    Information Technology and Services

Approachable UI for non-technical users, but somewhat limited in client event schema flexibility

  • August 26, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The cloud-based architecture is great for non-technical people--no local drivers or software required to start viewing or creating dashboards and it's easy to share and collaborate with others.
What do you dislike about the product?
Amplitude requires almost perfect forward clairvoyance. Without knowing exactly which event properties you want to transform and how you will use them so you can implement them in your product's client events, I feel more drawn to a data warehouse querying interface than Amplitude. Since I can't self-service these transformations, I have to ask our engineering team to explicitly send the results of a transformation (adding eng time cost and taking up event space within Amplitude) or ask for something custom, which are both not ideal alternatives.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Amplitude helps us quickly see product usage metrics without needing to set up complex data pipelines. We really enjoy the integrated data platform that includes both ingestion and processing, as well as the lightweight and opinionated visualizations and analyses that are easy to set up in Amplitude.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for an easy, well-structured product and behavioral analytics platform, Amplitude is an excellent choice. However, be aware that Amplitude cannot replace the full spectrum of data needs at a growing technology company, namely data warehousing and querying.

Amplitude has come so far!

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to quickly spin up a chart to answer a question I have, is easier than ever. Also, the new Data Governance tools give product analytics folks the ability to finally take control of data governance, which is far more important than most folks realize. I love that I can rename event names or property values on the fly. It makes the eng/dev process much faster so I don't always need to get engineering to change the values on the backend. Furthermore A/B Significance monitors are a great touch within the funnel tool.
What do you dislike about the product?
Session level analytics NEEDS to be here. If amplitude wants to be the centralized location for analytics teams, this is a must. I want to be able to understand my user acquisition funnels alongside my in-app/site analytics. "Users who come from Organic Search typically go onto consume X-amount of content and create Y-number of posts..." This is invaluable data. I don't like have to switch between GA and Amplitude to guess this.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mainly focused on supporting our product team monitor new feature growth. Really enjoy AB significance monitoring with the funnel view. We've been able to quickly iterate on features that are performing poorly and turn them to success stories (such as our New Desktop Post Page).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're new to the platform -- start with your Product team and teach them how to use it to make decisions -- Others will want it. But get product EXCELLENT at using it before trying to serve ALL team members at once.

Amplitude = Efficiency!

What do you like best about the product?
Amplitude makes getting super quick insights on user behaviors so easy! I can be more confident in making product decisions and prioritizing bugs.
What do you dislike about the product?
The need to involve external teams and engineering resources to develop new events and/or properties. It becomes challenging to prioritize the dev work amongst all the other features we are working on.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Making product decisions and reviewing user behaviors.

Amplitude for fraud analytics

What do you like best about the product?
Pathfinder and real time event tracking - really nice for testing on my own device
What do you dislike about the product?
There is almost too much information/too many options that it makes it overwhelming
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Identifying gaps in enrollment flows and identifying suspicious users. I have been able to use the pathfinder to see where the majority of "good" users go.

Funnel conversion for marketing campaigns.

Lots of features, need time to understand

What do you like best about the product?
Setting up new charts is easy.

The query-like UI to create new charts (we use funnel analysis quite heavily) makes it simple to target what we need when it comes to creating event data sequences. It takes a matter of minutes for us to set up a new funnel analysis to monitor how users are using new parts of our application flow.

Coming from a Google Analytics background, Amplitude gives way more degrees of granularity and configuration when it comes to implementing your user journey analysis (a.k.a funnel analysis).
What do you dislike about the product?
More recently, i found the need to save charts and partially completed parts of a dashboard.
A nice to have would be a bookmarked charts area so that it's easier for my team to collaborate on building charts together.

I see that we have that already for dashboards.

It's great that I can search for dashboards by team space, but for other areas such as cohorts, I find it odd that I can't filter them by team space. Seems like a missed opportunity here. As an example, our company has over 500 staff that interact with Amplitude. Although not every staff member would create their own cohort, it still remains hard to look for the cohorts my team cares about.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main goal of our team is to create a self serve onboarding experience for our product so that users can get started sooner without needing human assistance.

We are trying to understand where the largest drop-off points are in task completion and what interactions the users have done leading up to completing said tasks.

Amplitude has helped us easily create these journey visualizations and in doing so, we were able to quickly iterate on our flows and test our new hypothesis around why we believe a certain UI flow is working vs another.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Amplitude is as easy or as difficult to use as you want it to be. The WYSIWYG-style approach makes it easy to get into learning how to query for data without the knowledge prerequisite of having to know SQL upfront. As you start to get more comfortable with using Amplitude, you'll start to see how you and your team can increase the level of granularity and precision in the questions you care about.

As an example, in the beginning, you may ask "how many users view our page?".
Down the road, you may ask "where are users coming from in order to view this page? and where are they going after?"

Amplitude is pretty useful to understand how customers are engaging with our product

What do you like best about the product?
Getting insights into customer usage data
What do you dislike about the product?
Think the UI is a bit clunky and confusing. It's not often very straightforward how to gather a specific insight about your customer's usage of the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are finding out how are customers are actually using the product differently than we had initially envisioned
