The only BI platform you'll ever need

  • December 02, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I'm very happy with the new HTML5 capabilities, the increased performance, and the D3 integration. On top of that, there's a whole lot of improvements and innovations that make an already great tool even better.
What do you dislike about the product?
The gap in editing capabilities between dashboards (Visual Insight) and and documents (formerly known as dashboards) is smaller than in the past, but still somewhat bothersome.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Quick prototyping, agile approach, high re-usability.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
MicroStrategy is an incredibly robust platform. It has you covered up, beginning with a stellar semantic layer and security, taking you all the way to beautiful, meaningful, and actionable dashboards.

MicroStrategy Review

What do you like best about the product?
Incorporates the best of both worlds in Business Intelligence reporting; Easy to use, self-service analytics for business users, and Full-feature reporting solution for IT.
Stellar Sales and Product Support so far. Relatively new adopter.
What do you dislike about the product?
No major dislikes of the product to-date.
Only minor concern is that some the education courses could be more polished. But, the fact that they have a complete education curriculum and certification program is a plus.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Currently only in early stages of development and implementation.
However, we have been able to quickly replace some existing, problematic Excel reports, pivot tables, and graphs with solutions that work and provide an attractive presentation.
We are working on implementations of Advanced Insurance metrics dashboards, reports and graphs.

The way attributes and KPIs are linked is amazing.
The multiple options in the VLDB settings is awesome

A more robust way to move objects would be great.
A way where the objects will be collected automatically in a request.

More like in SAP systems

MicroStrategy is one of the best Enterprise wide BI tools out there. It is easy to configure and gives a wealth of options.

My Microstrategy Review

  • December 02, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Microstrategy synchronization between web and developer. single interface for end users to create their content and view it on the web directly. Microstrategy's distribution services is one among the best features. The rich looking dashboards that can be created using Microstrategy compared to other tools.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the basic type of filters (Drop down+search+checkbox) and few other combinations which are very much basic filtering types which should be available are missing. recent versions have lot of bugs, and Microstrategy asking customer to upgrade to next versions is not the solution, as the next versions have some other bugs which need to be addressed before releasing newer versions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Transaction services, Microstrategy office are helping one of the best features, though transaciton services needs some bug fixes in version 10
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Know your usage before choosing any tool.. each tool has its advantages and limitation. Comparing tools will not help.

Microstrategy User Review

  • December 02, 2016
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The MSTR schema provides a comprehensive OLAP layer that ensures that the data is accessed with highly optimized queries and with a pretty good performance. Also, the support for mobile transactions is a really useful feature.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the old dashboards and documents are not that good looking. Also Visual Insights still needs some polishing to compare to other self service BI tools like Tableau.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main business problem that we are solving is granting access to our stakeholders to their information, from a centralized location but using a federated model that allows them to use Visual Insights for Self Service BI with out the need to contact the BI staff for ad hoc reporting or for frequently asked business questions.
We create self service spaces that include only the information that they need and we empower them to create BI solutions by themselves.

Consider carefully

What do you like best about the product?
The Desktop application is now free.
Pricing model is clearer than earlier but..
What do you dislike about the product?
Documentation, inconsistencies, lack of details, and lack of solid examples. Poor if you compare to Teradata, Tableau and SAS.

Online Training options. Limited. I was at a user conference and they all recommended Youtube. A non
Microstrategy employee had made some videos. Very disappointing if you compare to Tableau. That includes transcripts of their material. SAS has just two (2) free online options but they are very good and fairly comprehensive.

Staff/ Resources: Cannot find any in the job market.

Tech Support: Disappointing, on par with Business Objects apparently. SAS were mostly good. Tableau looks alright thus far.

Software usability: users going very well with Tableau. Generally dislike Microstrategy, this is the non Desktop reporting version though.

Bugs /Shortcomings: I have a vendor consultant spending most of his time spent on making the software do what it is supposed to do/ investigating software issues/ workarounds. One year on Office add-in.. To be fair that does have environmental aspects but if they had some clearer documentation on ports used, protocols, etc that would have helped. .

Enterprise Manager: this is something that helps with reporting on usage. It has alot of prebuilt reports. But there are no clear definitions of the columns. There are also in some hardcoded URL links, with ASP references. We use Unix. Makes the prebuilt reporting useless. As was recommended by the vendor, best to make your own reports.

Consultant level of training/ knowledge: Upgrade from version 9 to 10. Quoted 1 month. Gave up after 3 months. Work done by vendor consultants. Do feel sorry for them but . .

Lack of security reporting, auditing capability. SAS has some options there that are ok.

Pricing model is clearer than earlier but making it hard to make it transparent on exact costings for items, based on varies levels of discounts.

Two types of releases, Platform and Foundation release. Foundation release is supported for just 6 months. . I hope that changes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Getting data out of a complex system to the users. Which they download from Microstrategy, into Tableau or Excel or a database.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The sales people will say it can do everything that Tableau can. Remain doubtful.

If looking for other Enterprise options, not sure about Tableau, but for a metadata/ data lineage/ Data Governance approach SAS is ok I found. Will need some skilled people with the initial setup though.
