simplicity excels

Unbelievable TCP/IP performance. Superior to any other systems. We're using with postgresql, nginx server serving millions of users every week. After switching from Red Hat Linux, we've seen significant increase in performance.

Amazing Jails

  • June 28, 2022
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Creating isolated secure virtual machines.
Network stack virtualization engine.
In the case of hacking a virtual system and bringing its functionality out of action, it will not affect other running virtual systems.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is not possible to use multiple IP addresses for one JAIL.
Lack of differentiation of system limits between the parent and guest systems.
Difficulties with using direct access to devices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The jail mechanism is used to build administered systems on dedicated servers, when the client is given access only to the jail, and the technical staff - to the master system.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Many system flaws can be fixed using third-party patches.
In modern FreeBSD, each virtual machine can be assigned multiple IP addresses.

FreeBSD jails are the original 'container'

  • November 07, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
FreeBSD jails pre-date containers like Docker by a long shot and as such, are far more straightforward. The thing I like about them is that they are so simple to set up and are easier to understand when compared to newer technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
What do you dislike about the product?
You will need to be very comfortable with a terminal; there is no GUI interface here like you can get for Docker on Windows. If you are comfortable with the terminal, you will easily be able to use jails - if you are not, then I would suggest trying something else. The thing that tech like Docker do well is defining your software's dependencies and letting the container deal with it for you. This is something jails will not do for you.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using jails allows for true isolation of processes on a machine. This is particularly helpful when you have software components that allow the uploading of content and resources that could potentially harm the OS / Machine. We used it for this purpose as the isolation makes this much more secure.

Fantastic FreeBSD AMIs

Thank you for these AMIs, really useful and work beautifully. As my favourite OS, and the workhorse of the Internet, it's great to have these updated regularly.

Simplicity and Stability

FreeBSD is well known for stability and comes with a small footprint. I have been trying many different OS for over 30 years and this is one of the best there is.

This tipped me over to use AWS. Dont care too much about Linux (ok i guess) but this is purely brute force.

Thank you very much for the FreeBSD AMI series!

Though I might be an old dog, I like FreeBSD more than other OSes much for its simplicity and integrity, and from this reason I cannot imagine run nodes without FreeBSD.
And I really appreciate a series of AMIs of FreeBSD, that enable me to use in the AWS.
In addition, this AMI do the freebsd-update in the first boot sequence so that the EC2 entity boot up with the most current (in RELEASE) version. So great.
Also necessary kernel module and ports are loaded by default. Great!
I just do the configuration for my purpose!

ps. I saw your message on ML ;-)

Thank you very much again!

Best Regards,

Stable, performant, good documentation

Go-to operating system when looking for performance on low resources. Which also translates to lower cost, especially when it comes to the cloud.

They need to put a openBSD AMI on aws. However, the web interface instructions to connect are wrong. To connect to an instance use this command ssh -i ec2-user@.
