Solution simplifies web service testing with impressive speed and accessibility

  • January 10, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use it to check web services. For instance, I can send a request and receive a response. My company, which is in the insurance industry, uses it as well.

What is most valuable?

It is very easy for me to use and I highly prefer it compared to SoapUI and other products for performing its job. It is more handy and faster. It has impacted us very nicely.

Postman is used for free by us. I'm not sure if there might be a paid version for multiple users. It is a very good product used for development. It is easy to install, as well as to learn, particularly for new users, even if they are not developers. I taught my business analyst to use it. I just showed them once, and it was easy for them to understand.

For example, I gave them the URL and request format and asked them to test independently. They were able to use it on their own and do their testing as well. It was a good experience, especially for generally smart people, like those we usually hire in our company. It is pretty easy to explain, and learning it is not complex.

What needs improvement?

It is really good. I don't think there is any need for comments on improvements. It is super.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used the solution for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate it ten out of ten for stability. It is a good product. It is a very good product.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This solution is scalable. It can be scaled. Maybe, as mentioned, an automation feature would be beneficial. However, it is good in its own right. If it is changed, it might lose its purpose.

How are customer service and support?

It is a good thing that it was never needed. It is not needed. That is the best part. They might be there, but it is so good that you don't really need them.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I didn't really use it. I was the manager of the team, so I am not sure if it even has a collaboration feature. Maybe it can have a collaboration feature if it doesn't.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is very straightforward. It can be downloaded directly from the browser. It gets installed immediately. It is a good tool and doesn't even need to be installed; it can be used directly from the browser. It is good.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have used Eclipse, Eclipse Duo, and all their versions, as well as Microsoft Azure or Visual Studio. I have used many tools actually.

The main difference is that it can also be used in the browser. It doesn't need to be installed always. Or even if it is, it is very easy to install. You just search for Postman, click download, and you start working on it.

Maybe there is a workspace requirement if your company needs it, however, that is also easy to manage. The main advantage is that getting started is quick and doesn't require going through a lot of documentation. It is pretty self-explanatory.

What other advice do I have?

If I have the use case to use it, like testing web services, it is the best tool out there. If I am developing any application, I should definitely use it because it is very easy. Also, in dark mode, it looks really cool. The dashboard looks cool in dark mode.

Overall rating: Ten out of ten.

Centralized collections improve collaboration with remote login capabilities and helpful support

  • December 26, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case for Postman is mostly for unit testing of the APIs. Additionally, I have developed scripts for end-to-end testing of the APIs.

What is most valuable?

One of the biggest advantages of Postman is its user-base approach. All collections created in Postman are not maintained locally and are instead maintained on the server, making it easy for me to continue work from anywhere if I log in with the same credentials. Any team member can continue the work as nothing is maintained locally.

What needs improvement?

One of the features that is missing in Postman is reporting; it's very basic. If they could enhance it and provide a browser-based dashboard view, it would be beneficial.

Postman is limited to request and response kind of validation. If they can enhance it to have a database kind of validation like we have in ReadyAPI, it would be better. This feature would allow the response to be validated in the database as well.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Postman for more than three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is open-source and does the work required for day-to-day API testing activities. I would rate it ten out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Postman does not have database validation available, which affects its scalability. If this option were available, I would rate it ten out of ten. Currently, I would say it is around seven or eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

There is a lot of support available through forums and user groups, which has been sufficient for me. I hardly reach out to the vendor for support because the forums provide the required help.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

To start with, Postman is a good option, but ReadyAPI is a commercial tool with lots of built-in features. If cost isn't a concern, ReadyAPI is better, however, if it is, Postman is still a viable choice.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Postman is very simple. There is an option for both browser-based and desktop applications. The desktop application requires installation, which is straightforward, while the browser option is also available and easy to use.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Postman is open-source, so the cost is minimal compared to commercial platforms.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have a partnership with ReadyAPI but I am a Postman user.

What other advice do I have?

If you compare Postman and ReadyAPI, Postman is a very good starting option. However, ReadyAPI, being a commercial tool, offers additional features. If cost is not a concern, ReadyAPI is preferred.

Nonetheless, Postman offers ample features for API testing at no cost.

Overall, I would rate Postman as eight out of ten. I can recommend this solution to other users.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

A Backend Developers Essential API Tool

  • November 25, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Postman is a powerful tool that simplifies API development includinf testing making it the indispensable resourse for a Backend developer. It's quite easy to undersand which makes the set up and testing quite easy. It is easy for non developers to understand as well.
My favourite part is the feature-rich environment it provide, including automated testing, mock servers, and the ability to save API into different collections make it very organised. Also the collaboration part is nice as it allows all the team members to share API's and update seamlessly.
What do you dislike about the product?
While postman is highly functional, it has few drawbacks. The learning curve for advance features like scripting in pre request features, while useful seem little overpriced, especially for small teams or solo developers.
The lack of offline capabalities for certain features also feels limiting.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One of the primary problems it solves is building, testing, and documenting API's so that developers don't have to juggle between multiple tools for testing , debugging and collaboration.

Postman's user friendly inteface makes the api testing seemless. Its prebuilt requests and automated testing capabilities are very helpful for streamling the development workflows.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Postman makes api testing and debugging simple. It helps in quickly finding a resolving bugs withing the developing app.

What do you like best about the product?
Its support to Test Rest APIs is awesome, along with its OAuth2 testing support. It is a one-stop solution for the Backend Application testing with Collections support for the detailed Documentation.
What do you dislike about the product?
For Testing of Sockets of socket.io, they have not included it for full-fledged testing Support, So, there is a need for the Socket.io testing development. At the moment, only basic socket.io testing is included.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is benefitting the rapid API testing in real-time development of the Backend Application along with the collection support for Documenting the use cases, test cases of the API to the stake holders.
