Jamf Pro - Deserved Market Leader

  • October 05, 2020
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Jamf Pro is the market leading Mobile Device Manager (MDM) for Apple devices. It has all the features needed for enterprise level device configuration and control. The Web GUI is excellent; functional yet easy to use. I love the API for automating parts of the system and integrating with other tools.

Jamf also pride themselves on zero-day support, when a new version of any Apple OS is released Jamf supports it that day.

I've also found their tech support to be both speedy and effective. They're a good company to deal with.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some parts of the GUI could do with a better look at filtering and ordering of objects on the screen.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Jamf Pro allows us to build a system that gives us zero-touch deployment of Macs. We can have them shipped straight to the staff member and when they plug in their Mac and connect it to WiFi it gets configured and the apps required by that user are downloaded without IT doing a thing. That's so convenient for both us and our users.

Jamf Pro allows us to configure a secure and usable system for our Mac fleet.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give one or two others a look before you look at Jamf Pro and you will see how it just seems to do a better job and have a better feature set.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Jamf Pro has helped with iOS management for our school as well as macOS and tvOS. We keep our hands off the devices and can support our teams and students without face to face interactions.

There are mdm solutions out there, if you can choose JAMF, you should

  • October 02, 2020

What do you like best about the product?
It's flexibility. This is largely due to it's ability to leverage scripting to implement custom solutions to satisfy organizational needs. It's also very reliable due to the many ways that it can trigger policies that target your fleet. Not to mention, jamfnation forums are a huge help, not only to JAMF users, but to anyone managing macs. It has saved me from headaches many times over.

All said, if you want as close to an all-in-one solution as you can get, and not deal with open source, I'd choose Jamf Pro.
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost of JAMF may prevent some organizations from choosing it as their mdm solution. However, because it is so good at what it does cost savings may actually exist elsewhere. At minimum, you will sleep better at night.

That said, It doesn't come without it's faults. Reporting could be improved. Some people even have used other tools like munkireport to supplement what it can do.Managing multiple printers in large environments could also be improved. Took me a while to get all of our printer policies in line with ~200 printers. I would also say this is partly a general mac-management issue and not strictly a Jamf issue. However, Jamf could make it easier on the admins that use it with the ability to clone and modify ALL aspects of the policy xml file using the api.

I've been priced out of Jamf before because of cost of it and had to look elsewhere. Many open source solutions are available that can be paired together to create a functional management suite. These would come with a higher technical barrier to entry, and would add more complexity all while sacrificing the kind of flexibility that JAMF natively brings. I know that if education pricing wasn't a thing, this is where I would be now. I also realize that any business of a decent size should be able to justify the cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I work in a 90/10 (pc to mac) environment with roughly 4000 computers. Macs were the wild west until we tried to reign them in and add order (bring macs under the same level of management and control as our pc's). I can't imagine doing that well with some of the other mdm's. I'm saying that after trying to do it with Airwatch and open source solutions first.

We use Jamf for custom fixes for our techs that are made available in Self Service. We manage our printers. We do simple things that have big effects like restricting new OS upgrades when they come out because that can really break things (cough...loss of 32-bit app support in Catalina). Imaging has been completely replaced with a (close to) zero-touch DEP workflow. We keep track of our filevault keys. We use PPPC to create profiles that allow necessary organizational apps to function by enforcing the privacy settings they need at the OS level. We've used it to deploy, and configure, NoMAD, and then the Apple Kerberors extension after that to fix AD authentication and password synchronization issues. The list goes on...
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Jamf makes a great product. If you are a larger organization it's worth the investment in having a mdm solution that was built with the mac in mind and can scale well. If you are a smaller or medium sized business, determine what all you need an mdm to do, and think of the people you will have as administrators. If that person is only a part time administrator, or if you only need to push some app store apps and basic config profiles, one of the lighter Jamf products may be a better fit. There are also other mdm solutions that can meet those same functions while integrating with DEP (simpleMDM, mosyle, fleetsmith, etc)
