Lacework is a cyber security Swiss army knife

  • April 13, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Threat intelligence and machine learning have improved significantly in our environment over the past 2 years and now we only receive around 5 alerts a week from the IR side. False positives have dropped down as well from external network connection alerts, which have been vastly improved as well. The who, what, why, when dossiers are instrumental for a security analyst to quickly gauge what is happening in the environment. The compliance and alert rules are vast and provide much better detection capabilities than something like Guard Duty.
What do you dislike about the product?
The new UI in my opinion is a step back and I prefer a full-screen view of events instead of the left 1/4 of the screen real estate not being used. Compared to some competitors, Lacework is somewhat of a black box and lacks further visibility that other tools provide. The individual dossiers are very slow to load at times and do not provide any data at all in some cases. Detection is not real-time and instantaneous compared to other tools. We are still seeing 0byte network connections in dossiers which we have reported on for years and this has still not been fixed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Lacework has helped us clean up our container vulnerability remediation process. It makes it easy to know what our highest-risk containers that need to be remediated as soon as possible. It has also been instrumental in detecting reconnaissance and is a great high-level tool for viewing IOCs and IOAs. It is a critical part of our IR process and has really helped us solve the classic security issue of alert fatigue.

What do you like best about the product?
Lacework's categorization of alerts makes the platform easy to use and navigate. I like how we can see our total incoming data and behavior of entities to determine what action is needed to take.
What do you dislike about the product?
There aren't many negatives about using the Lacework platform for my role in the SOC. I think adding dashboard customization could be helpful however.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Lacework is allowing us to gain visibiliity into our cloud products and see how entities are interacting in our environment. It gives us an easy way to track our total environment variables and see what alerts we need to be focusing on.

Bolstering our small team with a whole new security function

  • April 03, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We're a small team - I wish I had a massive security team to help me sleep at night. Deploying Lacework has helped me sleep more comfortably knowing we've got tooling pouring over our platform looking for unusual errors.

It's helped a ton with keeping an eye on the platform, going a lot deeper than tools like Guarduty which I found suspiciously quiet sometimes. I particularly like the agent running on our platform keeping a proactive monitor on the actual Linux hosts and what they're up to as well.

It's also helped a ton with audit - we've spotted unusual behaviours or unexpected configuration and has helped us keep things tighter.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think sometimes the false positives can get a little irritating - we don't get many but sometimes we get a lot when we're making a lot of changes, or when connecting to known external sources for the first time.

I also think some of the UI could be improved a little - like on mobile it isn't great, and occasionally find myself tripping over trying to find the right bit. But I think in general the product is going in the right direction and I've enjoyed seeing the new features come out.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We wish we had a larger security team, and while we can do a lot to keep our platform secure, security will always be top of mind.

Lacework has helped us to get better visibility on what is actually happening in our platform and to alert us to unusual behaviours or actions proactively.

It hasn't "solved" security, but it's had a positive impact on the security posture of the platform as well as helping us to sleep easier at night.
