Great low code rapid application development platform

  • September 25, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the ability to rapidly spin up new applications and products and deploy them to users to get immediate feedback.
What do you dislike about the product?
We are struggling to develop solutions that meet all of our needs out of the box. Extending the platform is sometimes necessary and unfortunately the resources we have are unable to do both.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are trying to get products and solutions to market faster without having to fully define each feature ahead of time. In doing so, we have found that deployments and management of the Build, Test, Deploy processes has been something that we no longer have to worry about
Recommendations to others considering the product:
When considering outsystems you need to evaluate the resources and talent, and their availability needed to use the products

Quick development and code standardization

  • September 25, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Outsystems improves deployment speed and standardizes code. This allows junior developers to produce.
What do you dislike about the product?
New product means new learning curve. I would like to see a code export feature as well. That would allow us to quickly develop solutions that we could host in house.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are allowing junior developers to produce solutions.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider business needs and pricing.

Powerful, Extensible, Extremely Fast!

  • September 25, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OutSystems has built a product that immediately garners disbelief. As a developer and architect I generally do not trust or use visual coding solutions. I feel that many of my clients quickly hit limitations when I choose to implement low code solutions. OutSystems is the exception. Over the course of a few years I have yet to hit any limitation and I have been able to deliver all of the requirements, both functional and non-functional, that my customers have given me.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only dislike I have is that OutSystems can be very confusing to use when you first get started. They have overcome this issue by providing many hours of constantly updated training sessions on their website. Their training team listens to feedback and provides new examples that are very easy to refer to throughout the course of a project.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dynamic UX requirements with "immediate" due dates. Many of my customers change their minds on the layout and theme of their UX multiple times throughout the course of a project. OutSystems gives me the flexibility to separate my front end and back end seamlessly so I can provide change controls that would normally be refused late in the development process.

OutSystems provide first class support along with excellent applications deployment. The apps that OutSystems can create are great for end users and line of business applications. Each step is driven by proven patterns and the success engineers are great for making sure you ship excellence.
What do you dislike about the product?
OutSystems web applications are HTML heavy and I wish that could be optimized a bit more.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fast deployments, fast application building and POCs. Agile all the way.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you know the solution you want to implement before investing in any one tool or toolset.

The PLATFORM to choose if you want Digital Innovation and Transformation done right

  • July 31, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Having managed, sponsored and promoted dozens of OutSystems projects across multiple industry sectors since 2005, what I like best in OutSystems:
• Build strong Web and Mobile POC, Prototypes and MVP in record time;
• Not only how fast we can build applications from the ground up but more important, how fast we can adapt applications to meet an increasingly dynamic and uncertain business environment;
• We benefit from the Rapid Application Development power of OutSystems while maintaining full flexibility to integrate with external systems and applications seamlessly and increment functionality through custom developed software components known as Extensions.
What do you dislike about the product?
From a business perspective, the price structure and licensing model should change less frequently, be more clear and more flexible to accommodate different adoption scenarios. Initial investment costs and lack of predictability regarding future cost of ownership, as applications evolve, are common objections to OutSystems platform adoption.
From a technical perspective, I know that, in bigger and more complex projects, technical teams may struggle with governance issues, code merging, release building and versioning, although we recognize that OutSystems has made important improvements in that area in recent versions of the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
From modernizing legacy systems to streamlining inefficient paper-based processes and engaging customers, suppliers and partners, we have solved a great variety of business problems and delivered real value to our customers, with great ROI in just a few months. Most of all, I have seen satisfied end users that breed and embrace applications built with OutSystems, which is ultimately our goal as information technology professionals.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
My first recommendation would be to try the platform. It is free, you have access to complete training materials and do not need any special guidance to build your first OutSystems application.
As a second recommendation and like many things in life, one size does not fit all. The approach you follow in the adoption of the platform will depend on the scenario at hand. Sometimes OutSystems will be great just for applications’ front-ends, leveraging the power of great user experience and anywhere, anytime access, connected to already existing solid backend systems. Other times OutSystems full stack applications may be the right path to follow to achieve modernization of legacy systems and leverage the full power of RAD. The decision of when and how to use the platform will dictate how much business value you can extract from its adoption.
As a last recommendation and as it usually happens with powerful tools like OutSystems, you can build great applications that bring high value to the business and that users love but you can also build sloppy, unmanageable and unusable applications that will be, sooner or later, thrown away. Good architecture decisions and sound governance are critical to maximize the benefits extracted from the OutSystems platform adoption, so be careful when choosing the project team.
