Great Fit for Smaller Dev Team

  • February 15, 2022

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler has largely solved the "sharing secrets" problem for us, particularly for local development. We use it locally, in K8s, across AWS (mostly via SSM integration), and have started using it with GitHub Actions for builds.
What do you dislike about the product?
The one "missing" feature is peer review. I say "missing" only in that the hand-rolled solution I migrated us from into Doppler was git + ejson based, and all configuration changes came by-way-of pull request which helped catch silly mistakes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Sharing secrets for local development
- Enabling application teams to have more control over their deployments (our DevOps team helps initial setup, then app devs have the Doppler UI for making tweaks/changes)
- Configuration visibility (similar point as above, but having a single location for env vars definitely makes them easier to find)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For sharing secrets to local development, Doppler is second to none and has been a godsend.

For integrating with deployed environments, Doppler has a LOT going for it to help you integrate it (number of pre-canned integrations and documentation otherwise, decent web-based management UI), but may involve changing your process to account for secrets and env vars being managed outside of the typical SDLC. This is still a curve we're climbing, and has been difficult as a GitOps shop, but has been worth the extra friction.

An absolute must for working with tech projects.

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler has become a staple in my workflow, and my projects have ever since been deployed with ease.
I often used environment files and considered switching to a more (likely expensive) option for storing variables. However, after consulting with some friends and reading some articles, I was thrilled to find Doppler offering all the features I need for free!
The team who work on this service does a fantastic job, and I wish more services could be like them.
What do you dislike about the product?
As far as I am aware, and for what I used it for, there isn't much to say that I dislike. All of the features work, and there are plenty of use cases that I can see people using this service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Doppler to serve environment variables to my projects, and ever since I switched from another method of storing them, I can finally have peace of mind with my secrets, knowing that they are safe.

Easiest way to handle secrets at scale

What do you like best about the product?
Leading a dev team handling secret management is really complicated. Ensuring peoples values stay up to date while also having a way to sync values to production is even harder. Doppler solves all of that allowing us to have each dev have their own branch of secrets while developing locally, and then having a streamlined way to find missing keys before production.

The team is also phenomenal, super responsive and working hard to make the product better.
What do you dislike about the product?
The product is definitely still young. Would love a better way to handle permissions around modifying secrets, but these are things the team is actively working on. So really nothing major
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Keeping secrets up to date locally while in development, onboarding devs and then ensuring secrets are in production.

Does what it says it will, and more

What do you like best about the product?
As promised, Doppler really does simplify management of environment variables and makes collaboration across our engineering team significantly easier.
What do you dislike about the product?
Certain local environment variables are still necessary—though Doppler has ways to handle this, we've found ourselves continuing to use some on rare occasion.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Secure and convenient management of certain secrets and environment variables. It really does make things simpler and more consistent—we haven't had to think about this problem since.

Made key management a breeze

What do you like best about the product?
What gives me value:
- Support for different environments - dev, stg, prd
- Support for per user key variants
- Native integration with Heroku and Vercel
- Beautiful interface

I couldn't really find a good alternative when I was on the market and am very happy with Doppler.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing major. Copying/pasting/searching for keys across different environments could be improved. We have over 50 keys and it gets messy.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Before Doppler, I onboarded every engineer with a text file with keys for their dev environment. There was no standardization. If one person added a new feature that required a new env variable, everyone had to update their local copy.
After Doppler, everything is automatically synced and it's super easy to onboard new engineers.
