Streamlined Asset Management for Visual Content Teams

  • May 19, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Canto offers a clean, intuitive interface that makes organizing and retrieving digital assets incredibly efficient. Its smart album and tagging system allow for consistent metadata use across teams, and the search functionality is powerful—especially when combined with custom filters and keyword tagging. The ability to create portals and share branded collections with external clients or stakeholders is also a huge asset, making Canto a versatile tool not just for internal organization but for client-facing work as well. Version control and usage tracking help maintain integrity across projects, which is crucial for a design-focused studio like ours.
What do you dislike about the product?
While Canto’s core features are strong, there are occasional limitations around batch metadata editing and bulk tagging—especially when assets span multiple albums. Customizing the user interface beyond basic branding options can also be restrictive. Additionally, the reporting features could be more robust; it would be helpful to have better analytics on asset usage and user engagement to inform content strategy. Lastly, syncing with other platforms (like ClickUp, HubSpot or Google Drive) is functional but not always seamless, requiring manual oversight or third-party integrations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Canto as our primary digital asset management system to organize, archive, and retrieve thousands of scientific illustrations, animations, and visual design files. It serves as a centralized hub for our creative team, clients, and collaborators. We rely heavily on Canto to tag and categorize assets by scientific theme (e.g., cell type, molecular pathway, disease area), maintain version control across projects, and create shareable portals for client review and asset delivery.

Canto is solving several key challenges for us:

Scattered assets: Before Canto, our assets were siloed across multiple platforms. Now everything is centralized, searchable, and backed by a consistent metadata structure.

Version control confusion: Canto’s upload and replacement features help us keep the latest versions accessible while preserving past iterations.

Client delivery inefficiencies: With branded portals, we can now securely share collections with clients, allowing them to view, comment on, and download assets easily—no more long email threads or clunky file transfers.

Internal workflow clarity: The system helps us track usage rights, assign labels based on scientific themes, and guide team members through a structured tagging taxonomy.

Overall, Canto saves us hours of time, ensures consistency across client work, and provides peace of mind knowing our visual assets are well-organized and accessible.

What do you like best about the product?
Canto has been an essential part of our photo archive workflow for over 25 years, helping us manage our historic collection with ease. It saves us time, keeps things running smoothly, and ensures our visuals stay consistent across the board.

Setting up online portals and upload links for special projects was fast and easy. The move to their cloud platform was seamless, and the training was clear and straightforward—making the transition a breeze.

Now that we’re on the cloud, our team can access and collaborate from anywhere, which makes producing a high-quality newspaper every day even more efficient.
What do you dislike about the product?
More user role levels in the access structure
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Canto as the central hub for managing our extensive photo archive, which spans over a century of Hawaii’s history. It helps our editorial team quickly find, organize, and use images for daily publication. From preserving historic visuals to supporting real-time content creation, Canto plays a vital role in keeping our newsroom efficient and visually consistent.

Wonderfully Robust and Customizable

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Canto is a wonderfully robust digital asset management platform. I like that we can customize our style guides, asset structure, sharing capabilities, tracking capabilities, and so much more. The ability to search for items with keywords or by what's in the photo is amazing. I highly recommend Canto for those with many digital assets.
What do you dislike about the product?
The setup can be overwhelming, thankfully there are a lot of training resources and onboarding help.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We get many requests for our logo and branding guide, we have the ability to share our style guide with whoever may need it very easily. They can grab the assets they need without a lot of back and forth. We can also host all of our digital collateral in an organized way.

Cool AI Feature Within Canto

What do you like best about the product?
I think Canto's metadata management is strong. We can tag files with keywords, use AI-driven image recognition, and create custom fields, making it easy to quickly find exactly what we need.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think the price is on the higher side.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Canto makes it simple to create branded portals for external users (like media, partners, or clients). Sharing is secure and trackable, and we can control permissions precisely.

Most Scalable DAM I've Experienced

  • May 15, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The customization to support many different brands. I was pitched by many DAMs that wouldn't allow me to make different portals with different branding... claiming those would additional 'DAMs'. Not with Canto. I can make a portal to support as many brands as I want without having add-ons!

It's super easy to share files across different platforms, and their resizing/cropping/compression functions are super helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
Their latest "AI Search" functionality is lackluster. It doesn't feel like the big upgrade, as I expecting the ability to search by meta data AND asset content. However, I'll run a search for a product from a specific brand (which is identified via a custom field), and still get assets from other brands. This is something I expect to improve, but not impressed with it's current state.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allowing me to manage version control easily. It's helpful to have a north star asset with a URL that lives in different places-- website, emails, customer portals. Being able to update it in one place and impact across the board is a huge time saver!

First Year with Canto

  • May 15, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of searchability has been a game changer when it comes to finding content. We are easily able to look through tagged content, and the smart tagging has helped us as well.

The increased organization has been a huge help for our team as well, as we're using the platform daily. This has saved a lot of time spent in the platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are a number of times that imported photos don't keep the "approved" status and will change back to "pending." This makes it frustrating when sending links to clients that do not have approval to see pending photos & our team has to spend more time going back through and doing the work again.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Organization and searchability
