An open-source analytics and monitoring platform that excels in flexible data visualization and diverse data source integration, but may require improvement in automating daily reports

  • November 08, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use it internally to monitor both hardware and virtual machines running on our servers and then generate reports based on the monitoring data.

What is most valuable?

One standout feature is its open-source nature. It excels in providing comprehensive details when there are downtimes or fluctuations, offering thorough reports. From a cost perspective, it stands out positively, especially when compared to other tools, given its robust functionality as an open-source solution.

What needs improvement?

There is a need for improvement in automating daily monitoring reports, especially when alerts are triggered due to system downtimes or fluctuations. This enhancement would make the monitoring tool more efficient and streamlined. While it does produce reports, the quality might not be optimal.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have approximately two years of experience working with it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I haven't encountered any issues or bugs while using it, and it has been stable throughout.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Numerous users, ranging from five hundred to a maximum of three hundred, frequently engage in upscaling and downscaling activities. The system handles this well, and the performance remains stable, even when multiple users log in and out simultaneously.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not overly complicated nor excessively straightforward. It's a manageable process that involves following a step-by-step approach.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It's free of cost; it operates as an open-source tool.

What other advice do I have?

It is recommended for use, and in parallel, WebEx is another open-source tool. Both are straightforward to deploy on a Linux server. The process is simple and similar to each other, and there's no need for any complex procedures. Deploying these monitoring tools on a Linux server is hassle-free. Overall, I would rate it eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Grafana Labs helps visualize Kubernetes metrics

  • November 01, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I loved that Grafana had custom created dashboards that we could save and recreate with the Grafana API. It was easy to implement.
What do you dislike about the product?
Modifying the grafana.ini file to bypass user login in an embedded dashboard was difficult, and debugging was difficult.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Grafana creates very pretty dashboards for the metrics that we scraped. It saved us a lot of time.

Grafana - graphs for performance analysis

  • October 20, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
1. Supports different data sources like Prometheus, MySQL, InfluxDB etc.
2. Zoom in, zoom out and date range filtering applies to all the panels present in the dashboard, which helps in comparative analysis.
3. Different types of graphs like Gauge chart, Pi chart, Bar chart, line chart etc with interactive user interface is very useful.
4. Interpreting huge amount of data on garphs is made easy with different colours and tool tips.
What do you dislike about the product?
Integrating with data sources that involves configuring data sources and connectors can be complex and time-consuming for non-technical person.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I work in a networking company, visualizing the performance of different components is very vital for easy detection of any problems in the network. So we have KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which help in understanding components. Along with Prometheus time series database, we use Grafana for displaying KPIs over a time period.

Grafana - The All-rounder for monitoring metrics, logging and alerting

  • September 20, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We're using Grafana for real-time monitoring metrics, alerting, and logging. For monitoring, we've integrated it with Prometheus, and for logging, we've integrated it with Loki and Promtail. Apart from this, we're looking to explore it as an APM at the moment.
What do you dislike about the product?
Difficult to create a custom dashboard.
Better UI is needed for Loki logs. Real-time logs are still a challenge.
Different data sources cannot be used in the same graph at the same time, causing a visual comparison of the data to be difficult.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're using node-exporter, cadvisor, mongo-exporter, mysql-exporter, pm2 exporter and nginx exporter to send data to prometheus and plot graphs on grafana for real-time monitoring. Pretty helpful to debug and provide RCA for any incidents that occur.
Getting application logs using the loki docker plugin and getting logs on Grafana on a container-level.
We hope to implement grafana tempo soon.

Good dashboard features and provides excellent customization

  • August 30, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case is the dashboard. For example, we have screens created in the last step, and we integrate Grafana with that so that we can see the dashboards with the data. What does the traffic look like? What do the errors look like? So the is our main use case.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable aspect is customization. There are many customizations possible, so I like that.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in terms of stability.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Grafana for more than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I would rate the stability an eight out of ten because sometimes I find issues with Grafana. For example, I am unable to open some services there. Then, we have to open ten different tabs to get it fixed. And it's annoying when there's something going on we want to check Grafana, and it throws four different errors.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have never had any issues with scalability.

Everyone in our organization uses this solution. So, we have over 10,000 end users.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. You simply see what you want to do. You want to add a row. You want to add a panel. So it's easy for me to set it up.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

The visualization dashboard is easy to use and includes a wide range of display options. You can change parameters very quickly to converge on the display you want.
What do you dislike about the product?
You are somewhat bound by the connectors provided and the completeness of their implementation. But this was not a serious problem for my implementation. Be that you know how to use your chosen connector.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to display operating data from our IoT solution.
