Rocket.Chat: Flexible, Self-Hosted Control That Powers Team Collaboration
What do you like best about the product?
What I like most about Rocket.Chat is how it gives full control over communication, especially with the option to self-host. It feels flexible and customizable compared to many other chat tools. Once set up , it works well for team collaboration without relying too much on third-party services.
What do you dislike about the product?
One thing I don't like about Rocket.Chat is that the setup and initial configuration can be a bit tricky, especially for new users. It also sometimes feels less polished compared to some mainstream chat apps. A few features could be more intuitive and easier to navigate.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rocket.Chat helps keep team communication organized in one place , without relying on multiple apps or external platforms. It's especially useful when you need more control over data and privacy. This makes collaboration smoother and gives a bit more confidence when handling internal discussions.
Intuitive, High-ROI Communication That Speeds Engineering Resolutions
What do you like best about the product?
It is very intuitive and has been the single best form of communication for our engineers, outside of face to face meetings. We have built a Confluence page to explain appropriate use, so that we don't end up with 'channel sprawl', where it becomes hard to find the best channel for quick comms. Complex technical problems can be discussed by a wide audience very quickly and it avoids the need for VC calls, which can take up a lot of time as the debate often broadens to encompass much wider topics. It really droves optimum performance and speed to resolution. It is well priced for an organisation of our size and the ROI has been evident for quite some time. We rarely have issues with the product and, when we do, the support quality and response times have been very good.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is little to dislike. A small challenge is the process by which users can clear open messages, it just seems to be a few too many steps each time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are an 80 person company servicing the needs of multiple customers. Most of our engineers are experienced problem solvers, but every now and then they come across a problem that needs deeper research. RocketChat makes them define their problem statement well, so that they can presen this to the community and get rapid suggestions to resolve issues. These conversations can then be edited and recorded in Confluence to provide a permanent record for future use
Security-Focused, But Setup and Cost Are Challenging
What do you like best about the product?
I appreciate Rocket.Chat's on-prem version because it solves security concerns for us. The security it offers is the main reason we chose it over other platforms. We handle very sensitive information, so it's crucial not to have employees sharing this information over online chat.
What do you dislike about the product?
Communication from Rocket.Chat to us is lacking. They suddenly increased their pricing tremendously, which is incredibly unfair. The initial setup was not easy at all; it was very hard and very expensive to set up. Since it's an on-premise solution, you have to set it up on the server in the office and configure all the permissions and parameters around it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rocket.Chat solves our security needs with its on-prem version, which allows us to prevent sensitive information from being shared over online chat.
Convenient Team Collaboration
What do you like best about the product?
I find Rocket.Chat very convenient and easy to use. It really helps us collaborate within the team and discuss our ideas. I also like that Rocket.Chat is open source software, allowing us to see what new features are coming up and recommend what features to include, which is really nice. Setting it up was very easy with no issues whatsoever.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's slightly lagging in between, which interrupts the flow of ideas.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rocket.Chat streamlines team communication and discussions, making collaboration easy and convenient.
Rocket.Chat: Flexible, Secure, and Built for Custom Workflows
What do you like best about the product?
What stands out most about Rocket.Chat is how much control and flexibility it gives teams compared to typical messaging tools. You’re not locked into a one-size-fits-all setup—you can self-host it, customize workflows, and integrate it with the systems you already use, which is especially valuable in environments that handle sensitive data.Another big plus is its focus on security and compliance. Features like end-to-end encryption and granular permissions make it a strong option for healthcare or support teams that need to be mindful of privacy standards while still collaborating efficiently.
It’s also very versatile in day-to-day use. You can manage internal chats, customer conversations, and even support tickets all in one place. That kind of consolidation reduces the need to jump between platforms, which can really streamline communication and improve response times.
Overall, it’s the combination of customization, security, and all-in-one functionality that makes it stand out.

What do you dislike about the product?
One drawback of Rocket.Chat is that the flexibility it offers can also make it more complex to set up and maintain—especially if you’re self-hosting. Teams without strong technical support may find the initial configuration and ongoing updates a bit demanding.
Another issue is that the user interface can feel less polished compared to more mainstream tools. Navigation isn’t always as intuitive, and some features take extra steps to access, which can slow down day-to-day workflows.
Performance can also be inconsistent at times, particularly with larger deployments or when there are many integrations running. Occasional lag or syncing delays can impact real-time communication.
Lastly, while it supports many integrations, setting them up isn’t always straightforward, and documentation can sometimes lack clarity. This can make it harder to fully leverage the platform without trial and error.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rocket.Chat mainly solves the problem of scattered communication and lack of control over data—and that has a real impact on day-to-day efficiency.
One big issue it addresses is having conversations spread across multiple platforms (calls, emails, texts, internal tools). By centralizing messaging, team discussions, and even customer interactions in one place, it reduces the time spent switching between systems and helps keep everything organized and searchable. For me, that means faster follow-ups, clearer documentation, and fewer missed details.
