if you want it on your own hardware. I would love to have a docker stack I can deploy for testing or smaller installations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows users access to all our infrastructure without having to install multiple VPNs or other software. Management is simple and centralised in the teleport software. The skill level to use teleport is also very low, so anyone in a company can use it.

What do you like best about the product?
Setting up groups and user permissions to access our Kubernetes services is simple and intuitive, without any internal documentation.
What do you dislike about the product?
Setting up teleport to work with all systems within AWS is not simple, requiring reading and implementing multiple services without a quick bootstrapped solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Teleport solves the issue of authenticating developers and administrators to or a multitude of Kubernetes clusters. We can set up team permissions for individual services, or administrator access for others

Teleport has upgraded our security

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Our organization greatly values the simplicity and effectiveness of Teleport's authentication and authorization system with RBAC, which seamlessly manages access to both our cloud and on-premises resources. Deploying Teleport on Kubernetes using the official helm chart is effortless, and the same can be said for setting up agents on both Kubernetes and regular Linux machines. The guided setup for resources like RDS is truly outstanding, simplifying the process even further. In short, Teleport makes everything remarkably easy.

One of the standout features we appreciate is the access to audit logs and the ability to control access to internal systems, particularly databases, without the need to modify firewalls or security groups. The user experience is fantastic, especially when utilizing Teleport Connect. It eliminates the complexities of generating and securing SSH keys, as well as the hassle of setting up a tunnel through a bastion host every time a business user wants to connect to internal resources.

Additionally, Teleport impresses us with the frequency of meaningful updates, demonstrating the Teleport team's commitment to staying on top of security concerns associated with such a platform. We also find it commendable that the Teleport web UI promptly notifies us when a new version is available, ensuring that we are aware of essential security updates.
What do you dislike about the product?
The YAML files can be tricky to maintain as they become verbose for all user groups. We did some custom automation but wished Teleport would have something in-house.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Teleport assists in achieving compliance and enhances control over break-glass scenarios. The recording and auditing capabilities provided by Teleport are valuable not only for investigations but also for troubleshooting complex issues. Short-lived certificates offered by Teleport eliminate the need for passwords in most cases.

Teleport is the pragmatic access management solution

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Self Hosted
Support for a large array of endpoints (PostgreSQL, Oracle, Mongo, Redis, cloud or self hosted ones, Applications, Windows VMs, Linux boxes, K8S, MacOS, etc.)
Ready to Go in 10 minutes
Session Recording, Audit Logs, "Over The Shoulder" feature for access, to supervise the occasional access
Extremely flexible user/role management
Nothing major locked behind the Enterprise version
What do you dislike about the product?
The project is moving fast, so sometimes documentation might not be up to date, luckily it's easy enough for any tech person to figure it out, or contact the support fellows.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed a PAM solution that can be implemented very fast to cover some gaps, Teleport fits in that gap nicely, providing all the functionality we need in terms of user provisioning, access management and passwordless authentication. Users can now use tsh to login to servers they're authorized, we have logging of session and actions, all that and more for the price of nothing!

Teleport: Streamlining Secure Access for Modern Infrastructure

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best functionality of Teleport summarised as;

Simplified Access Management: Teleport helps users replace the complexity of managing multiple passwords, keys, and tokens with short-lived SSH and X.509 certificates. This simplification can enhance security and ease the burden of access management tasks.

Centralized Access Control: With Teleport, users can have a single access point and SSO provider for various infrastructure resources, including SSH servers, Kubernetes clusters, databases, and more. This centralized approach improves convenience, visibility, and security.

Flexible Policy Management: Teleport allows users to define access policies using familiar tools like Terraform or Kubernetes resources. This flexibility enables them to define fine-grained access rules across different environments, clouds, and protocols, making it easier to enforce security and compliance requirements.

Session Recording: The session recording feature of Teleport is highly valued for auditing, compliance, and troubleshooting purposes. Users can record sessions across various protocols and review them later, providing valuable insights into system activities and enhancing accountability.

Mutual TLS Tunnels: Teleport offers mutual TLS tunnels to protect infrastructure endpoints, ensuring secure communication between clients and servers. This encryption helps safeguard sensitive data and mitigate the risk of unauthorized access.
What do you dislike about the product?
The concerns felt about when using Teleport:

Initial Setup Complexity: Configuring and setting up Teleport may require some technical expertise and familiarity with the infrastructure components it interacts with. Users who are new to Teleport or have limited experience in managing access control systems might find the initial setup process a bit complex.

Learning Curve: Teleport offers a wide range of features and capabilities, which can result in a learning curve for new users. Understanding and effectively utilizing all the functionalities may require some time and effort.

Integration Challenges: Integrating Teleport with existing infrastructure components and tools may present some challenges. Ensuring smooth integration and compatibility with different environments, protocols, and applications might require additional configuration and troubleshooting.

Limited Protocol Support: While Teleport supports several protocols, users might find that it doesn't cover all the specific protocols they need for their infrastructure. If users rely heavily on protocols that are not supported by Teleport, it could limit their ability to fully leverage its benefits.

Performance Considerations: Depending on the scale and complexity of the infrastructure, some users may experience performance considerations when using Teleport. This can include potential latency or overhead introduced by the proxy, especially in large-scale deployments.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mainly Auditing and Compliance: Teleport offers session recording capabilities, allowing you to record and review SSH sessions, database queries, Windows desktop sessions, and more. This feature is valuable for auditing, compliance, and troubleshooting purposes, providing a detailed trail of activities and Flexible Policy Management: Teleport enables you to define access policies using familiar tools like Terraform or Kubernetes resources. This allows you to write policies once and apply them consistently across different clouds, environments, and protocols, ensuring compliance and enforcing security best practices.

Teleport

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Very easy to set up and use, easy to share device access and permissions with colleagues. Easiest way we have found to enable secure and compliant access to devices on customer sites.
What do you dislike about the product?
Updating to a newer version seems to come with the risk of orphaning devices in the field.

We are having issues on one machine where it continually asks for the user to log in. This seems to have been down to the method of installation (via apt)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use teleport to securely access devices and applications deployed on customer sites, through reverse SSH tunnels and the application interface. We are now also starting to look at using the database connectors

Comprehensive authentication and access control solution with some administrative challenges

  • June 06, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Teleport is a well-rounded solution, with specific high points in the number and type of resources it can manage, the product's scalability, the vast number of plugins it can use for user access control, and the product's modularity.

The CLI experience is fantastic, and the UI - including the http server, the access control rules, and the simple configuration files, make the initial setup simple.
What do you dislike about the product?
When using the on-prem solution - which is ideal from an end compliance perspective - It works best when you have a team with a dedicated resource or resources to manage the teleport infrastructure and user access. While this is well documented, the solution's modularity means it's also a bit complicated to get up and running. Maintenance requires someone at least familiar with the product, and there's a steep learning curve.

The OSS product has also gotten less powerful as Teleport has reduced its scope to add more value to the enterprise product. This is understandable, but my team has slowly reduced our Teleport footprint as we don't want to invest the money in the enterprise solution for small-scale solutions more efficiently served by in-house solutions or VPN based access control.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Teleport to restrict and manage access to internal resources in our cloud product with easy and scalable provisioning for automated deployment. The included audit log and CLI access mean we don't need a secondary auditing solution.
