Matterport review

  • September 10, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
You can go and survey a space and bring it back to the office for more than one person to look at and saves driving back to a site if you missed something in a traditional photo. You can also measure quite accurately
What do you dislike about the product?
You cannot download the files. They are hosted on matterports servers which you pay for per item and monthly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Surveying, measuring when not on site and in office discussions of the spaces.

Overpriced & Highly Questionable as a "Business Opportunity"

  • June 21, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Great seamless system & visual product. Matterport interface is easy to use and provides a good user experience. Great options to tag virtual spaces and functionality to drop in media links.
What do you dislike about the product?
1.Not a great opportunity for the "service provider." A service provider's interests are not really aligned with Matterport, since the service provider wants to keep ongoing customers while Matterport is more interested in selling another camera and hosting plan to the customers of service providers. Matterport essentially uses the service provider as an advertisement for their system, and smatters spaces with their logo linked to their site trying to sell the system. This is not a true "White Label" sytem. This devalues the product in my opinion. Furthermore, past stunts from Matterport include advertising lowball service provider rates. (They did stop this at least) and while I can't verify this, some service providers report that Matterport actually had sales people reach out to their clients and try to sell them cameras.

2. Expensive Data "Hostage" System - You don't own the data you capture, rather Matterport does. As long as you own the camera and want to use it, you will be stuck in Matterport's system and forced to fork out for expensive payment plans whilst at the mercy of whatever they decide to do. Matterport retains absolute autonomy and has recently raised the cost of their hosting plans. If you like the feeling of having control over your data & expenses, Matterport will be a bad choice in my opinion. Furthermore as I got into Matterport to document construction sites & MEC systems, I quickly realized this lack of autonomy was also a problem for clients who need to "own" the data, particularly government agencies who have security concerns as well.

3. Market Demand & Disruptive Technology - Matterport is very expensive IMO and they as a company overestimate the value it delivers. While it is truly a great product, the upfront and ongoing expense seems disproportionate to the value it brings. Furthermore cheaper and disruptive tech is always hitting the market, making this very questionable for someone viewing this as a business opportunity.

SUMMARY: For me and my use cases, I really disliked feeling "hostage" to their system, and I didn't feel the market valued the product enough to make it worth it becoming a significant part of my business. I was honestly relieved to sell the camera. Furthermore the risk is you will spend alot of money on this, get "locked" into the system, only to discover a competitor has developed a more cost effective system that gives the user more autonomy. So for me Matterport really just overvalues itself in light of the risks, lack of control, and expenses to the service provider.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Capturing spaces in 3D for "virtual" viewing. Provides a detailed virtual capture system that is seamless with a collaborative interface.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is the review I wish i'd seen before I blew my money on Matterport as a service provider. Its a great system and may work for the right business. I really recommend you question it though, and if you are willing for the committment of building a library of data that "traps" you into the system.

Easy software, incredible & effective results

  • February 24, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The software makes it very easy to plan out a route for the 3D tour and choose all the options that you could think of. It really lets your clients get a feel for the house much better than looking at photos. The houses for which we use Matterport also sell quicker than the ones with just regular photos. It’s so easy and the results are so great!
What do you dislike about the product?
The price of the camera is the only thing that seems a bit off. It is very expensive and there seem to be 360° cameras popping up on shelves that are much cheaper. However, Matterport does have 3D features and those cameras don’t, so I suppose that’s a big factor.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have realized that clients want to actually feel like they are walking through the house so they can understand the layout and size and envision what it would look like if they lived there. Normal photos come nowhere close to a 3D tour on Matterport, and clients who watch the tours are already familiar with the house before meeting a realtor in person, which usually means that they are more likely to make an offer. With that being said, houses that we use Matterport for have sold reasonably quicker than those that we didn’t use it on. It really is a game changer.

What do you dislike about the product?
Labor/Time intensive and best to be hired out.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Provides a 3D image and tour to potential buyers in real estate.

I would recommend hiring someone who will do the Matterport tours for you. I found it to be labor intensive and a bit time consuming for the busy agent.

Great Tools, great quality but closed system and ongoing expensive hosting

  • December 14, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Awesome quality of the camera, great support who answers questions very fast in minutes wich is simply great. Matterport has all important aspects one might need in order to do great VR Tours even in 3d.
What do you dislike about the product?
The problem with matterport is that you have to use their cloud to process the tours as well as host the tours. At the beginning this is quite ok. But after a few months paying for the webhosting becomes very annoying. If you act as an agency as we do - you would have to sell the VR Tour webhosting to your customers as well. From our experience not to many smaller clients are willing to pay on a monthly basis for webhosting JUST for VR / 360 Tours. So main point is the costs for ongoing usage of the service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The camera is just amazing. Nothing really to say about that. Love the smoothness of the solution itself. They have thought about everything. Our Business did produce great virtual tours with their solutions.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Matterport is great if you want high quality product and ease of use. If your clients though don't want to pay for VR Webhosting their closed cloud environment can be a real issue.

What do you dislike about the product?
It doesn't always flow so smoothly, if youre not careful with the mouse, youre all over the place.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A lot of people are out of town, allows to schedule tours when not even in the same city.

Amazing operability and features

  • December 14, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
i like how easy the app is to use and how realistic the overall experience is. its a seamless process and can portray a real life experience to anyone that is not present in a conditioned space. i really love how you can go from birds eye view to inside the space without a hefty process. just click on plan vs 3d and youre set.
What do you dislike about the product?
i honestly dont have any dislikes. I think its great and i wish more people were using it. its an amazing tool to show real spaces to clients. maybe a slight dislike is the amount of gaps that scans sometimes leave behind, but im sure thats user error.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
clients dont know what to expect from a 2d image, so showing them the space with the sense of walking in reality, gives them a true understanding of what a space looks like or is supposed to look like.

Great for high end homes

  • December 14, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I'm in the real estate and staging business and pictures are critical for my line. This I believe is the new way of doing real estate. It works perfectly those buyers that can't walk thru the home personally.
What do you dislike about the product?
This isn't the best for those viewing the homes on a cell phone. Not very friendly and takes forever to load
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Matterport helps us reach out to those buyers that can't walk thru the home. It allows buyers to digitally walk through a home and fall in love. Great for properties that have strange layouts or are large

Best solution for 3D or VR virtual visit

  • December 14, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Matterport offers a very effective and easy to use solution. The firm offers its customers to make three-dimensional scans of properties and then share them via the cloud. It's awesome.
The benefits of Matterport are huge. First of all, virtual tours in 3D offer an experience close to reality. With Matterport's interactive 3D scans, virtual visitors really have the impression of being physically present in their future property, which is much more qualitative and attractive than a 2D plan. According to the company, the use of the virtual visit Matterport increases the commitment of the public and potential customers by 300%. 3D tours create a strong emotional connection between the visitor and their future property.
What do you dislike about the product?
The files are proprietary, so we are "locked" with the solution. Matterport is not very reagent in terms of VR headset compatibility.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In consulting agency. Matterport helps to better document projects based on 3D scans. In the field of hospitality and tourism, it is possible to offer virtual tours of hotels and other rentals to attract customers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Google has invested in the company, it's reassuring.
